Seizure aggravation in a child: case reportAn 8-year-old boy with muscle-eye-brain disease, who
had started having epileptic seizures in infancy, presentedwith daily complex partial seizures with secondarygeneralisation, and tonic-clonic seizures which wereunresponsive to phenobarbital or valproic acid 800 mg/day,in combination with carbamazepine 400 mg/day [routesand duration of treatment not stated]. Valproic acid wasstopped because of hyperammonaemia, andcarbamazepine was increased to 600 mg/day. After a fewdays, however, his tonic-clonic seizures became morefrequent. Carbamazepine was gradually withdrawn over afew months, and this reduced his seizure frequency. Nofurther anti-epileptic drugs were administered.Belcastro V, et al.
