Sinus thrombosis, osteopenia aggravation andliver toxicity in a child: case report
A 10-year-old boy developed sinus thrombosis, aggravation of osteopenia and liver toxicity while receivingantineoplastics.
The boy, who had a history of cystic fibrosis (CF) withintermittent Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections andosteopenia, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblasticleukaemia (ALL). He received chemotherapy according tothe ALL-BFM 2000 protocol (amendment 2006-07-01), thatincluded prednisone, asparaginase and dexamethasone10 mg/m2/day [dosage information incomplete; routes notstated]. During therapy, he developed cerebral venousthrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus afteradministration of asparaginase. He also developedaggravated osteopenia with severe back pain, with livertoxicity occurring during protocol II/1 of chemotherapy[specific drugs and duration of treatment to reaction onsetsnot stated].
The boy’s aggravated osteopenia resulted in therequirement for a wheelchair, as well as administration ofmorphine, calcium and bisphosphonates. After the onset ofliver toxicity, chemotherapy was withheld. [Patientoutcome not stated].
