During National Hispanic Inheritance Month, many contributions from the Hispano American to the United States will be recognized.

Greetings my friends of La Voz. In October, we celebrate Columbus Day, (Dia de la Raza in Spanish, raza means “race”). When we think of the word ‘race’ many people might think of several races that exist around the world. I can only think of one, the human race. I remember when I !rst came to work for a !nancial institution here in Sioux Falls, I was asked to part of a Council meant to help senior management educate their employees about diversity. Like we

say in my country, “I got spooked”.Born in Puerto Rico, where in our blood run Taina roots, who are native Indians to Puerto Rico, as well as Spanish, African, French and American roots; where we all grow up playing, studying, sharing together, I thought it was incredible that a council was needed to help educate the employees of a corporation on how we all are equal. To have to teach people to accept one another because he or she wasn’t or looked like them. I did not grow up seeing my dear school friend (may he rest in peace) Rolando Vendrel as di"erent, or feeling that I was better than him only because his skin was a di"erent shade than mine. We, in Puerto Rico, don’t look at a person in front of us by their color, we see them as human beings. Maybe if we looked at life this way, many problems in our society would not exist, and the quality of life might be better. Happy Columbus Day (Dia de la Raza). May God Bless you!

!"#$%&'()*+,-./+")*&'+#.0&)1$/#2)!e month of September 1968, the United States Con-gress authorizes the President Lyndon B. Johnson to pro-claim National Week of Hispanic Heritage. Later in the year 1988, the celebration was extended to a month, from September 15 to October 15. Now America celebrates the culture and traditions of the residents in this country with roots in Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of Central and South America and the Carib-bean. !e reason why we chose the September 15 date to start this celebration was that this day is the anniversary of independence of "ve Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on 16 and 18 Septem-ber respectively.

During this month various public, private, community organizations and celebrate in di#erent ways, the cultural contribution, cuisine, music and customs of Latinos liv-ing in the United States. !e con-tribution of Latinos in this coun-try is a great feeling that we are extremely proud. So this month, felt that we are part of the United States, but our roots are and will always present inside of us.

!"#$%#&$'(#)*+,-.!is month I had the honor of interviewing an individual who impressed me a great deal. She is Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelo-si –Dem. party-, ex-Speaker of the House in Washington, DC. Alexandra is the Director of award winning documentary for HBO “Citi-zen USA, A 50 States Road Trip”. I was able to talk with Alexandra here in Sioux Falls, at the Washington Pavilion during the premiere of the documentary. I was impressed to learn that out of over 250 people to come to the pre-miere, about 99 % were Anglos, as I believe I could only count some 6 Latinos.

!e documentary is about the new Americans, Alexandra assisted to naturalization oath cer-emonies across the 50 States and interviewed some of the participants a"er being sworn as American citizens. She would ask them how important it was to them to become citizens. Individuals from Russia, Portugal, Mexico, Cuba, Bosnia, India, Iraq, would talk about how important it is to them to be citizens of the United States. !e explained how Ameri-can citizens consider many things of daily life as something you ‘must’ have. Examples of such things are education, being able to open the water faucet and have water running out from it, that we can choose our car, its color and style, the kind of food we eat, calling 911 and have someone come and rescue or assist

us, women’s rights. !ings like these aren’t necessary so in their native countries, some need to walk miles to get water and bring it back in containers, or a"er saving for the car of their dreams, they needed to settle for the one the government would give them, even if the only available color was yellow and you didn’t like yellow.

!ey were asked if, a"er having gone through the complete immigration process to become American citizens, they would go through it again and all of them responded that they would; that even a"er all the setbacks, sac-ri#ces, problems, they would go through it again because all of that did not compare in the least to what they lived like in their na-tive countries. !at they were proud of their cultures, but they knew how important it is to learn to speak the English language and to write it and become part of this culture and their communities. !e joy that their faces showed was something that #lled all of the people watching the documentary.

I was impressed by a comment from one of the premiere-goers and it is something I al-ways mention when I’m invited to speak at an event, that here in the United States we are immigrants, or children of immigrants in one way or another and that this is what makes us a powerful and prosperous nation.

If I notify my bank that I can-not make my mortgage pay-ments, will they immediately start the foreclosure process? !is is not true. It is advis-able to not to wait too long before calling your loan of-"cer and explaining to them what is happening. By doing this, the loan o#cer can help you make a payment plan. If you let too much time to go by, your banker won’t be able to help you.

