Multiple fetal anomalies following in uteroexposure: case report

Multiple fetal anomalies occurred at 17 weeks’ gestation[sex not stated] following in utero exposure tooxcarbazepine and topiramate.

The fetus’ mother, a 32-year-old woman, wascontinuously receiving topiramate 100mg andoxcarbazepine 300mg following a brain operation 2 yearspreviously [frequencies and routes not stated]. She wasadmitted at 17 weeks’ gestation, and ultrasound of thefetus revealed severe oligohydramnios, pericardiac fluidcollection, cardiomegaly, lower extremity limb defects, acleft lip and palate, an absent right kidney and a dysplasticleft kidney. She underwent a cordocentesis procedure, andabortion was medically induced. Autopsy of the fetusadditionally revealed absence of the left lower extremity, anabsent right foot, an absent right forearm, absent radiusand four digit of the left arm, adrenal gland aplasia, andhypoplasia of the urinary bladder and rectum.
