Change is definitely not a bad thing after

all. Ba rac k Oba ma , the ne w US Presiden t-

elect, got his throne by harping on that

    ideology, beating political heavyweight

Hillary Clinton and rival John McCain, with

the latters loss being blamed on several

key blunders, the most significant being his

inability to shake off his association with

    George Bush. Obama promised, among

others, to c ha nge how the US views its

foreign policies, and to revamp the

countrys existing tax structures to create a

be tte r living environme nt fo r all its residen ts.

Although not on the same scale as what

Obama promised, I would also like to

anno unce som e c hang es to the SMG

newsletter. First off, with so much editorial

content bursting to be included into each

issue of the newsletter, I have decided to

convert the issue from just a two-page e-

    newsletter into a full-fledge online

magazine, and promise to include more

editorial content, pictures, interviews all in a

new, fresh and upda ted layout.

As this is a complete revamp, I implore you

read ers to be me rciful in you r critic isms,

and be patient while my team and I fine-

tune every aspect of the magazine over

the coming months. At the same time, I

would also like to invite all the budding

writers and photographers out there to

send me your articles/ photo s. As I have

mentioned before, change is definitely not

a bad thing, but in order to change to

hap pe n, I need all of your supp ort.

    President'sAddress

    Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi

    Wabarakatu

First and foremost let me wish all

Singa po reans in the United Arab

    Emirates (UAE) a Happy and

    Prosperous New Year.

This writte n m essage is the first tha t I

am writing as President of the

Singa po re Muslim Group (SMG) and it

gives me a window to conveyfeedbacks that I received from fellow

Singaporeans living in the UAE and in

    particular our Consul General of

    Singapore His Excellency Mr Dileep

Nair on the ac tivities of SMG.

It is with grea t regret tha t I wa s unab le

to be with you during the Malam

Mesra Aidil Fitri 08 due to prior family

c omm itment in Singap ore and I am

glad that the event was a success

and met its objectives. A post mortem

    review reveals that majority enjoyed

the event, food was good but the

    entertainment needs a more

    innovative programme and the

    committee has been encouraged to

organise such similar events in the

future where not only will this be a

ga thering of Singap oreans and other

nationalities but also a showcase of

    the Malay/Muslim culture in their

c eleb ration of Hari Raya (Eid Fitri) in a

    foreign land.

I met a Singap orean w ho b rought his

    European colleague to the function

and he was impressed to see the

    warm and close relationship the

Singap oreans here have in Dubai.

This is one o f the ob jec tives of SMG to

foster unity am ong st the Singap orean

Muslims in the UAE and, being united

we can better integrate with otherSinga po reans and na tiona lities.

This brings me b ac k to the Yea r 2005

whe re a group o f Singap oreans met

to initiate SMG initiatives and a ge t

    together function was organised at

    Ahmad Fuads house. Many who

attended were surprised to see so

ma ny Singa po rean Muslims in the UAE

and instantly made new friends and

thus felt a sense of relief.

    For example, there were two

Singap orean fa milies who have be en

staying in Al Ain for two years and

living not too far apart from each

othe r and neither know s the e xistenc e

of each other until they met at the

function. There ha s be en numerous

suc h cases and the e xistence o f SMG

    filled the vacuum of these

Singap orean fam ilies and to some

    extent changed their life and

pe rspe ctive o f living in Duba i.

Recently I had the pleasure of callingon Mr Dileep Nair, Consul General of

Singa po re with a courtesy visit in my

c ap ac ity as the Presiden t of SMG. Mr

Nair being himself gave a warm

reception and we had over an hour

of mutual and frank discussion on

va rious issue s inc lud ing SMG . It is the

aspiration of the Consul General, for

    SMG t o b e a n inclusive g roup,

    networking and interacting with the

othe r Singap orean g roups and

    communities.

Initially SMG w as ge ared to wa rds the

Ma lay/ Muslims Singa porea n tocreate a cohesive environment for

their soc ial integ ration and afte r three

    (3) yea rs of e xistence, SMG has

    matured and received support within

its own community and thus path the

way to spread its net wider to be an

    inclusive group, roping other

Singa po reans and nat iona lities in its

    activities.

This is evident in the Novemb er &

Dec em ber 2008 ac tivities whe re SMG

participated in the sponsoring of the

Fam ily Bow ling Day, Asea n Soc cer

Invita tion a nd Singa pore Fam ily Fun

Day with go od supp ort from SMG

me mb ers. Thus soc ially inte rac ting

with the othe r Singap orean

c om mun ities in the UAE.

The SMG Co mm ittee is tha nkful to the

Co nsul General of Singa pore fo r his

    wisdom, understanding and advise to

SMG a nd his enc ourag em ent andsupport for the social integration of

    Singaporeans in the UAE.

Glam orous, stylish and eve ntful. These are just som e o f the adjec tives tha t

can be used to describe this years Eid Fitri gathering. Held at the glitzy

Shang ri-La Hotel, the event wa s atte nde d by more t han 200 guests, all

dressed up to nines in traditional Malay costumes, and all determined to

have a good time. And the organisers did not disappoint. Apart from the

huge buffet spread serving authentic local Malay dishes and desserts,

gue sts we re also e ntertained by p op ular Singap ore c ome dian Suhaimi

Yusof, flown in exclusively just for the night. His humour, wit and act was

received warmly by the audience, who definitely went home with a smile

plastered to their face s, and mem ories that w ill last a lifetime.

While maybe half of Dubai was just about to wake up from their slumber

on a lazy Friday m orning, ab out 100 or so Singa porea ns, with the ir fam ily in

tow, braced the morning sunshine and made their way to Al Quoz, all

read y to show their bow ling prowe ss at the inaug ural Singap ore Fam ily

Bowling Day. While some came equipped with bowling gears and

customised balls, determined to clinch the prizes at stake, others were just

there to soak in the c arnival-like a tmo sphe re and spe nd t he m orning in the

excellent com pa ny of other Singap oreans. With the eve nt end ing at a

high, plans are already underway for a second instalment early next year.

    Keep a lookout for it!
