At dinner, the man ingested approximately 70 tablets of oxcarbazepine 600mg and an undefined number of benazepril/hydrochlorothiazide 10mg/12.5mg tablets with some glasses of wine and, 4 hours later, he was brought to the emergency room. He was confused. He had a BP of 150/90mm Hg and an HR of 60 beats/min. Activated charcoal and a saline laxative were administered. Laboratory investigations showed mild hypokalaemia and a blood alcohol concentration of 200 mg/dL. The man was hospitalised. He gradually became unconscious (Glasgow Coma Scale score of 7); he was intubated and transferred to the ICU. Approximately 6 hours after ingestion of the overdose, his serum concentrations of oxcarbazepine and monohydroxycarbazepine were 12.45 and 65.45 µg/mL, respectively. He underwent 4 hours of haemodialysis, 3 hours following which, he had completely recovered and was discharged from the ICU. Furlanut M, et al.
