Carbamazepine overdose
Neurological manifestations: 5 case reportsFive children, aged 21 months to 14 years, were admitted
after acute or chronic carbamazepine overdose. Presentingsymptoms included coma, lethargy, nystagmus andrespiratory depression. Peak carbamazepine concentrationsranged from 22-60 mcg/ml (therapeutic range 0.5-20 mcg/ml).Four of the children received multiple doses of activatedcharcoal and neurological status normalised in all of thechildren 9-36 hours postadmission Editorial comment: In3 cases, the quantities of carbamazepine ingested wereunknown. The other 2 patients developed neurologicalsymptoms while receiving carbamazepine 100mg tid and 1g/day, respectively.Wason S, et al.
