Reactions 459 - 10 Jul 1993 ★ S Temazepam First report of pulmonary embolism after IV injection: case report A 31-year-old woman, who was a drug abuser, experienced a pulmonary embolism after injecting herself intravenously into her right groin with a few tablets of temazepam 10mg dissolved in water. The patient presented with pain in her right leg and was discharged after receiving paracetamol (acetaminophen). She died 38 hours later. At autopsy, small pulmonary vessels were found to contain basophilic fibrillary foreign material. Serum samples showed no evidence of drug overdose, and her death was attributed to pulmonary microembolisation of material injected intravenously. Author comment: ‘The present case appears to be the first recorded death associated with intravenous temazepam injection, and the pulmonary microemboli have not to our knowledge been described.’ Vella EJ, et al.
