Conventional oil

Conventional oil is formulat-ed with addi-tive packages to ensure that it has the proper heat tolerance, breakdown re-sistance, and viscosity (thick-ness and fluidi-ty) that engines require. For many vehicles, conventional oil is sufficient to get the prover-bial job done. Depending on your applica-tion, stepping up to a more ro-bust motor oil may be the right solution.

High Mileage oil

High Mileage oil is meant for vehicles that have over 75,000 miles on the odome-ter. High-mile-age oil features unique additives that help to pro-

tect seals, which in turn prevents oil evaporation, also known as burn-off, a prob-lem that can oc-cur more easily in older engines. High-mileage, h i g h - p e r f o r -mance vehicles, however, would benefit from us-ing a synthetic oil as opposed to high-mileage.

Synthetic oilSynthetic or “full synthetic” oil is engineered spe-cifically to pro-vide the highest level of lubrica-tion in high and low tempera-tures, which re-sults in better overall engine protection. Syn-thetic oil has superior cleans-

ing properties which help to keep your en-gine cleaner. While it is the most expensive type of motor oil, it is consid-ered by many to be the best type of oil that you can put in your car. However, not every car re-quires synthetic oil. If your driving conditions are not ideal, syn-thetic oil might be the best op-tion for you. In bases of stop and go traffic, short trips, or very cold or hot temperatures, stepping up to synthetic might be the best case scenario. Check your

owner’s manu-al to determine whether you ve-hicle requires synthetic oil. Most newer cars require synthet-ic oil but older cars should run just fine with a conventional oil unless your car has over 75,000 miles on it, in which case a high-mileage oil is recommend-ed.

Donatello: Italian sculptor Donatello was the greatest Florentine sculptor before Michel-angelo (1475–1564) and was the most influential individual artist of the 15th century in Italy.Born in Florence, Italy, around 1386, sculptor Donatello apprenticed early with well-known sculptors and quickly learned the Gothic style. Before he was 20, he was receiving commis-sions for his work. Over his career he developed a style of lifelike, high-ly emotional sculptures and a reputation second only to Michelangelo’s.Donatello, the early Ital-ian Renaissance sculp-tor, was born Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi in Florence, Italy, some-time in 1386. His friends and family gave him the nickname “Donatel-lo.” He was the son of Niccolo di Betto Bardi, a member of the Flo-rentine Wool Combers Guild. This gave young Donatello status as the son of a craftsman and placed him on a path of working in the trades. Donatello was educat-ed at the home of the Martellis, a wealthy and influential Florentine family of bankers and art patrons closely tied to the Medici family. It was here that Donatello probably first received artistic training from a local goldsmith. In 1403, he apprenticed with Florence met-alsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. A few years later, Ghiberti was commissioned to create the bronze doors for the Baptistery of the Flor-ence Cathedral, beating out rival artist Filippo Brunelleschi. Donatel-lo assisted Ghiberti in

creating the cathedral

doors.By 1408, Donatello was back in Florence at the workshops of the ca-thedral. That year, he completed the life-sized marble sculpture, Da-vid. The figure follows a Gothic style, popular at the time, with long graceful lines and an expressionless face. The work reflects the influences of sculptors of the time. Technically, it’s very well executed, but it lacks the emotion-al style and innovative technique that would mark Donatello’s later work. Rapidly maturing in his art, Donatello soon be-gan to develop a style all his own, with figures much more dramat-ic and emotional. Be-tween 1411 and 1413, he sculpted the marble fig-ure St. Mark, placed in an exterior niche of the Orsanmichele Church, which also served as the chapel of Florence’s powerful craft and trade guilds. In 1415, Donatel-lo completed the marble statue of a seated St. John the Evangelist for the cathedral in Flor-ence. Both works show a decisive move away from the Gothic style and toward a more clas-sical technique.By this time, Donatello was gaining a reputa-tion for creating im-posing, larger-than-life figures using innova-tive techniques and ex-traordinary skills. His style incorporated the new science of perspec-tive, which allowed the sculptor to create figures that occupied measurable space. Be-fore this time, Euro-pean sculptors used a flat background upon which figures were placed. Donatello also

