From the Acting PrincipalDear Parents and Caregivers,

Research shows that attendance and punctuality at school leads to improved learning outcomes for children.

Lessons start at 8:45 am. Students who enter the school grounds at 8:30 am are able to either play quietly on the COLA or sit near their

classrooms until their classrooms are open. Classrooms are generally opened at approximately 8:30 am for students to enter and organise

themselves for the day. During this time parents may support their child/ren with their organisation, but it is important that your child takes

responsibility for these processes.

This is an extremely busy time of the day and teachers are often unavailable to meet with you and discuss matters, if you have something to

discuss with your child’s teacher please make a time via the Front Oce or by writing a note in their diary or communication book.

Routines and schedules are important for us all to make sure we make the most of every minute we have during the day to maximise learning for

all students, please ensure you leave the classroom once the 8:45 am bell sounds and if you have something to bring to your child or information

that needs to be passed onto the teacher please do so via the Front Oce.

We know at times it is necessary to make appointments during the school day, if this is the case please communicate this to your child’s teacher

via the communication book, diary, telephoning, leaving a message or coming into the Front Oce. The phone is available 24/7 for you to leave a

message or send an email if that is easier.

Page 2: N ewsl et t er T h i el e Pr i ma r y Sch ool · Pa r e n t s a r e a l s o r e q u i r e d t o c omp l e t e a f or m f or a n y e xt e n d e d l e a ve f r om s c h ool f or h ol

Parents are also required to complete a form for any extended leave from school for holidays or other reasons. This form is available via the Front

Oce and can be emailed to you or collected in person.

Students who are not in class by the time the class roll is called and the school has not received a message for their absence will be marked as

absent, if they arrive at school after the roll is called they will be marked as late. A text message will be sent to parents if children are not at school

and we have not been notied. This ensures safety for all and indicates that we value our student’s attendance and punctuality.

Let’s work together to ensure we achieve this goal for all students so that we help them to develop these important organisation skills. After all, it

takes a village to raise a child!

Kind Regards,

Sharon Willoughby

Acting Principal

Are your children staying safe?Recently there have been a number of online and cyber-safety issues aecting our older

students and some of these have warranted discussions at a whole cohort level. While our

systems at school have high quality ltering and reasonable protections, the same cannot be

said for some of the students’ personal devices. Many of our older students have access to

online applications and tools which have age limits beyond their years; Instagram, Snapchat in

particular are both limited to people over 13 years.

InstagramInformation

https://www.esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/games-apps-and-social-networking/instagram

SnapchatInformation

https://www.esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/games-apps-and-social-networking/snapchat

General information about supporting your child as they navigate in the world of Social Media

can be found on the e-Safety Commissioner’s homepage https://www.esafety.gov.au/ where

there are resources for parents, students and schools.

This is also the portal where issues can be reported as they arise and where specic help can

be sought if more challenging problems arise.

The eSafety Commissioner is currently rebranding and launching a new campaign which will hit

media shortly called Start the Chat. This campaign encourages parents to visit esafety.gov.au

for how to approach online safety with 5-18 year olds.

Many experts advise that devices should only be used in shared spaces by pre-teens. Best

advice also recommends that devices be placed in a secure place overnight so that all

household members access quality sleep. Open communication to support the young person

both at school and home, along with written agreements can be eective.

We are all looking forward to the Parent Cyber-safety session early next term but in the

meantime utilise the resources you have available to you by keeping communication channels

open with your young adolescent, remembering to keep us ‘in the loop’ if you are concerned,

and by working together to raise the respectful students we know our children to be who act

with integrity.

SPARK Excursion to the Adelaide Superloop 500The Superloop 500, previously known as the Adelaide 500 or the Clipsal 500, is a racing event

held in Adelaide from the 28th of February to the 3rd of March. All of the SPARK students (Jake

P, Jayson R, Kodi R, Oscar K, Danilo Z, Cooper F, Zach C, Bethany K, Emily B, Alexa R, Isabella M

and Soraya T) attended the Superloop on Thursday the 28th of February for the in-schools

program.

