A four member CISCO delegation, led by Dr. DouglasComer, Professor of Computing at Purdue University USA, andcurrently VP Research at Cisco USA, visited the Institute andtheDeptt. of E&CE on23.01.08.Theaimwastoexplore avenues forresearch collaboration with IIT Roorkee. The delegationcomprised of Mr. Manoj Goel (1981 alumnus), Manager ofBusiness Developmnt, and Mr. Raghavan, Manager of Tech.Center, both from CISCO, USAandMr.Arunkumar Ramanujan,StaffingManager,GlobalDevelopmentCenter,CISCOIndia.

During discussions with Director, Dy. Director and allDeans, and faculty of the E&CE Deptt., Prof. Comer emphasizedthe need for collaborating at the research level with faculty andstudentsfromeliteacademicInstitutes inIndiaandelsewhere.HeinvitedresearchproposalsinareasofcommoninteresttoIITRandCisco. The lecture was verywell-attended by faculty andstudents alikeand wasfollowed by alengthyquestion-answersession.

Thedelegation later met with the Computer Engineeringfaculty of the Department of E&CE whopresented theirresearchwork and had fruitful discussions with them. The delegation alsomet with the researchscholars and other post-graduate studentsof the Deptt. of E&CE, who apprised them of the work currentlybeing undertaken by them. Members of the delegation showedkeeninterestintheseactivitiesandidentifiedmanypossibleareasof collaborativeresearch.ThisdiscussionwasfollowedbyavisittotheCiscofundedNetworkSecuritylab.intheDeptt.ofE&CE.

Invited Talk on Renewable EnergyMr. Ravi Seethapathy, Manager, Distributed Generation &

Advanced Grid Development, Hydro One Networks Inc., Toronto,Canada was invitedbytheDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringfortechnical discussionson renewable energy on Jan. 11-12,2008. Hedelivered a talk on

which was attended by the Faculty, ResearchScholars and M.Tech. students of both Electrical EngineeringDepartment and Alternate Hydro Energy Centre. Through ameticulously prepared presentation, which included case studiesundertakenbyhiscompany,withwhomheisassociatedfor23years,he presented the network integrated issues related to distributedgeneration which are needed to be addressed adequately inplanning for maximizing the distributed generation. He stressed onthe need for collaboration among Universities, Government Labsand private sector agencies for evolving solutions of this importantproblem.ProfH. K. Verma,Dy.DirectorpresentedamementotoMr.Seethapathy.

HealsovisitedAHECandappreciatedtheexcellentfacilitiesand ongoing activities of the Centre. Mr. Seethapathy with Prof. S.P. Gupta, Head, ElectricalEngineering Department, visited a fewindustrial sites of renewableenergygenerationonJan.12,2008namely,3MWBelkaSmallHydroPower Plant at Behat; Energy Park at Uttarakhand RenewableEnergy Development Agency (UREDA), Dehra Dun; the 25 KWSolar PV Interactive Power Plant at Secretariat, UttarakhandGovernment, Dehra Dun and Bio-Gassifier Plant at M/S MKU Pvt.Ltd., Lal TapparIndustrialArea, HaridwarRoad, DehraDun.Healsoheld discussions on strengthening collaboration between IITRoorkeeand HydroOneinthefieldofRenewableEnergyResearchand its commercialization. He invited IIT Roorkee faculty for jointresearch with Candian institutions through funding from ShastriIndo-Canadian Institute (SICI). at Electrical Engineering Department on Jan. 9, 2008. The Workshopwas inaugurated by Prof. S.C. Saxena, Director, IIT Roorkee. Prof. S.P. Gupta,HeadofDepartmentandChairmanoftheWorkshopwelcomedthedelegates.TheWorkshopwasattendedbymorethan60delegatesconsistingoffacultymembers,Research students, PG and UG students including outstation participants.
