Three girls (aged 2–8 years) with partial-onset epilepsyexperienced an exacerbation of their seizures after startingoxcarbazepine [dosages and durations of therapy beforereaction not stated].
Patient 1 developed staring spells with up-rolling of eyesand eyelid fluttering and became unresponsive afterstarting oxcarbazepine. She also experienced loss of toneresulting in a fall during some episodes. Generalised spikeand wave activity was evident on an ictal EEG.Oxcarbazepine was discontinued and her epilepsy wasmanaged with ethosuximide.
After initiation of oxcarbazepine, patient 2 experiencedan increase in seizure frequency and developed significantbehavioural problems. An interictal EEG showed frequentindependent and bilateral centro-temporal spike-waveactivity during sleep. Oxcarbazepine was discontinued andshe became seizure free under levetiracetam therapy.
Patient 3 experienced a marked increase in seizurefrequency (increasing to several per day) after startingoxcarbazepine. Generalised spike-wave activity wasevident on an ictal EEG.
