Reactions 1096 - 8 Apr 2006 Carbamazepine Lupus erythematosus: case report A 35-year-old man, who had received carbamazepine [dosage not stated] for 20 years for epilepsy, complained of chest pain, dyspnoea and reduced physical activity for 3 months [duration of treatment before reaction onset not clearly stated]. After he was subsequently diagnosed with a large pericardial effusion and had undergone pericardiocentesis (1200mL), viral perimyocarditis was suspected. He received anti-inflammatory treatment and his symptoms initially resolved. After 4 weeks, his pericardial effusion recurred and livedo reticularis was evident. Serological examination showed antinuclear antibodies and antibodies against histones. He was diagnosed with carbamazepine-induced lupus erythematosus. After carbamazepine discontinuation and immunosuppressive therapy initiation, he recovered completely. Wittchen F, et al.
