All of the women received cyclophosphamide and fluorouracil along with 1 or more of the following drugs: methotrexate, doxorubicin, cisplatin, vincristine, dexamethasone and prednisone (Duration of antineoplastic therapy not documented). Stiffness was usually most noticeable after periods of inactivity and there was mild periarticular swelling in some cases. Bone and joint scans and serological tests for autoimmune markers were unremarkable Anti-inflammatories were administered but were ineffective. Symptoms resolved over 6-12 months without additional treatment in most cases, although 1 patient experienced a rapid, complete resolution of symptoms after receiving prednisone 7.5 mg/day. Author comment: These cases appear to describe a relatively similar, but previously unreported, clinical syndrome of arthralgias and myalgias. Symptoms developed within a few months of completing several months of cyclophosphamide/ fluorouracil-containing combination therapy and usually resolved spontaneously Loprinzi CL, et al.
