Oesophageal stricture in a child with Candidapericarditis: case report
A 3-year-old girl with Candida pericarditis developedoesophagus stricture during treatment with vincristine, doxorubicin, prednisolone and methotrexate for pre-B acutelymphoblastic leukaemia [dosage and duration of treatment toreaction onset not stated].
The girl was hospitalised on 6 November and received herfirst antineoplastic treatment of vincristine, doxorubicin, prednisolone and intrathecal injections of methotrexate. Fivedays after treatment initiation, she had Candida in her genitalarea and on her skin and tongue. Despite administration ofvarious antibacterials and antifungals, she developed Candidapericarditis, which was treated with voriconazole. On15 December, she was improving. Subsequently, shedeveloped progressive dysphagia and was unable to eat orswallow her own saliva; she was still receiving voriconazole.Barium oesophagography revealed a 6cm long stricture in herdistal oesophagus. On 25 April 2006, IV voriconazole wasreplaced by oral therapy. [Patient outcome not stated.]
Author comment: "It is speculated that thechemotherapeutic induced mucosa lesion in the eosophagusplus candida affection lead to a severe eosophageal stricture."Dahl C, et al.