drew heavily from real-ity for inspiration in his sculptures, accurately showing suffering, joy and sorrow in his fig-ures’ faces and body po-sitions.Donatello had nurtured a close and lucrative re-lationship with Cosimo de’ Medici in Florence. In 1430, the eminent art patron commissioned Donatello to do anoth-er statue of David, this time in bronze. This is probably Donatello’s most famous work. The sculpture is fully independent from any architectural surround-ings that might support it. Standing a little over five feet tall, David rep-resents an allegory of civic virtue triumphing over brutality and irra-tionality.In 1443, Donatello was called to the city of Padua by the family of the famous mercenary Erasmo da Narni, who had died earlier that year. In 1450, Donatel-lo completed a bronze statue called Gattame-lata, showing Erasmo riding a horse in full battle dress, minus a helmet. This was the

first equestrian statue cast in bronze since the Romans. The sculpture created some controver-sy, as most equestrian statues were reserved for rulers or kings, not mere warriors. This work became the proto-type for other equestri-an monuments created in Italy and Europe in the following centuries.By 1455, Donatello had returned to Florence and completed Magda-lene Penitent, a statue of a gaunt-looking Mary Magdalene. Commis-sioned by the convent at Santa Maria di Cestello, the work was probably intended to provide comfort and inspiration to the repentant pros-titutes at the convent. Donatello continued his work taking on com-missions from wealthy patrons of the arts. His lifelong friendship with the Medici family earned him a retirement allowance to live on the rest of his life. He died of unknown causes on December 13, 1466, in Florence and was bur-ied in the Basilica of San Lorenzo, next to Cosi-mo de’ Medici.

Art History Lesson

Donatello’s David, depicting the classic contrapposto stance, was cast in bronze in 1430s.

On this day in 1993, production begins on Toy Story, the first full-length feature film created by the pioneering Pixar Animation Studios. Origi-nally a branch of the filmmaker George Lucas’s visual effects company, Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), Pixar first put itself on the map with special effects produced for films such as Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), which featured the first fully three-dimensional digital or com-puter-generated image (CGI). In 1986, Pixar be-came an independent company after it was pur-chased by Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Computer. In 1991, based on the success of Pixar’s short

films, the company signed a $26 million deal with the Walt Disney Company to develop, pro-duce and distribute up to three animated fea-ture films. The Little Mermaid (1989) had become Disney’s most successful film to date, and the company was ready to take more chances on in-novative animation techniques. Approached by Lasseter about a possible Christmas program, Disney’s chief of film production, Jeffrey Kat-zenberg, instead responded with the three-pic-ture deal.Toy Story was the first Pixar-Disney collabora-

tion, and the first feature-length animated film that was completely computer generated. Its plot revolved around the rivalry between the cowboy Woody, previously the favorite toy of a little boy named Andy, and Buzz Lightyear, a shiny new astronaut toy that Andy receives for a birthday present. Multiple Oscar-winner Tom Hanks lent his famous voice to Woody, while Tim Allen of TV’s Home Improvement was Buzz. Though Pixar’s long development process in-cluded drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs, the final work for the film was all done on computers. The sophisticated anima-tion created a vivid three-dimensional world full of color and movement, where toys–includ-ing such childhood classics as toy soldiers, Mr. Potato Head and Etch-a-Sketch–come to life.Released in November 1995, Toy Story received

universally positive reviews, and would even-tually gross more than $192 million at the do-mestic box office and $358 million worldwide. Lasseter received a special Academy Award for leading the Pixar team, and the movie became the first animated feature ever to score an Os-car nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Toy Story’s tremendous success, and that of later films such as Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, earned Pixar the reputation of Hollywood’s pre-eminent animation studio. In 2006, in an effort to continue (and strengthen) the bond between the two companies, Disney bought Pixar–for which Jobs had paid $10 million in 1986–for a staggering $7.4 billion.

2016: Intense Efforts, Shining Success

Well, isn’t this refreshing: every effort you make this year will be rewarded in due time. We all know that making a living, relationships, and just the little things in everyday life take a lot of work. Well, this year you’ll be up and run-ning, and appreciated. Yes, the Universe might actually cooperate more often than not! Shocking, I know.

The catch: you still need to work hard. It isn’t all about luck and fate. That needs your push and collected good karma. So, what realm needs the biggest boost? You decide, and then focus your efforts and attention there and watch things happen.

Why should you take on the world on alone when you can be more intense and effective with those who share your vision of the future? That future is yours (along with your chosen few teammates) to create now. 2016 is a year of teamwork, and of shared efforts with partners and loved ones. And that includes celebrating your wins, too!

If you start to feel overwhelmed or frustrated, shift your focus to fewer or more minor things. No effort is small if done with passion. Then let some of this year’s good luck go to work for you. A small dose of faith and luck will go far at crucial times.

