DOG FACTS:• It is a myth that dogs
are color blind. They can actually see in col-or, just not as vividly as humans. It is akin to our vision at dusk.
• Dogs DO have bet-ter low-light vision than humans because of a special light-reflecting layer behind their reti-nas.
• If never spayed or neutered, a female dog, her mate, and their pup-pies could produce over 66,000 dogs in 6 years!
• Like human babies, Chihuahuas are born with a soft spot in their skull which closes with age.
• A one year old dog is as mature, physically, as a 15 year old human.
• The U.S. has the highest dog population in the world.
• Dogs can be trained to detect epileptic sei-zures.
• Humans have kept dogs as pets for over 12,000 years.
• An African wolf dog known as the basenji is the only dog in the world that cannot bark.
• A dog’s smell is more than 100,000 times stronger than that of a human’s.
• Dogs judge objects first by their movement, then by their bright-ness, and lastly by their shape.
• Dogs are all direct descendants of wolves.

Shepherd’s Pie is a layered casserole of beef, carrots, and potato. It makes a hearty meal for early spring, when the temperatures are still cool and the wind can get raw.
Ingredients: 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese salt and pepper to taste 5 carrots, chopped 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 onion, chopped 1 pound lean ground beef 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon ketchup 3/4 cup beef broth 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
Directions:Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Ready in: 50 minutes
1- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash. Mix in butter, finely chopped onion and 1/4 cup shredded cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste; set aside.
2- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add carrots and cook until tender but still firm, about 15 minutes. Drain, mash and set aside. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C.)
3- Heat oil in a large frying pan. Add onion and cook until clear. Add ground beef and cook until well browned. Pour off excess fat, then stir in flour and cook 1 minute. Add ketchup and beef broth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
4- Spread the ground beef in an even layer on the bottom of a 2 quart casserole dish. Next, spread a layer of mashed carrots. Top with the mashed potato mixture and sprinkle with remain-ing shredded cheese.
5- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Turn up that dial! It’s time for Broadway’s room-raising rock ‘n roll musical “Memphis: The Mu-sical.” It will be presented at the Arts Center of Cannon County March 11-26. Directed by Darryl Deason, it stars Michael Adcock and Melinda Paul. “Memphis: The Musical” is rated PG.
Memphis is set in the places where rock and roll was born in the 1950s: the seedy nightclubs, radio stations, and recording studios of the musically-rich Tennessee city. With an original score, it tells the fictional story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good ole’ local boy with a passion for R&B
music, and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer that he meets one fateful night on Beale Street.
Despite the objections of their loved ones (Huey’s close-mind-ed mama and Felicia’s cautious brother, a club owner), they em-bark on a dangerous affair. As their careers rise, the relation-ship is challenged by personal ambition and the pressures of an outside world unable to accept their love.
Performances run March 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m.; and March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 with discounts available
for students and seniors and can be purchased by calling (615) 563-2787 Tuesday through Satur-day 10 a.m. -4 p.m., or online at artscenterofcc.com and (subject to availability) at the door one hour prior to show time.
The Arts Center is located on 1424 John Bragg Highway, just west of the town of Wood-bury, approximately 20 minutes from Murfreesboro, Manchester, and McMinnville and one hour southeast of Nashville. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tues-day through Saturday. For more information call 615-563-(ARTS) 2787.

1941 Blizzard unexpectedly hits North Dakota and Minnesota
A fast-moving and severe blizzard hits North Dakota and Minnesota, killing 151 people, on this day in 1941. Weather fore-casting and reporting made important ad-vances following this disaster that would have prevented the loss of life that oc-curred due to the sudden storm.
The people of North Dakota and north-ern Minnesota had nearly no warning of the blizzard that swept in suddenly from the west on March 15. In some locations, temperatures dropped 20 degrees in less than 15 minutes. Fifty-mile-per-hour sus-tained winds (with gusts reaching 85 mph in Grand Forks and 75 mph in Duluth) brought blinding snow and huge 7-foot-high snow drifts across the states.
Most of the victims of the blizzard were traveling in their cars when it hit. High-way 2, running from Duluth, Minnesota, to North Dakota, was shut down, as were Highways 75 and 81. Attempts to rescue those stranded in their cars came too late. In one incident, six-year-old Wilbert Tre-ichel died from exposure to the cold as his parents attempted to carry him through the blizzard to safety.
Two thousand people attending a basket-ball game in Moorhead, Minnesota, were stranded at the arena overnight when it was wisely decided that travel was too dan-gerous. Theaters, hotels and stores across the region were also forced to stay open through the night because so many peo-ple had visited them, unaware that a ma-jor storm was approaching. Although the storm was also severe in Manitoba, Cana-da, only seven people there died because the population was much better prepared for the storm and for dangerous weather in general.
In the aftermath of this blizzard, weath-ermen in North Dakota and Minnesota–who had been under the control of the Chi-cago meteorology office, which was more concerned with local weather concerns and paid less attention to events occurring to the north–were allowed autonomy in their reporting. Protected with new technolog-ical advances in the wake of the disaster, area residents hoped they would never again be so blind-sided by a winter storm.

Regular horses have a walk, trot or jog, canter or lope, and gallop. “Gaited” horses, which includes our Tennessee Walkers, have a smoother way of moving where one foot is always on the ground. These gaits are natural and do not require special shoes or training, although it can be exaggerated with these aids. Many local shows allow both types of horses in open classes.

