Reactions 385 - 25 Jan 1992 Carbamazepine Encephalopathy: case report Confusion of 4 days’ duration led to the admission of a 63-year-old woman who had received carbamazepine and phenytoin for 4 years to control epilepsy. Asterixis, ECG abnormalities and hyperammonaemia were also observed, and encephalopathy was diagnosed. Carbamazepine-induced encephalopathy was suspected when the patient failed to respond to appropriate therapy. Carbamazepine withdrawal was followed by significant patient improvement. The patient was discharged receiving phenytoin alone Donnet A, et al. Carbamazepine-induced toxic encephalopathy.
