Reactions 401 - 16 May 1992 Carbamazepine overdose Neurological manifestations: 5 case reports Five children, aged 21 months to 14 years, were admitted after acute or chronic carbamazepine overdose. Presenting symptoms included coma, lethargy, nystagmus and respiratory depression. Peak carbamazepine concentrations ranged from 22-60 mcg/ml (therapeutic range 0.5-20 mcg/ml). Four of the children received multiple doses of activated charcoal and neurological status normalised in all of the children 9-36 hours postadmission Editorial comment: In 3 cases, the quantities of carbamazepine ingested were unknown. The other 2 patients developed neurological symptoms while receiving carbamazepine 100mg tid and 1 g/day, respectively. Wason S, et al.
