Reactions 1393 - 17 Mar 2012 S Carbamazepine Drug hypersensitivity syndrome in an elderly patient: case report An 82-year-old woman developed drug hypersensitivity syndrome following treatment with carbamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia. The woman was hospitalised with pyrexia, exanthema and lymphadenopathy; three weeks prior, carbamazepine was initiated [route, dosage and time to reaction onset not stated]. Examination found disseminated maculopapular eruption in addition to occipital and axillary lymphadenopathy. Tests revealed leucocytosis, eosinophilia, lymphocytosis and thrombocytosis in addition to raised levels of lactate dehydrogenase and β-2 microglobulin; a low mean corpuscular volume was also detected. Splenomegaly and lymphadenopathy were observed on echosonography. She was diagnosed with carbamazepine-induced hypersensitivity syndrome. B cell lymphoma was also identified based on bone marrow biopsy and blood flow cytometry results. Carbamazepine was withdrawn, and corticosteroids were initiated. The woman was hospitalised with pyrexia, exanthemaand lymphadenopathy; three weeks prior, carbamazepinewas initiated [route, dosage and time to reaction onset notstated].