Can I lose my house if I do not pay my mortgage? !is is not true. !e process only starts if you are 90 days behind on your mortgage payments. Talk to your loan o#cer, ex-plain your situation, and see what type of payment plan or mortgage modi"cation can be done can be arranged for you. !e bank wants you to keep your house

I am not going to make my mortgage payments to make my bank pay attention. Don’t even think about it, that is not an appropriate solution. You should call your bank and ex-plain the situation. As of to-day, banks have had to take possession of over 2 million houses, because their own-ers could not make payments. !e banks have their hands full as it is, and that is not the

way to let them know that you are in trouble. My mortgage modi"cation loan was declined, so why ask for help again? Don’t give up! Maybe you did not qualify at the time. Perhaps you forgot to provide important infor-mation. Furthermore, there might be a new federal regu-lation that has come out that could help you.

I lost my job. Will I immedi-ately lose my house? If you lost your job, call your bank immediately, and explain your situation. Perhaps they can modify the payments. Take action and get organized. Call your creditors, such as credit cards companies and vehicle loan providers. Explain your situation; some of these com-panies include an insurance policy in their mortgage hav-ing to do with job loss. !is insurance helps pay your mortgage while you seek em-ployment. Maybe the bank of-fered it to you when you got your mortgage, and perhaps you don’t remember.

!ese are some tips that I can o$er, and there are more! !e most important thing is to communicate with your bank-ing institution at all times, to see how you can save your house.

Domestic violence is a “pattern of coercive and assaultive behaviors that include physical, sexual, ver-bal, and psychological attacks and economic coercion that adults or adolescents use against their inti-mate partner.”

Domestic violence is not typically a singular event and is not limited to only physical ag-gression. Rather, it is the perva-sive and methodical use of threats, intimidation, manipulation, and physical violence by someone who seeks power and control over their intimate partner. Abusers use a speci!c tactic or a combination of tactics to instill fear in and domi-nance over their partners.

"e strategies used by abusers are intended to establish a pattern of desired behaviors from their victims. Certain behaviors o#en are cited by the perpetrator as the reason or cause of the abu-sive behavior, therefore, abusive verbal and physical actions are o#en intended to alter or control that behavior.

If you are someone, or know of someone who may be in a relationship that includes domes-tic violence, please don’t wait. Seek help by contacting "e Compass Center in Sioux Falls by calling 339-0116 or visit the website for more information at www.thecom-passcenter.org.

A few days ago, I was talking with a good friend about the changes that have been happening in the di!erent cultures as times goes by, and even though it was hard to accept, the topic “Americanization” appeared in the conversation.

It’s evident that North American traditions have been introduced in our culture, for example, in the way to celebrate some of the traditional parties, the way to eat and even changing our vocabulary. "is fact scares us, as though it was a personal attack against our culture, but maybe we’re jumping to conclusions or even being ignorant, like for example with Halloween.

We blame America for bringing us a di!erent way to celebrate “Halloween” with the majority not know-ing that Halloween is a European tradition, passed to North America from Ireland.

Furthermore, what scares us the most is not using words like “Spoiler” or “cool” or expressions like “LOL” in our language. No, what scares us the most is that we’re turning our Spanish vocabulary into an “Ameri-can slang” without realizing it. At the same time, we’re afraid of seeing our typical food changed into “fast food”, thinking that our traditions could be buried be-cause of American culture. It makes us resist it in one-way or another.

In spite of everything, cultural diversity is essential to survival and human evolution. If a language stands the passage of time, it’s because it has been passed from generation to generation, through culture and tradi-tion. If we resist this, we’ll be going back to the old times, and no one has ever said that adopting new ways means that you have to forget the old ones.

Zumba is a dance that combines !tness with Latin rhythms and that helps you burn calories while having fun. It is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, but for Dawn Szymik, a Zumba instructor from Sioux Falls, this dance has a deeper connotation.

ZUMBA is popular because it is fun. We incorporate fun move-ments and exciting music that just gets you shaking! We take the !t-ness feel right out of it and make it party. "at is why it is so success-ful around the world!

How did it change your life?

I used to be obece and I also was in a car accident a few years ago, and ZUMBA has changed my life because it has given me health and happiness again.

What are the bene"ts of ZUMBA?

"e bene!ts are innumerable. I have students who lose weight very quickly. I have others who use it to stay healthy mentally, you’re burning calories, you are having fun, you’re losing weight, toning your body... all at the same time! In one hour you can burn between 500-1000 calories.
