Reactions 1342 - 12 Mar 2011 S Antineoplastics Cytomegalovirus retinitis: case report A 50-year-old man experienced vision changes during cycle 4a of chemotherapy with rituximab plus hyperfractionated cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin and dexamethasone [R-hyperCVAD; route, dosage and time to reaction onset not stated] for T-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia. He was also receiving ciprofloxacin, fluconazole and aciclovir. As cytarabine toxicity was thought to be a possible cause, dexamethasone eye drops were administered, with no improvement in his vision. The visual changes worsened with blurring and black spots in the visual field. Areas of necrotising retinitis and intraretinal haemorrhages were revealed in both eyes on ophthalmologic examination. Cytomegalovirus retinitis was diagnosed. He received valganciclovir and in a few weeks the retinitis resolved and the visual symptoms improved. Libby E, et al.
