Reactions 1321 - 2 Oct 2010 S Oxcarbazepine Tardive dyskinesia in a child: case report An 8-year-old girl was diagnosed with epilepsy and began oxcarbazepine treatment. She underwent 1 week of therapy with oxcarbazepine 15 mg/kg/day [route not stated], with the dosage subsequently increased to 30 mg/kg/day. Three days after receiving the full dose, she was admitted to the emergency service with movement abnormalities. Physical examination revealed trismus, deviation of the eyes, tongue protrusion and lateral flexion of the trunk. Oxcarbazepine was withdrawn after the girl was diagnosed with tardive dyskinesia. She received single- dose IV diazepam and was subsequently treated with oral diphenhydramine for 2 weeks. In 3 days, her symptoms resolved. Author comment: "Use of the Naranjo ADR Probability Scale indicated a probable (the score was 6) relationship between tardive dyskinesia and [oxcarbazepine] therapy in this patient."
