Formula OneFormula One (in short F1), in modern times

also known as Grand Prix motor racing is thehighest level of international car racing.

Drivers in special, very fast cars take part ina series of important races, called ”Grand Prix”,in several countries around the world. Races areheld usually on special tracks and, in a few ca-ses, on closed city streets, the most famous ofwhich is the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Car-lo. Europe is Formula One’s traditional centre,all of the teams are located there and around halfthe races take place there.

A modern Formula One car is a single-seatcar with an engine positioned behind the driver.The regulations say that cars must be construc-ted by the racing teams themselves.

Formula One drivers are some of the fittestathletes on earth – their bodies are adapted toextreme conditions. They must control theirdiets in the same way as other sportsmen. Theyalso have to drink large amounts of water befo-re the race, even if they do not feel thirsty beca-use they sweat a lot when they drive.

Flags are a very important part of the GrandPrix as they tell a driver of danger, success andfailure. They are the only way that race organi-sers can communicate with him during the ra-ce.
