Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity are ham-mering away at their 28th house in Warren County.

“Habitat here was founded in 1996 and we built our first house in Warren County in 1998,” said Habitat for Humanity board president Steve Koelbl as he assisted with the latest build for Kathy Morton and grandson, Tyler, on Willow Run.

Habitat for Humanity is a faith-based international organization that seeks to help in building and reno-vating houses for families that qualify based on income and need. Habitat’s ultimate goal is to completely eliminate poverty housing and homelessness. Habitat was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller and his wife, Linda. Since that time, there have been 1,500 affiliates around the world and 800,000 homes had been built as of 2014.

Calling their mission a “hand up not a hand out,” the families who get help from the organization both participate in the build and are expected to pay for the houses.

“The family will con-tribute 300 hours,” Koelbl said, noting adults are expected to contribute at least 100 hours of “sweat equity” (service work) apiece.

The houses are built with volunteer labor. The completed houses are sold and financed over 20 to 30 years and are inter-

est free. The monthly house payment is used to finance the construction of more houses.

Koelbl said the dedica-tion estimate for the three-bedroom, two-bath Willow Run house is June 28. Numerous volunteers will work during that time. The walls were raised by JROTC, Oasis, and Clark Construction but other volunteers will come along and work on the various areas of the house as work continues on weekends.

“I think this is awe-some,” said Kathy Morton as she served lunch to the volunteers. “I loved watching as the walls went up. All the volunteers working together has been great. It’s really a community effort and we’re so appre-ciative.”

Habitat accepts all the help it can get, whether it be volunteer labor, contri-bution of materials or land, or even monetary donations. Habitat also operates Warren County Habitat for Humanity Restore, located at 191 Industrial Drive in the old cheese plant building. People may donate items to sell there or may come by and buy items. The proceeds go to Habitat.

The Habitat Restore is open Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

1982 - Earthquake and volcano do double damage in Mexico

The combination of an earthquake and a volcanic eruption at El Chichon in southern Mexico converts a hill into a crater, kills thou-sands of people and destroys acres of farm-land on this day in 1982. The eruptions, which continued for over a week, caught many of the area residents unaware and unprepared.

For most of the residents living in the shad-ow of El Chichon (also known as Chinho-nal), the 4,500-foot mountain seemed to pose no danger. Because its last eruption was 130 years earlier and minor, most people ignored its potential for destruction and enjoyed the fertile soil its volcanic past provided. Howev-er, late in 1981, two geologists, intrigued by hot springs and steaming gaps in the earth near the volcano, did an investigation that revealed increased seismic activity and the possibility of a major eruption of the volcano. Unfortunately, their report was ignored.

Area residents also failed to pay attention when the ground began shaking on the night of March 28. But at 5:15 a.m. the following morning, no one could miss the combination earthquake and eruption that exploded the mountain. Ash was sent flying 60,000 feet in the air. About 150 people were killed when their roofs collapsed under raining volcanic debris. Two days later, ash from the eruption fell in Austin, Texas, many hundreds of miles to the north.

Most of the approximately 2,000 people killed by the eruption died from exposure to the pyroclastic flow, a volatile mix of hot par-ticles and gas. El Chichon lost its entire top, leaving only a large crater 1,000 feet deep and, at less than 700 feet high, shorter than the surrounding hills. Two more major erup-tions occurred on April 3 and 4. In these, the debris was sent so high that it came down as virtual landslide on the surrounding vil-lages. Trees and buildings were no match for the dirt and rocks. The debris also blocked streams, causing flooding in the area. Nine entire villages were destroyed and more than 100 square miles of farmland were unusable for years.

Overall, the energy released by the erup-tions, which were similar in scope to the Mount St. Helens eruptions in Washington in 1980, was the equivalent of 8,000 one-kiloton atomic bombs.

One in 5,000 people have Hereditary Hemmoraghic Telangiectasia, but fewer than 10 percent have been diagnosed.

Local resident Celeste Farr would like to increase awareness of the disease by holding a Walk-N-Rollathon on the walking trail at McMinnville Civic Center on April 23 from 1-2 p.m. If it rains, the walk will be moved to April 30.

“My son Jason passed away last year and he was struggling with HHT. That was one of the reasons I decided to do this. I’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years, but this is the first year I’ve decided to go ahead and do it,” said Farr.

Farr’s mother, Elaine Vachon, and her daughter, Elaina Farr, also have the condition.

HHT is an inherited disease that

affects over 1.4 million people worldwide. It is caused by defec-tive blood vessels in the brain, lungs, liver, nose, skin, and intes-tines, and typically begins with nosebleeds during childhood. HHT is highly treatable but can result in serious health problems if not promptly diagnosed and treat-ed. There is currently no cure.

Farr hopes this event will help reach some of the 90 percent who have the condition but are undiag-nosed.

“The main symptom people have are nosebleeds,” said Farr. “If you say nosebleeds run in our family, then you should get checked because it could be a lot more serious than just nosebleeds. This event is raise awareness in the community and raise funds for the HHT Foundation. They do research

and community awareness as well.”

Individuals interested in partici-pating in Walk-N-Rollathon are encouraged to pick up a sponsor-ship envelope at one of the follow-ing sponsor locations: Citizens Tri-County Bank, The Hope Center of Warren County, Highland Rim Music & Firearms, Collins River BBQ, Juicy’s Wellness Café, Topz Frozen Yogurt Café, The Outdoor Shop, Underwood’s True Value Hardware, Moore’s Office Supplies, and Benji Songer Logging.

Participants are invited to bring strollers, wear rollerblades or roll-er skates, or just a good pair of walking shoes during the event.

For more information, Farr can be reached at 931-314-4789 or at [email protected].
