On both occasions thrombosis was evident. Seven months after he began carbamazepine treatment, the man was admitted to hospital with an MI. Angiography revealed thrombosis of the right coronary artery with no evidence of arteriosclerosis in other coronary branches. His condition improved after symptomatic treatment. One month later he was readmitted with phlebitis of the right lower limb and pulmonary embolism. Thrombosis of the right femoral vein was diagnosed using ultrasonography and embolic images were found in the right lung. Fibrinolysis was begun and favourable progress was made. Laboratory tests showed that blood and platelet counts were normal and no other factors which typically cause thrombosis were present. Carbamazepine was then discontinued, and 15 months later thrombosis had not recurred. Simon JP, et al. Recurrent thrombosis with carbamazepine.
