Hyponatraemia in elderly patients: 2 case reportsTwo women aged 71 and 91 years, respectively,
developed hyponatraemia while receiving carbamazepineand indapamide, and escitalopram [dosages, routes andtherapeutic indications not stated].
Hyponatraemia was detected in the older womanfollowing admission to the emergency department for legpain. On starting treatment with escitalopram 1 monthearlier, her serum sodium level was 139 mmol/L; onpresentation her sodium level had fallen to 124 mmol/L.Escitalopram was suspected and discontinued, and she wasmanaged with fluid restriction and sodium replacement[outcome not stated].
The second woman experienced mental deteriorationwhile receiving carbamazepine and indapamide [time toreaction onset not stated]. Testing revealed severehyponatraemia (serum sodium 114 mmol/L). Hersymptoms resolved after both drugs were discontinued.
