I love making music with Dan. From the first time we played together around ten years ago, I immediately sensed some kind of telepathy. We didn’t have to discuss much. To make Lela, we played our favourite songs for two days, and a certain Romance theme emerged, as well as a stillness and heartfelt simplicity. Dan’s endless love for this music, his gentle modesty, and his luminous touch at the piano allowed us to access a wonderful spaciousness, and it’s my wish that anyone listening to our music will be able to take a moment out of their busy life to breathe, and to ebb and flow with us.

We have both somehow paid homage to our roots in these eleven tracks, drawing mostly upon jazz, but also classical lyricism, and the pith and pathos of continental folk music. Some of the first songs I ever learned are on here, and it feels like going home. Special mention must go to Dan’s wife, the clarinettist Rosa Campos-Fernandez, whose contribution gleams and glows in Lela and There at the Turnpike. Dan would probably wave his hand unassumingly at this suggestion, but we all know that the deeply romantic Spanish themes that have emerged in his pieces are miniature love songs to Rosa.

Celebrated vocalist, violinist and composer

Alice Zawadzki began her journey into jazz

at the age of 13 when she met legendary

New Orleans vocalist Lillian Boutté, who

became her mentor and with whom she was

touring as a vocalist by the age of 15. Alice

studied classical violin at the Royal Northern

College of Music, graduating in 2008 having

been awarded the Hilda Collens Prize and an

Emerging Artists Residency at Cove Park. She

later graduated with an M.A. from the Royal

Academy of Music, where she studied jazz

singing and composition with Pete Churchill,

Norma Winstone and Nia Lynn.

Her debut album ‘China Lane’ (Whirlwind

Recordings) has been toured live at most of

the major UK festivals and venues, was made

album of the week by BBC Radio 3, received

many four-star reviews, was performed

live for BBC Radio 2, and led to Alice being

nominated as British Vocalist of the Year by

both the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and Jazz

FM.

Her distinctive voice has led to engagements

as a vocal soloist with the Prague Philharmonic

(Planet Earth, BBC), the City of Oxford

Orchestra, and for numerous film and TV

credits including Sita in Disney‘s African Cats.

Alice sings and plays in several groups

internationally, delivers performances and

workshops for the charity Live Music Now, and

has taught vocal studies and improvisation

at Salford University, RNCM, Gifted+Talented,

The Sage Gateshead and Engines Orchestra,

as well as being a guest speaker for BBC Jazz

on 3.

Respected and highly sought-after pianist Dan Whieldon has made his name as a sideman and bandleader involved in a wealth of collaborations. He studied classical piano at Birmingham Conservatoire with Gordon Fergus-Thompson, winning awards including the Dennis Matthews Memorial Scholarship and the David Brookes Piano Prize. He later studied at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels with Diederik Wissels and Nathalie Loriers, gaining a Masters in Jazz with distinction. He also studied with Rob van Bavel and Enrico Pieranunzi, and became a celebrated fixture on the Brussels jazz scene.

On his return to the UK, Dan’s sensitive playing became renowned, and he has been a sideman of choice for Alan Barnes, Bobby Wellins, Art Themen, Tim Garland, Greg Abate, Simon Spillett, Steve Waterman, Jiggs Whigham, Marlene Verplanck, Tina May, and Lee Gibson.

His first recording as bandleader, ‘Live At

Zeffirelli’s’, was released to critical acclaim

in 2007 and, alongside duo recordings with

saxophonist Mike Hall, and vocalist Alice

Zawadzki, received radio play from BBC Radio

2 and BBC Radio 3 Jazz Line-Up. With Alice

Zawadzki, he has enjoyed numerous live

concerts from the Manchester International

Festival to the Taipei International Jazz Festival.

In 2008, Dan won first prize in the Nottingham

International Solo Jazz Piano competition, and

was a finalist at the Jimmy Woode International

Jazz Competition in Ronciglione, Italy. Dan’s

compositional output is widely celebrated,

and featured in the North West Jazz Real Book.

