Insect is the most abundant form of animal life on earth. Three quarters of a million species of insect have already been described and estimates for the number of species awaiting discovery range from 1 million to 30 million.
• Given that there are so many species of insect, it follows that insects are a major component of the earth's biodiversity. They inhabit every terrestrial and freshwater ecosystem and by studying the ecological roles insects play we can have a better understanding of how those ecosystems function. • Insects have important roles as plant consumers or herbivores, a food source for other organisms, scavengers or detritivores, predators and parasites, and also as producers like honey from honey bees and silk from silkworms.

• This chart illustrates approximate relative biodiversity of insects to other species groups. As can be seen from the chart, insect diversity surpasses that of all other groups. The generally quoted figure for described species is 1.4 million, of which 1.1 million are animals. It is estimated that insects make up to 75% of that 1.1 million, however, with large stretches of tropical forests still awaiting research and exploration, the actual numbers are likely to be significantly higher.
This chart illustrates the relative diversity within insect orders. Order Coleoptera is comprised of beetles, Order Hemiptera is comprised of 'true bugs' which includes cicadas and leafhoppers, Order Hymenopterais comprised of bees, ants, wasps and sawflies, Order Orthoptera is comprised of grasshoppers, crickets and katydids and Order Lepidoptera contains butterflies, skippers and moths.
