Carbamazepine

Hepatal lesion of splenium corporis callosi: casereport

A 27-year-old man developed hepatal lesion of spleniumcorporis callosi during treatment with carbamazepine. Theman received carbamazepine at 800mg twice daily [route notstated] for complex partial seizures of lateral temporal lobeorigin without secondary generalisation. The seizurespersisted with frequency of once per month. An MRI revealedoval lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum which washyperintense on FLAIR and T2-weighted MR images [durationof treatment of reaction onset not stated]. Carbamazepine wasreplaced with oxcarbazepine and lamotrigine. Few weeks later, the lesions disappeared.

Author comment: "Due to hepatal lesion caused by[carbamazepine], the therapy was switched to 1200 mg ofoxcarbazepine"Nankovic S, et al. Transient lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosumassociated with carbamazepine: A case report. Epilepsia 55: 47, Jun 2014 [abstract]- Croatia 803106441