In 2009 he was made an Honorary Member of

Birmingham Conservatoire.

J’aime faire de la musique avec Dan. Dès le premier jour où nous avons joué ensemble il ya environ dix ans, j’ai ressenti comme une sorte de télépathie. Il n’était pas nécessaire de trop parler. Pour réaliser Lela, nous avons joué nos chansons préférées pendant deux jours, et une sorte de thème romantique a émergé, ainsi que calme et simplicité du cœur. L’amour de Dan pour cette musique, sa modestie, et son jeu lumineux au piano nous ont permis d’explorer un espace merveilleux, et j’espère que tous ceux qui écouteront notre musique trouveront un moment de calme dans leur vie bien remplie, pour respirer et voyager avec nous. Nous avons en quelque sorte tous deux rendu hommage à nos racines à travers ces dix titres, inspirés essentiellement du jazz, mais également du lyrisme classique et de la musique folklorique continentale. Certaines des premières chansons que j’ai apprises sont sur ce disque, et j’ai un peu l’impression de revenir à mes premiers amours. Une mention spéciale doit être accordée à la femme de Dan, la clarinettiste Rosa Campos-Fernandez, dont la contribution illumine Lela et There at the Turnpike. Dan sourcillera probablement devant une telle suggestion, mais nous savons tous que les thèmes espagnols profondément romantiques qui ont émergé dans ses pièces sont des chansons d’amour miniatures pour Rosa.

Ich liebe es mit Dan zu musizieren. Seit dem ersten Mal, als wir vor zehn Jahren zusammen gespielt haben, spürte ich unmittelbar eine Form von Telepathie. Um Lela zu schaffen, spielten wir unsere Lieblingsstücke zwei Tage hindurch, sodass eine bestimmte romantische Thematik, wie auch Stille und herzliche Einfachheit zum Vorschein kam. Es ist Dans unendliche Liebe für diese Musik, seine rücksichtsvolle Bescheidenheit, und sein brillianter Anschlag am Klavier, die uns den Zugang zu einer traumhaften Räumlichkeift gewähren und es ist mein Wunsch, dass jeder, der sich unsere Musik anhört, in der Lage sein wird einen Moment in seinem geschäftigem Leben durchzuatmen um das Auf- und Ab der Musik mit uns zu erleben.

Mit diesen zehn Stücken kehren wir zu unseren Wurzeln zurück, größtenteils bildet hierbei der Jazz unsere Basis, aber auch die klassische Lyrik, sowie Kern und Leidenschaft europäischer Volksmusik. Einige der ersten Lieder, die ich erlernte, sind auf dieser Aufnahme vertreten und vermitteln mir das Gefühl endlich Zuhause angekommen zu sein. Besonders möchte ich hierbei Dans Ehefrau, die Klarinettistin Rosa Campos-Fernandez, erwähnen, deren Mitwirkung in Lela und There at the Turnpike schimmert und leuchtet. Dan würde vermutlich bei einer solchen Andeutung mit seiner Hand bescheiden abwinken, aber wir alle wissen, dass die tief romantischen, spanischen Themen, die sich in diesen Stücken herauskristallisiert haben, kleine Liebeslieder an Rosa sind.

Als gefeierte Sängerin, Violinistin und Komponistin begann Alice Zawadzki ihre Reise in den Jazz im Alter von nur 13 Jahren, als sie die legendäre Sängerin Lillian Boutté aus New Orleans traf, die ihre Mentorin wurde und mit ihr ab ihrem 15. Lebensjahr auf Tour ging. Alice studierte klassische Violine am Royal Northern College of Music und schloss im Jahre 2008 mit dem Hilda Collens Preis und einem Stipendium für Nachswuchstalente am Cove Park ab. Später machte sie ihren Masterabschluss an der Royal Academy of Music, wo sie Jazzgesang und Komposition bei Pete Churchill, Norma Winstone und Nia Lynn studierte.
