Reactions 530 - 3 Dec 1994 S Carbamazepine Stevens Johnson syndrome: case report A 43-year-old woman developed Stevens Johnson syndrome 2 weeks after she started treatment with carbamazepine 100mg bid for severe neuralgia. The woman was admitted with fever and progressive generalised erythematous macular and bullous skin lesions. The rash had first appeared on her extremities but then spread to her trunk, neck, face, palms, oral mucosa and conjunctiva. Corneal erosion was evident in her right eye and she had haemorrhagic crusting in her nasal cavity. The patient was given IV fluids and high-dose corticosteroids. She was discharged 2 weeks later, and, at 6 months’ follow-up, remained asymptomatic. Author comment: Although relatively few reports of carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been published, patients should be warned to report any skin rash. Hur T, et al.