Weekly Pet Horoscopes PiscesYou’re feeling a bit self-centered in the beginning of the week, and your pet could suffer. Be sure to take care
of your animal-related responsibilities on Monday and Tuesday. You’re ready to include everyone in on the fun by Wednesday and Thursday, and your pet will be more than happy to accompany you! If a sign says ‘no pets allowed’ on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, however, be sure to heed its warning.
AriesThe Moon increases your curiosity on Monday and Tuesday, so if you’ve been thinking about getting a new
kind of pet, these are great days to do some investigative research. An obligation to a friend or family member may keep you from getting home at a reasonable time, so if you have a pet on a regular feeding or exercise schedule, be sure to have someone look out for them. Hard work with a pet pays off at week’s end; reward them accordingly.
TaurusDon’t be surprised if you are asked to watch someone else’s pet, or acquire a new one from somewhere on
Monday or Tuesday. If you can’t afford to keep the pet, do whatever you can to find a comfortable home for it. Surprises are kept to a minimum the rest of the week, but on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday you may be feeling a bit unbalanced. Your pet is more in tune with your emotions than you may know.
GeminiYou’re well aware of your strengths on Monday and Tuesday, one of them being patience. You’ll probably
need it - prepare for your pet to give you a bit of trouble on these days, but it will be nothing you can’t handle! Avoid impulsive pet purchases midweek, but look forward to a business matter involving animals over the weekend. Some kind of pet-related proposal could be lucrative on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
CancerYour mind is active in the beginning of the week, but your body may not follow. Hold off on any strenuous
exercise involving you and/or your pet until later in the week. Your animal pal can strengthen a friendship somehow on either Wednesday or Thursday; they may be instrumental in solving a problem or helping you out of a dilemma. Budgetary constraints may stop you from doing something you want with your pet on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Staying close to home can be fun, too.

Mark your calendars and make plans to join us for the Semi-Annual Breeding Soundness Day conducted Saturday, March 19, at Middle Tennessee Veterinarian Service hosted by Dr. Mandy Hagan Willis.
The cost for the exam is $45 and includes exam, vac-cinations and deworming with the help of sponsorship from Zoetis/Pfizer animal health and testing for BVD and Johne’s disease. To reserve your spot, call 931-409-3178 or email [email protected] and make an appointment between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The minimum age for test-ing is 12 months and is most accurate if the bull is at least 15 months. Failure to proper-ly evaluate bulls prior to and during the breeding season can result in huge economic losses, yet it is estimated only about 10 percent of beef bulls in the nation undergo a bull
breeding soundness evalua-tion.
NEW GUIDELINES FOR THE TENNESSEE AGRICULTURAL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
– The Tennessee Department of Agriculture recently released the new program schedule for FY 2016-17.
Nov. 1-7 is now the new application week. It is antici-pated the applications will be distributed Sept. 1, 2016. New reimbursement dead-lines are May 1 for livestock equipment and Sept. 1 for all other programs. It is hoped this new schedule will allow for: 1) more dry days for building structures; 2) more time to get old program fin-ished before starting new program; and 3) allow all TAEP staff working on approving applications as soon as they arrive. Visit the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement website for
more information: www.tn.gov/agriculture/topic/ag-farms-enhancement.
PLANT MANAGEMENT FOR THE HOME GARDEN
-- Maybe it’s the health or nutritional benefits. Maybe it’s the pride and joy associ-ated with successfully culti-vating a living plant. Or maybe it’s just a way to get off our electronic devices and reconnect with the outdoors.
Whatever the reason, Tennesseans are increasingly interested in gardening. Natalie Bumgarner, an assis-tant professor of horticulture with University of Tennessee Extension and statewide coordinator of the Master Gardener program, knows this first hand. Her phone has been ringing off the hook.
“This is the time of year when folks are tired of cold weather and they begin to think about spring and get-
ting outdoors. For many, that means gardening,” Bumgarner said.
An expert in both residen-tial and consumer horticul-ture, Bumgarner has pub-lished a new guide to Tennessee gardening. “The Tennessee Vegetable Garden: Plant Management Practices” is intended to help new and experienced home gardeners understand the importance of key gardening topics like weed manage-ment, water management, plant support and pruning.
The publication is avail-able for free on the UT Extension website. One of the first steps to successful
gardening is understanding and managing weeds.
“A weed is a plant com-peting with the intended garden crop for water, nutri-ents and sunlight. They can also host insects and diseases that can reduce crop yields and quality,” Bumgarner said. “Weed management may well be the most import-ant factor in producing suc-cess or frustration in the home garden.”
Bumgarner’s publication discusses cultural practices that can help gardeners man-age weeds, including differ-ent mulching practices, row spacing and soil manage-ment and chemical controls. It also covers the basics of crop support options like using stakes, cages, trellises or twining systems.
Bumgarner outlines some basic pruning techniques and reminds gardeners that pruning can help increase the size and quantity of the
fruit as well as reduce the spread of some plant diseas-es. “One of the most com-mon reasons for pruning is to manage the fruit load, or plant spread. For example, carefully removing some lat-eral branches, called suck-ers, on an indeterminate tomato plant could increase the size of the remaining fruit or enable the plant to be more easily managed.,” she said.
To download the publica-tion, visit the UT Extension website: extension.tennessee.edu and click on the menu link to “Publications.” Enter Publication Number W346-D into the search engine, click onto the link to full title.
