TERM 2 On Friday we reach the half-way point in the year – how quickly the last ten school weeks have gone. When we started the term, there was a level of uncertainty around the learning platforms for students. We moved to a full-time return of students quicker than initially thought; however, it has been so positive to return to a level of normality with learning, fun and excitement returning to school life. One of the most notable outcomes of the current Covid climate is the increase in uninterrupted learning time for students. Currently, without many of our extra-curriculum programs, classes have had the opportunity to further their learning alongside their teacher in the classroom. This has enabled teachers to reflect on student progress which occurred during the remote learning time. Teachers have modified programs to include revision of concepts and plan for future needs. 6 Namona Street, North Narrabeen NSW 2101 Phone: 9913 7928 Fax: 9913 7873 e-mail: [email protected] Website: narranorth-p.schools.nsw.gov.au Before and After School Care: 9913 2846 DATES TO REMEMBER Fri 3 July Tues 21 July Mon 27 July Wed 5 Aug Tue 11 Aug Tues 18 Aug Wed 19 Aug Wed 19 Aug Tues 25Thurs 27 Aug Tues 25 Aug Thurs 27 Aug Thurs 27 Aug Tues 1 Sep Tues 1 Sep Thurs 3 Sep Wed 16 Sep Fri 25 Sep Last day of Term 2 First day of Term 3—Students return to school PCS Extension Test School Photos School Photos—Siblings UNSW ICAS Science Online Test Kindergarten Orientation 2021: Information Evening (Parents only) P&C Meeting: 7.30pm NNPS Dance Concert: NSHS (Under review) UNSW ICAS Digital Technologies Online Test Kindergarten Orientation 2021: School Tour & Classroom Experience UNSW ICAS English Online Test Fathers Day Stall UNSW ICAS Mathematics Online Test UNSW ICAS Spelling Online Test Opportunity Class Placement Test P&C Meeting: 7.30pm Last Day of Term 3 PITTWATER ZONE PSSA RECOMMENCE TERM 3 WEEK 9

At present we are planning for Term 3 and the return of some regular school activities. Decisions on programs and events are made inline with the Department of Education guidelines. The success of being able to manage the transition of students back to school, and the ongoing requirements of the Covid-19 pandemic, has been the strong and collaborative support of staff, students and parents. Thank you to our teachers who have continued to show high-levels of professionalism and commitment to students. The support from the community has also been greatly appreciated. Students have also shown increased levels of independence and responsibility in these times. Please tell them how well they have been going. At the commencement of Term 3 this continued collaborative effort will be important. Most importantly we want our staff and students to be healthy and well and ready to engage in the learning opportunities ahead. ACHIEVEMENT – BANNER RECIPIENTS Congratulations to our banner recipients for the months of April and May. Students in K to 2 were recognised for their hard work and efforts at an assembly on Wednesday. Students in Years 3 to 6 will receive their banners on Friday.

STUDENT REPORTS Semester One student reports will be sent home to parents at the end of Week 2, Term 3. The modified reports will cover key outcomes of student learning and a general comment.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY – TERM 3 The start to Term 3 on Monday, 20 July is a Staff Development Day. Students will be returning to school on Tuesday, 21 July. TERM 3 – LOOKING AHEAD Please see below a brief overview of some of our school operations for the start of Term 3. DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES The drop off and pick up arrangements currently in place will remain at the start of Term 3. These procedures support the safe arrival and departure for all 750 students. It is important that parents and family members have the school app so that they receive up-to-date information. Any changes to these procedures will be communicated via the school app. Please Note: At drop off and pick up times, there has been an increasing number of parents arriving with a dog in tow. We know that for many families their pet is a much-loved member of the family group. However, please understand that other adults and children do have a level of anxiety or fear towards a dog. Please consider respecting all our students and families if you are bringing a dog to drop off or pick up. The dog must be on a leash and under the control of the owner. DROP OFF: Only students can enter the school via Namona Street or the back-oval gates from 8.30am. PICK UP: Kindergarten to Year 2 students will be walked to the back-oval gates. Years 3 to 6 can leave via Namona Street. Any child in Years 3 to 6 accompanying a younger sibling must leave via the back-oval gates. Students catching the bus meet the supervising teacher outside the music RFF room.

SCHOOL PHOTOS REMINDER School photo order envelops went home last week. School photos will be held at school on Wednesday, 5 August. Sibling photos will be taken on a different day this year. They will be on Tuesday, 11 August. If you wish to have a sibling photo of your children taken, please send your child to the office to collect a sibling photo envelope. All class photo envelops need to be handed back to the classroom teacher on the photo day or before. All sibling photo envelopes need to be returned to the office. Kim Mulkeen Assistant Principal

KINDERGARTEN 2021 SIBLINGS STARTING SCHOOL IN 2021 It is now time to start the enrolment process for our new kindergarten students for 2021. We would greatly appreciate it if you have a child starting at NNPS next year to provide details to the school office. Thank you to those families who have already provided these details.

