Carbamazepine

Hypouricaemia: case reportA 13-year-old girl developed hypouricaemia following

therapy with carbamazepine. The girl was referred to outpatient clinic due to rolandic

epilepsy at the age of 10 years and she receivedcarbamazepine for 3 years [dosage and route not stated]. Herroutine blood chemical examinations and urinalysis showeddecreased serum urate levels and increased urate excretionrate. On electroencephalography, her rolandic dischargesdisappeared, and no epileptic fits had been observed after theintroduction of carbamazepine.

Subsequently, the girl’s carbamazepine was withdrawn andher serum urate level and urate excretion rate werenormalised.

Author comment: "Previous reports have describedhypouricemia in epileptic patients treated with phenytoin andcarbamazepine (CBZ), but the underlying underlyingmechanisms remain uncertain. Serial case studies areindicated to clarify the mechanisms of CBZ-inducedhypouricemia." "We encountered a 13-year-old girl withrolandic epilepsy who showed hypouricemia duringtreatment with CBZ."Kishi T, et al.
