English TranslationT it le : The lady and her two daughters Author: Judy Galmur I llu s tra to r : Ivor BrownOnce there was a woman who lived with her daughter and baby, in a cave. One day, they ran out of food and so the young g i r l got the ir carrying dish, th e ir yamstick, and they went out bush to look for yams. The mother carried the baby in the baby-carrying dish. The young g i r l said to her mother, "Let's go in to the scrub." They both went in , and the young g ir l started digging up the yams and put them in to the wooden dish. Then they went further on, but they became very th irs ty . The mother said to her daughter, "Wait here and mind your l i t t l e s is te r." Off she went with her wooden dish and she walked u n til she came to some water. She swam f i r s t , and then got some water to take back to her daughter. The young g ir l had a drink and then they went back to the cave. When they got back, the young g i r l got some f ire wood and dry grass and made a f ire . Then she started sorting the yams and then put the others back in the dish for them to eat another day. After they ate the yams, they had a drink fo sugar bag.Later, the mother went to sleep while her daughter kept watch. Well, there was a w ild man out hunting too. When he went down to the rive r fo r a drink of water, he found the tracks belonging to the old lady. He was rea lly happy and decided that he wanted to k i l l the old lady. He kept his eye on the tracks, and followed them a l l the way. He followed u n til he came out at the cave. The young g ir l suddenly fe lt very frightened. She heard a white cockatoo sing out a warning and so she quickly went and woke her mother. The old lady woke up and they began to watch the road. Then they saw the man coming with his spears. The mother said to her daughter, "My g i r l , don't make any noise."They were both rea lly frightened because they were alone. The old lady's husband had passed away a long time before. But the man d idn 't see them, and so he kept going. The two of them were rea lly happy.