Narrabeen North Public School, in partnership with the Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS), has teamed with the Centre for Emotional Health at Macquarie University to develop a student survey to measure emotional health. The PCS Committee has collaborated with Professor Ron Rapee to create a questionnaire that will determine whether any students in our community are struggling with issues relating to body image, anxiety, social media usage and bullying. In Week 3, Term 3, this survey will be implemented for Years 4, 5 and 6 students, and all high school students across the PCS. This is the second year in which such a comprehensive emotional health survey will take place across a large group of schools in NSW. The survey results will help our schools to better identify real issues impacting on student wellbeing and engagement. Whilst participation is voluntary, it is highly encouraged. Parental consent is essential. More detailed information will be sent home at the beginning of next term. Kim Mulkeen NNPS School Survey Manager Assistant Principal

SCHOOL ACCESS BETWEEN 9AM – 3PM If you are required to visit the school office between 9:00am and 3:00pm please enter via Namona Street. CANTEEN The canteen will be open for online recess and lunch orders. Over the counter sales at recess will also be available. SCRIPTURE/ETHICS Scripture and ethics lessons will recommence in Term 3, Week 3. Lessons will operate under the Department of Education guidelines for external visitors to the school. DRINK BOTTLES Students are advised to bring a water bottle (bubblers remain closed). SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES Schools can hold an assembly for no longer than 15 minutes. A reduced number of assemblies will be held to provide further opportunities for classroom-based learning. END OF TERM I hope that all our families can enjoy the upcoming school holidays. With the lifting of restrictions, it has been great to hear the different plans people have to spend time together. Please stay safe and well, and I look forward to everyone returning in Term 3. SCHOOL SNAPSHOT… EXTERNAL VALIDATION 2020 Every year our school undertakes self–assessment using the School Excellence Framework. The Framework is a statement of what is valued as excellence for NSW public schools, both now and into the future. By providing a clear description of high-quality practice across the three domains of Learning, Teaching and Leading, the Framework supports public schools throughout NSW in the pursuit of excellence. Each year we assess our practice against the Framework to inform our school plan and annual report leading to further improvements in the delivery of education to our students. This year as part of the self-assessment cycle we are participating in the External Validation (EV) process. During the EV process an independent panel of peer principals considers our evidence and assessment of the school's progress, aligned with the standards articulated in the Framework. Our panel date is in Term 4 on Tuesday, 3 November. The Narrabeen North EV Team is comprised of the school executive and staff representatives. The school executive are Ryan Shepheard, Tanya Russell, Maria Kortekaas, Lisa Phillips, Kim Mulkeen, Karen Reid, Michelle Dickson and Shauna Humphries. Our staff representatives include Alexis Shepherd, Kristy Harrison, Katie-Louise Clinton, Rebecca Harris and Natalie White. In Term 2 the team has been meeting regularly to prepare the body of evidence by selecting the most significant pieces of evidence to demonstrate our progress aligned to the Framework. Through annotation and analysis the team will identify how the selected pieces of evidence support the school’s self-assessment judgements across all elements of the Framework. This process includes consultation with a Principal, School Leadership to guide selection and consistency in decision-making. The Director, Educational Leadership also affirms the school’s external validation submission as being an accurate representation of the school’s planning, self-assessment and reporting processes. We will continue to provide further updates on our progress.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD) Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

year of schooling category of disability: physical, cognitive,

sensory or social/emotional level of adjustment provided: support

provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools

consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools

develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on any student and no student will be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified - the privacy and confidentiality of all students is

ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy). Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au). If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school. Thank you Kim Mulkeen Assistant Principal Learning Support Team Leader

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the best learning takes place when there is a partnership of students, teachers, parents, carers and the community. “Our schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared,” Mr Scott said. “As our lives slowly return to normal, it’s time for us to reflect on the achievements and resilience of our entire school community. We look forward to celebrating Education Week with all of you in August.”

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EDUCATION WEEK 2020

Education Week will be held from Monday, 3 August to Friday, 7 August. Education Week is our annual week of celebration to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities. This year’s theme is ‘Learning together’ and it reflects the incredible months of 2020 where NSW public school students have continued to learn and achieve, despite natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. Our schools have experienced significant disruption but our staff – in partnership with parents and carers – have worked tirelessly to ensure that high quality teaching and learning has continued for all students.

PLEASE NOTE: Whilst every attempt is made to verify bonafide advertisers, the school does not accept responsibility therefore parents should use their own discretion.
