Selkirk College Presents Canadian Jazz Innovator Elizabeth Shepherd Montreal-based jazz musician Elizabeth Shepherd will
be kicking off her latest tour at Nelson’s Shambhala Music & Performance Hall where she will be joined on stage by Selkirk College students.
Te velvety-voiced pianist arrived on the international scene in 2006 when her debut album Start To Move was
voted one of the top jazz albums of the year by the listen- ers of the inuential Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio Worldwide. Since then, the soul-jazz innovator has estab- lished herself as one of the most alluring and imaginative artists on the scene today.
Shepherd will be in Nelson on November 16 where she will be giving a pair of clinics for students in the Selkirk College Contemporary Music & echnology Program and in the evening take the stage at the venue on enth
Street Campus. “Having Elizabeth come to connect and pass on her
knowledge to students is tremendous,” says music program instructor Laura Landsberg. “We’re very pleased to have her then kick off a tour of British Columbia in Nelson. Tis is a great opportunity for all music lovers to see her in the intimate setting of the Shambhala Music & Performance Hall.”
Shepherd has been hailed as “a jazz virtuoso blessed with a pop sensibility.” She has been praised by critics worldwide for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery. Te four time Juno Award nominee and two time Polaris long list artist is fresh off the heels of headlining tours in Mexico and Eastern Canada. She will be performing songs from her acclaimed new album Te Signal , which features contribu- tions from Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock).
Joining Shepherd on her tour of British Columbia is gui- tar wizard and longtime collaborator, Michael Occhipinti. Scott Kemp on bass, John Day on trumpet, and local favou- rite ony Ferraro on drums. For the Nelson performance, second year Selkirk College vocal major students will join Shepherd on stage.
“It will be quite a thrill for our voice students to be on the stage that night, but all students will benet from her clinics in the day,” says Landsberg. “Tis type of interaction with touring musicians is extremely valuable for our students.”

Recycling Donations To Kootenay Lake Hospital
Te Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre presented representa- tives from the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $3,500. o date, the program has contributed over $46,000 to the KLH Foundation’s fundraising efforts. Donations represent prots from beverage containers col- lected at the Lakeside Drive Recycling Depot (formerly the Nelson ransfer Station).

Area F and Chair of the Committee. “Tis ongoing part- nership between the Nelson Leafs and the RDCK contin- ues to provide a meaningful benet to the community.”
Te RDCK and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Center have partnered in the beverage container recycling program at the Nelson ransfer Station since 2010. Recycling bins provide residents with a convenient place to recycle refundable beverage containers while knowing that the prots from their donations are beneting the community directly.
“Not only are we contributing to improving the services
of our local hospital, but we are also making beverage container recycling accessible, thus keeping recyclable materials out of the landll,” stated Uli Wolf, General Manager of Environmental Services for the RDCK.
All refundable beverage containers are accepted in the bins at the Lakeside Drive Recycling Depot - sorting is not required! Residents must place individual containers into the bins; no bulk loads are accepted. Large volumes of containers are accepted at the Recycling Centre (Bottle Depot) located at 120 Silica Street, Nelson.
In BC, approximately one billion beverage containersare recycled each year. Recycling saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and relieves pressure on non- renewable resources. This part time position, with exible work hours, is 24 hours per week; salary commensurate with education and experience.
