Horse Grooming Tips:

1. Invest in quality brushes and keep them clean. You can’t do a thorough job grooming your horse with dirty or dusty brushes. Plus, keeping them clean will help them last longer.2. To avoid fungal infections, don’t use your brushes on other horses.3. Curry your horse every day. The more you curry, the more you bring the oils in the skin to the sur-face. When it comes to currying, there is no substitute for good old-fashioned elbow grease.4. Select curries ac-cording to the sea-son. Winter curries are actually shed-ding blades that aid in removing hair as your horse sheds. Summer curries are round rubber brushes that come in a variety of sizes and styles. Choose a small, soft curry brush for the face and a larger one for the body. 5. Brush the hair in the direction the hair grows.

Horse hooves are made from the same protein that comprises human hair and fingernails. Hooves should be trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

Chunky Cheesecake BrowniesIngredients: 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened3/4 cup white sugar 3 eggs 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1/4 cup butter 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:1-Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2-Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.3-Combine cream cheese with 1/4 cup sugar and 1 egg in a mixing bowl; beat until smooth. 4-Stir 1 cup chocolate chips into the cream cheese mixture. Set aside.5-Fill a saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Turn the heat off, and set a heatproof mixing bowl over the water. In the mixing bowl, combine butter with the remaining cup of chocolate chips; stir until just melted and blended together. Stir in the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 2 eggs, then sift together flour,

baking powder, and salt; stir into chocolate until evenly blended.6-Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan. Spread the cream cheese mix-ture over the chocolate layer. Top with re-maining chocolate mixture (this doesn’t need to completely cover the cream cheese layer). Using a knife, swirl the top chocolate layer into the cream cheese to make a marble pattern.7-Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes, or until top is crinkled and edges pull away from sides of the pan.8-Cool thoroughly. Cut into 12 to 16 squares. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.

Dog Grooming Tips• Make sure to use a shampoo that’s made for dogs. Human shampoo can be too harsh for your dog’s skin and coat. Put a non-slip surface, such as a bath mat or towel, in the bottom of your tub (or sink, kiddie pool, or wher-

ever you are doing your bathing). Lather up the coat, and then rinse thoroughly. Be sure to rinse com-pletely or the sham-poo will leave a dull residue on your dog’s fur. Avoid getting shampoo and water directly in the eyes, mouth and inside the

ears.• You should brush your dog every cou-ple of days no matter what the length of the coat. Sometimes your brushing can have a specific purpose, such as removing hair mats or helping them shed their sea-sonal coat, but most

often you’ll just be doing a general pur-pose brushing or combing. • Nails should be checked and clipped approximately every two weeks. They are probably too long if you can hear them “click” as your dog walks across the floor.

Page 12 The Pioneer Shopper McMinnville, Tennessee, February 2, 2016

Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday cele-brated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its bur-row on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.Modern customs of the holiday involve celebra-

tions where early morning festivals are held to watch the groundhog emerging from its burrow. The celebration began as a Pennsylvania Ger-

man custom in southeastern and central Penn-sylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has its origins in ancient European weather lore, where-in a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator, as opposed to a groundhog. It also bears similar-ities to the Pagan festival of Imbolc (the seasonal turning point of the Celtic calendar, which is cel-ebrated on February 2 and also involves weath-er prognostication), and to St. Swithun’s Day on July 15.According to Groundhog Day organizers, the

rodents’ forecasts are accurate 75% to 90% of the time. However, a Canadian study for 13 cities in the past 30 to 40 years found that the weather patterns predicted on Groundhog Day were only 37% accurate over that time period. According to the StormFax Weather Almanac and records kept since 1887, Punxsutawney Phil’s weather pre-dictions have been correct 39% of the time. The National Climatic Data Center has described the forecasts as “on average, inaccurate” and stated that “the groundhog has shown no talent for pre-dicting the arrival of spring, especially in recent years.”The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held

in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with Punxsut-awney Phil. Groundhog Day, already a wide-ly recognized and popular tradition, received widespread attention as a result of the 1993 film Groundhog Day.Groundhog Day is a 1993 American fantasy com-

edy film directed by Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott. It was written by Ramis and Danny Rubin, based on a story by Rubin.Murray plays Phil Connors, an arrogant Pitts-

burgh TV weatherman who, during an assign-ment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again. After indulging in hedonism and commit-ting suicide numerous times, he begins to re-ex-amine his life and priorities. In 2006, the film was added to the United States

National Film Registry as being deemed “cultur-ally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. A stage musical version of the film is scheduled to premiere in 2016.

Monthly HoroscopesAquariusThere are worse things than having to do routine work. Use the first half of January to file paperwork, catch up on correspondence, and clean up your surroundings. Although you won’t get much fame and acclaim for these contributions, you’ll be glad to have everything in order when work ramps up again. A close partnership may show signs of strain around January 23. A manager or high-powered executive could try to drive a wedge between you and a colleague. If you’re forced to compete against each other for a promotion, stay professional. You don’t need to resort to cheap tricks to get ahead.PiscesYou’ll have a chance to work with talented professionals in early January. This is a great chance to improve your interpersonal skills. Observe how a popular team member handles difficult clients, colleagues, and superiors. Your career will improve if you take a page from their book. A demanding colleague could drive everyone to distraction near January 23. No matter what accommodations you make, this person will still be unhappy. It’s better to ignore the com-plaints and continue to do your job. The bad attitude will be noticed eventually, resulting in the person’s dismissal. There could be a big party later!AriesAn exciting opportunity to advance your career could arrive soon after January 9. Make sure to apply for any high-profile position. The competition will be fierce, but your im-pressive experience could put you over the top. It may not be possible to take a vacation at the end of the month. If your request for time off is denied, remain philosophical. You can still relax and enjoy yourself close to home. Since there won’t be much creative fulfill-ment at work, you might want to take an art class. Your job won’t seem so burdensome if you have an outlet for your imagination.
