The authors cited 441 prospective reports of in utero exposure to alprazolam or triazolam. In cases where the outcome of pregnancy is known there were 16 reports of spontaneous abortion with no congenital anomaly detected, 2 stillbirths and 1 death at day 1. More than half the cases had a normal pregnancy outcome. There were single reports of pyloric stenosis. moderate tongue-tie, umbilical hernia and ankle inversion and clubfoot. Two reports of benzodiazepine withdrawal in infants have been reported and there have been retrospective reports of Down's syndrome (n = 1) cat's eye and Pierre Robin syndrome (1) following alprazolam ingestion and multiple congenital anomalies after triazolam exposure (1) during the first trimester. Benzodiazepines Embryofetopathy: follow-up comment

Neonatal dysmorphism following maternal use of benzodiazepines during pregnancy [Reactions 160: 7, 24 Jan 1987). was suggested to have been reported at an elevated rate of incidence, because not all patients had blood tested for benzodiazepines. In addition, the incidence 01 polydrug abuse was not evaluated and some abnormalities may have resulted from viral infection associated with IV drug abuse.

The authors cited 441 prospective reports of in utero exposure to alprazolam or triazolam. More than half the cases had a normal pregnancy outcome. There were single reports of pyloric stenosis. moderate tongue-tie, umbilical hernia and ankle inversion and clubfoot.

Two reports of benzodiazepine withdrawal in infants have been reported and there have been retrospective reports of Down's syndrome (n = 1) cat's eye and Pierre Robin syndrome (1) following alprazolam ingestion and multiple congenital anomalies after triazolam exposure (1) during the first trimester .

Benzodiazepines are assumed to increase '," the risk of congenital abnormalities and therapy or abuse may produce drug withdrawal symptoms during the postnatal period',