Visiting the Superloop provided students with a context for their research project this semester,

embracing on and o track excitement as well as an opportunity to see how various aspects of

Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematics are all integrated within the wide world of

motorsports.

Students followed a pit-stop path around the track, participating in 10 dierent educational

opportunities. They were able to:

·         experience the cars, food and culture from ve of the world’s most famous racing tracks

·         join in on an action-packed Nerf obstacle course, testing accuracy, ability and agility

·         take on the role of their favourite drivers in some racing simulators

·         have a go at working in the pit stops with a smaller scaled car, changing the tyres in a

particular time limit

·         get right up close to various car series such as the Audi Sport R8, Dunlop Super 2 series

and meet some of the drivers

·         watch a Freestyle Moto X team deliver a show with dare-devil stunts o of a 24m ramp

·         observe the Moto X step up competition (high-jump for Moto X riders) where some of the

biggest Moto X riders attempted to jump a bar as high as 17 metres

·         explore the latest high-tech equipment of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and some of

the most popular displays

Overall despite the heat, all the students had an amazing day lled with lots of adrenalin,

excitement, curiosity and other captivating experiences that really enthralled the entire crowd.

We look forward to using this learning to drive our research project this term. Please see some

photos from the day below.

Parent / Teacher InterviewsParent Teacher interviews will be held between Monday 18th March – Friday 29th March, 2019.

As this will be our rst formal opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, it is our expectation

that all parents make it a priority to attend.  This year we are introducing a new on-line booking

system through www.schoolinterviews.com.au  We believe that this process will make booking

interviews with your child’s teacher easier especially if you have a number of teachers you wish

to see.  Interviews are strictly 15 minutes and spaces are limited.  Also, please ensure that

bookings are made at least 24 hours in advance of the time you have requested.  This also

applies if you wish to cancel or change an appointment.

If you require more time, please contact the teacher directly to make an alternative

arrangement.

Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code and follow these simple instructions.

The event code 9y9fe

When you click FINISH, your interview timetable will be emailed to you automatically.  If you do

not receive your email immediately – check your junk email folder AND make sure you have

spelled your email address correctly.

You can return to www.schoolinterviews.com.au at any time and change your interview times -

until the bookings close on Wednesday 20th March.

What if you do not have internet access?

For parents who do not have internet access, they may ring the school on 8270 4222 and make a

time over the phone or email the school with options for interview times.

NAPLAN Online -privacy collection noticeNAPLAN Online -privacy collection notice Moving to NAPLAN Online in 2019 or 2020. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

(NAPLAN) takes place each year for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN helps

parents, carers and educators to see if children are meeting important numeracy and literacy standards. The move to NAPLAN Online started in

2018. Moving online means NAPLAN is transitioning from paper-based tests to computer-based assessments. The aim is for schools to transition

to online testing by 2020. Online testing brings many benets and opportunities including providing better assessment, more precise results and

faster turnaround of information.More information on NAPLAN Online is available at www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support/ Readiness

testing activities A critical step in preparing for NAPLAN online is schools’ participation in readiness testing activities. The purpose of readiness

testing activities is to ensure your child is familiar with their device and the online test environment, as well as to test school and national

infrastructure systems and processes.Readiness testing is not another NAPLAN and will not formally assess students who participate in the test.

Any reports generated will be used for testing purposes only. Readiness testing activities may involve students who are participating in NAPLAN in

2019 or will participate in 2020. Collection of personal information. Schools are required by law to collect personal information about you and your

child, irrespective of whether your child participates in NAPLAN testing. The purpose of this notice is to advise parents and carers of how your

child’s personal information will be used for NAPLAN Online in 2019, and as part of readiness activities scheduled at various times leading up to

the test in May 2019 and May 2020.

part of readiness activities scheduled at various times leading up to the test in May 2019 and May 2020.

Disclosure of personal information

For every student participating in readiness activities and online testing, the following personal information will be uploaded by the Department
