1O. LASSAULT
Reconstruction and interpretation of the rules of
Canne Royale from Hum 1862
By Jean Trembloy.-2007
Ce art est vraiment un jeu
This fine art is really a game, so subjected to rules.
The attacks are made following certain principals. (Hum 1862 Brussels)
This means you can only start to play when all basic movements are known.
These are the different combat guards, the different attacks and defences, the different
movements like the volte.
Therefore the eight lessons as described by Hum.
LASSAULT: Real combat between two adversaries.
The rules of the game.
1. The gear.
- A canne royale = 1 meter.
- A fencing-mask.
- A glove.
When used other protection both contestants have to wear the same
protection.
2. The field.
- An open space or room.
- The extension of the game is limited to the provided space or room.
- When there are spectators present, keep your distance.
- The direction is dictated by using the compass-card: O-W and N-Z or the
Sides of the room: 4=forwards and at the same time starting direction.
(See diagram).1=right, 2=backwards, 3= Left, 4=forwards and at the same
time ending direction. (See diagram).
3. Taking on the position. Starting and ending. = Tirer le mur
-Take your position forms the right angle (fig 1)-Salute the audience. (Salut simple)
-Salute the opponent (salut de couronnement)
-Put on your fencing-mask.
-Take the position (fig 2 or 3) while exercising use students guard (fig 2)
while your in competition use teachers guard (fig 3)
- The end of the match is closed in reversed order.
4. Courtesy.
- The eldest player starts the attack.
- If thecanne royale should fall it is the duty of the adversary to pick it up and
give it back with respect.- Dont pretend not being hit.
- Dont pretend you hit the other player.
- Always stay friendly also towards the public.

5. Style.
-The game is played with thecanne royale in one hand.
- The secret of the art lies in the holding of thecanne royale, (the rope is held
around the hand, holding the hand against thecanne royale)
Thecanne royale is held gently in the hand between thumb and index
finger, which makes a quick action possible.
- Attack with no interruption; dont show a lack of action.
- Dont retreat for the blows; catch them in parade en attack straight away.riposte. Dont wait for your opponent to prepare his attack, because then
you are already to late.
- Keep on moving, but beware to much action is harmful, better is to play
with moderation, judgement and steadfastness.
6. Goal.
- Catch with your weapon or avoid the blows of the opponent.
- - Give the opponent as much blows as possible.
7. Hitting.
- All the blows that are a strike home are good La Botte
- The stroke in the chest with the point of thecanne royale is forbidden
Coup darret
- When theres no protection the coup des parties is also forbidden.
- The stroke with the backside of thecanne royale coup de bout is
indicated to use frequently when your opponent is close to you, this
increases the action, and is not dangerous when your wearing a helmet.
When the opponent is hit go back in combat guard position fig. 2 and wait
until your opponent does the same. Then start over again.
8. Match.
- A point is scored with a successful blowBotte that hits the opponent.
All places on the body are authorized to hit.
The match is ended when a player has been hit three times by the other
Player. The end is sealed with La Belle.
- You can play as many games as agreed.
When obeying these rules, there is no need for a referee. The judgment lies in thecourtesy.
