Hyponatraemia was detected in the older woman following admission to the emergency department for leg pain. On starting treatment with escitalopram 1 month earlier, her serum sodium level was 139 mmol/L; on presentation her sodium level had fallen to 124 mmol/L. Escitalopram was suspected and discontinued, and she was managed with fluid restriction and sodium replacement [outcome not stated]. The second woman experienced mental deterioration while receiving carbamazepine and indapamide [time to reaction onset not stated]. Testing revealed severe hyponatraemia (serum sodium 114 mmol/L). Her symptoms resolved after both drugs were discontinued. See also this issue p4; 803052725 Therapeutic Goods Administration.