In numerology, 2016 is a 9 year, and 9 is pure magic. It creates what it intensely visualizes, and then it vanishes and leaves room for the next new wonderful thing!

JobsYou have the skills,

you love the compa-ny, you have studied your interview ques-tions, now put the ic-ing on the cake and use these tips to look the part. You truly do only have one chance to make that import-ant first impression. For men:•Dress in a manner

that is professional-ly appropriate to the position for which you are applying. In almost all cases, this means wearing a suit. It is rarely appropriate to “dress down” for an interview, regard-less of company dress code policy. When in doubt, go conserva-tive.•You should wear

a suit to interviews. “Suit” means the works: a matching jacket and pants, dress shirt, tie, coordinating socks and dress shoes. A dark-colored suit with light colored shirt is your best option.•Your suit should

be comfortable and fit you well so that you look and act your best. There is a differ-ence between not yet feeling at ease in a suit and trying to fit into the same suit you wore to your sister’s wedding when you were 15. (In the latter case, it’s time to invest in a new suit!)•Avoid loud colors

and flashy ties.•Clothing should

be neat, clean, and pressed. If you don’t have an iron, either buy one or be pre-pared to visit the dry-cleaner’s often.

Shower or bathe the morning of the inter-view. Wear deodorant. Don’t wear cologne or aftershave. You don’t want to smell over-powering or worse, cause an allergic reac-tion.•Make sure you have

fresh breath. Brush your teeth before you leave for the interview, and don’t eat before the interview. Don’t smoke right before an interview.•Your hair should be

neat, clean, and con-servative.For women:•Generally, you

should wear a suit with a skirt or pants. When in doubt, be more conservative.•Your suit should

be comfortable and fit you well; if your waistband is cutting you in half or your jacket is too tight, you won’t look or act your best. Some stores offer free alterations when you purchase a suit, or you may want to find a tailor to adjust a suit you already own.•Interview suits

should be simple and dark in color. Any-thing tight, bright, short, or sheer should absolutely be avoid-ed. (Interviewers have been known to complain about the length of interview-ees’ skirts; if you have any doubts, it’s probably too short.) Knee-length skirts are suggested. Very long skirts, while modest, are also considered too trendy for an in-terview.•Wear a conservative

blouse with your suit. Do not wear bright colors, animal prints, or anything lacy, sheer, or low-cut.•Make-up and nail

polish should be un-derstated and flatter-ing; shades that are neutral to your skin tone are generally ad-visable. Avoid bright or unusual colors or very long nails.•Keep your jewelry

and hair accessories to a minimum, and stick to those that are not flashy, distracting, or shiny. One ring per hand is best.•Shoes should be

conservative and fair-ly low-heeled. They should be in reason-ably good condition, not scuffed or run-down at the heels. Don’t wear shoes with an open toe or back; any shoes you would wear on a date or to a club are probably inappropriate. A ba-sic pump is flattering, versatile, and will stay in style forever (once you own pumps, you can spend the rest of your money on fun shoes). The salesper-son in the shoe store can steer you in the right direction.•Your hose should

be neutral (matched to your skin tone). Make sure the heels are not dyed black from your shoes and that there are no snags or runs. Only use the nail pol-ish trick in an emer-gency; you may want to carry an extra pair of hose with you in-stead.•Dress in a manner

that is professional-

ly appropriate to the position for which you are applying. In almost all cases, this means wearing a suit. It is rarely appropriate to “dress down” for an interview, regard-less of company dress code policy. When in doubt, go conserva-tive (is this starting to sound familiar?).•Your clothing

should always be neat, clean, and pressed. If you don’t have an iron, either buy one or be prepared to visit the dry-cleaner’s of-ten.•Shower or bathe the

morning of the inter-view. Wear deodor-ant. Don’t wear per-fume: you don’t want to smell overpower-ing or worse, cause an allergic reaction.•Make sure you have

fresh breath. Brush your teeth before you leave for the inter-view, and don’t eat or smoke before the in-terview.•Your hair should

be neat, clean, and conservatively styled. Banana clips, bright-ly-colored scrunchies or elastics, and cheer-leader-type ponytails look out of place with a suit. You may want to wear your hair in an updo, pull it back into a low ponytail, or wear a barrette (this suggestion does not include the tiny lit-tle barrettes that only hold the front of your bangs back). The idea is to look polished and professional, not to advertise what a cre-ative genius your hair-dresser is.
