Reactions 1411 - 21 Jul 2012 S Antineoplastics Various toxicities in elderly patients: 3 case reports Three elderly patients aged 75 years or older developed various toxicities resulting in death during or following chemoradiation for oesophageal cancer [sexes, routes and dosages not stated]. Patient 1 died of pulmonary haemorrhage and acute respiratory failure after receiving one cycle of cisplatin and fluorouracil, in combination with 16.2Gy of radiotherapy. Patient 2 experienced sudden death after receiving one cycle of fluorouracil in combination with 3.6Gy of radiotherapy. Patient 3 died of sepsis due to persistent neutropenia one month after completing 50.4Gy of radiotherapy and four cycles of chemotherapy with cisplatin, irinotecan and cetuximab. Author comment: "[F]ull-dose chemoradiation can cause severe toxicity in even the most healthy and functional patients older than 75 years old." Mak RH, et al.
