Reactions 1083 - 7 Jan 2006 S Antineoplastics Fatal human polyomavirus pneumonia in an elderly patient: case report A 69-year-old woman developed fatal human polyomavirus pneumonia after long-term antineoplastic therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). The woman had a 20-year history of CLL and had received numerous cycles of radiation therapy and antineoplastic therapy [drugs and dosages not stated]. As a result of this treatment, she was immunocompromised. She had a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and several hospitalisations for pneumonia. During her final admission, her lung function worsened progressively despite treatment with antibacterials and corticosteroids, and she died 73 days after her first admission for pneumonia. Subsequent histology revealed an extensive pattern of diffuse alveolar damage with interstitial pneumonitis.
