Reactions 1350 - 7 May 2011 S Carbamazepine Seizure aggravation in a child: case report An 8-year-old boy with muscle-eye-brain disease, who had started having epileptic seizures in infancy, presented with daily complex partial seizures with secondary generalisation, and tonic-clonic seizures which were unresponsive to phenobarbital or valproic acid 800 mg/day, in combination with carbamazepine 400 mg/day [routes and duration of treatment not stated]. Valproic acid was stopped because of hyperammonaemia, and carbamazepine was increased to 600 mg/day. After a few days, however, his tonic-clonic seizures became more frequent. Carbamazepine was gradually withdrawn over a few months, and this reduced his seizure frequency. No further anti-epileptic drugs were administered. Belcastro V, et al.
