Stevens-Johnson syndrome: case reportA 53-year-old man with epilepsy, whose seizures were
inadequately controlled on valproic acid, started receivingoxcarbazepine [dosage not stated] on 9 July 2007. On20 July, he developed a sore throat, injected eyes and liperosions; high fever and erythematous skin rashesappeared the following day. On presentation, widespread,confluent erythematous macules and papules, andnumerous flat atypical targetoid lesions were evident on hisface, neck, trunk and proximal upper extremities. Otherfindings included diffuse oral erosions and bilateralconjunctivitis. Stevens-Johnson syndrome was diagnosed.An oxcarbazepine-induced reaction was suspected, andgenotyping then revealed the presence of the HLA-B*1502allele.
