i had to wait many long months for a chance to visit kaka. But, have you ever heard about kaka? Well, kaka is an island with a famous cave. to this cave, they say, children’s ghosts come every night to build little stone shrines at the feet of the statue of god Jizo.

But you must know that it is forbidden to go to kaka if there is wind enough ‘to move three hairs’. And believe me, an absolutely windless day is extremely rare on this wild coast. over the Japanese sea a west or north-west breeze is nearly always blowing.

today the sky is clear blue, and there is nearly no wind, barely enough to wrinkle the sea, although certainly more than enough to

between the wall of the cavern on the right and some large rocks, and discover a very narrow passage left open between the stone towers.

i am warned to be careful for the sake of the little ghosts. if any of their work be overturned, they will cry. so we move very cautiously and slowly across the cave, towards a space without stone heaps, where the rocky floor of the cave is covered with a thin layer of sand.

And in that sand i see light prints of little feet, children’s feet, tiny naked feet, only three or four inches long – the footprints of the infant ghosts.

if we had come earlier, the boatman says, we would have seen many more. At night, when the soil of the cavern is moist with dew, the little ghosts leave their footprints upon it; but when the heat of the day comes, and the sand dries up, the prints of the little feet vanish away.

There are only three footprints visible, but these are very distinct. one footprint points toward the wall of the cavern; the others point toward the sea.

Here and there, on ledges or rocks, all around the cavern, tiny straw sandals – children’s sandals – are lying. They are offerings of pilgrims to the little ghosts, that their feet may not be wounded by the stones.

But the ghostly footprints are prints of bare feet.

Then we advance, very carefully, between the stone towers, toward the mouth of the inner grotto, and reach the statue of Jizo before it. A seated Jizo carved in granite rock, holding in one hand the jewel by virtue of which all wishes may be fulfilled; in the other hand his pilgrim’s staff.

Jizo is one of the most beautiful and tender figures in Japanese popular faith. That compassionate divinity cares for the souls of

the sea, although certainly more than enough to ‘move three hairs’. still, the old boatman does not seem anxious, so i decide to stay calm, too.

The transparent water looks so inviting, that before we left the bay i plunged in and swam after the boat. When i climb back on board we were passing the coast on the right, and the little boat began to rock. even under this little wind the sea is moving in long swells.

As we sail into the open sea, our boat is gliding over an ink-black depth, in front of one of the grimmest coasts i have ever seen.

At last we arrive at a bay – a beautiful, large bay, with soft green hills, and high mountains on the horizon. At the furthest point of the bay there is a miniature village: kaka-Ura.

But we don’t go to kaka-Ura yet; the ghosts are not there. We cross the bay, sail

But as i am on the point of jumping in, the boatman utters wild cries of protest.

‘no!’ he shouts. ‘it is certain death, sir! Men who jumped in here only six months ago were never heard of again! This is sacred water, Kami-no-umi! you cannot swim here, sir! you would offend the spirits and they would punish you severely for it!’

And he grabs again his little stone and raps fearfully upon the side of the boat.

After a while, seeing that i am not sufficiently scared by these stories of sudden deaths and disappearances, the boatman suddenly screams into my ear the magical word,

‘SAME! sHARks!’

Sharks! I have no longer any desire whatever to swim through the many halls of shin-kukedo-san. i have lived in the tropics!
