I have been the editor in chief of this Kiwaniscope for over 3 years now… wow, how me flies. If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I actually don’t write too many arcles. I leave that to the more experienced and knowledgeable Ki- wanians. Even if there is an arcle, it was never in editorial form, but I had to break away from the norm for this one because I aended an event this past weekend that I had to tell you about. So if you would bare with me for a few minutes and let me walk you through it. It was a Saturday night during Easter weekend. I had just returned from the park with my so adorable 15 month year old baby girl. I was rushing to get ready for yet another Kiwanis event. My daughter being the mommy’s girl that she is, was blocking the door pre- venng me from leaving. She was on the verge of crying because she didn’t want me to leave. My husband even said, just don’t go, stay with us. I admit that at that moment I did think, “Well… Dave and Mahmood would be there, they probably don’t need me.” A thought I’m sure many of us have been guilty of once or twice. But I decided I made a promise and was going to fol- low through. The event that evening was the Key Club Division 35 End of Year Banquet. It only took about 20 minutes at the event for me to be so glad that I went. Listening to the seniors give tear filled speeches about their experience in Key Club reminded me of how much I cher- ished my me with KIWIN’S. Listening to them thank each other for being there for each other, for being their family, their support system, their inspiraon really reminded me of why I pour so many of my hours into a ser- vice organizaon. Every speech always thanked Kiwanis for giving them the opportunity to serve. These “kids” as we call them were so smart, eloquent, appreciave, kind, and grown up. When we spend many of our hours looking at budgets, planning events, and doing paper work, it’s easy to for- get why we do what we do. But this event really reminded me that my high school experience wouldn’t have been complete if it wasn’t for Kiwanis. We, as Kiwanians, give students the oppor- tunity to develop leadership, organiza- onal, public speaking, responsibility, and teamwork skills that are so valua- ble in the real world. We help create memories that they will cherish forev- er. So why does Dave aend so many events? Why does Mahmmod take on the dues of LTG? You will never find the answers if you just join Kiwanis, pay the dues and aend a meeng or two. But, you will understand when you see it in the face of a crying senior, or in the face of a child who just got a pair of shoes, or even in the face of a grateful parent who tells you this is the first me she has seen her child find a place they belong. Believe it or not, we are not in the business of sending out bills, selling ckets, or even cooking pancakes, we are in the business of IMPROVING LIVES!! So if you haven’t this year yet, find the me aend an SLP event! Aend a convenon, Key Leader weekend, or end of year ban- quet. Interclub with Duarte Kiwanis

On March 31st, 2015, Hacienda Heights Kiwanis had an interclub with the Duarte Kiwanis. In attend-ance from Hacienda Heights Kiwanis was President Victoria Davidson, Dave Wallach, Kathy Young, Anna Wu and her 15 month old daughter Kyra Wu Lee. Anna was the program for the afternoon and spoke about The Eliminate Project. Kyra, Anna’s daughter was her prop for her speech about Project Eliminate. Anna shared why Project Eliminate was so personal to her and some fundraising ideas. The meeting was really fun and everyone from Hacienda Heights really enjoyed visiting Duarte. It was really impressive how the meeting ended so on time. Hope to see you at the next Interclub!!

Story by David Malkin Our guest speaker this week was Kevin D. George, Home-less Veteran Search & Rescue also know as Vet Hunters Project. The Vet Hunters Project is a non-profit that was founded by Joe Leal, an Iraq combat veteran and tireless advocate for America’s homeless heroes. Together, with a dedicat-ed and determined army of Vet Hunters, Leal is shedding light on a population that oftentimes tries to remain hid-den while changing the lives of hundreds of underserved and neglected veterans across the country. They are a grass roots movement that is not govern-ment funded allowing them to meet the needs of veterans quickly. As they say, no red tape. Vet Hunters has been compared to “E-Harmony” of Homelessness. They connect the homeless per-son to resources by bringing them to where the homeless veterans live. Their offices are on the streets and anywhere a homeless veteran may call home. They take the word homeless away from the veteran through action. If the homeless veteran lives under a bridge, they will do everything possible to bring the homeless heroes back “home”. Vet Hunters are there if the veteran needs a car, medical treatment, funding, a hotel room, or any other type of assistance. On a daily bases Vet Hunters Project conduct: Daily search and rescue missions. Establish maps and counts of homeless veterans and their villages. Continue networking with the entire community of veteran service organizations, homeless coa-

lition partners, law enforcement, school staff and military leaders. Continue to provide housing, resources, and anything to help set up homes veterans in estab-

lished homes. Establish “CREDIT” with the veterans:

A. Commitment to the veteran & community B. Respect toward veterans and families C. Excellence in delivery of programs D. Dignity towards others E. Integrity in operations F. Trust

If you would like to help Vet Hunters Project, go to their web site at:

www.vethunters.org and click on “contact us”. At the bottom there will be a “donate” logo.

By Lon Salgren Spring fever struck AAH this month. We had a fairly light turnout of our sponsored youth. Obviously there were a LOT of other fun things to do besides Adopt-a-Highway on a nice Spring Saturday in early April. In attendance were Kiwanis Club Members Lon Salgren, Mahmood Bashir, Honorary Member Ted Strinz, Grace Chan, President Victoria Da-vidson and Dave Wallach. Glen A Wil-son Key Club was represented by Dylan Tran, Cameron Joh, Sabastian Dellgado, Ken Wu, Priscilla Cahy-ono, Fellicia Kuo and Joshua Tong. Rowland High School Key Club was represented by Samson Hui, Lawrence Chan, Yuan Feng, Jessie Chan, Joy Lin, Samantha Cao and March Suayangam. I took an informal poll as we gathered for the safety talk before we begin of how many have been to an AAH previously. Only roughly 20% raised their hands. The remaining either did not hear the ques-tion or were new to our monthly community service project.

As we prepared to go I overheard Ted Strinz mention that he had begun the event about a half hour prior by collecting a bag of trash primarily filled with broken glass from the parking lot. I glanced over and saw a small bag of trash beside the concrete light pole where we put the trash when done. Thanks Ted! As usual we count the number of cigarette butts we collect dur-ing AAH. The group I took to Azusa consisted of 3 Key Clubbers from Glen A Wilson. We collected 542 butts. The Key Clubbers from Rowland High School collected 310 butts. Mahmood will contribute a penny a butt to each club. The weather seemed warmer than the 83 degrees that my van indicated as we drove back to the base camp. I pointed to the Key Clubbers the leaves on the deciduous trees along the south side of Colima and explained to the Key Clubbers my logic in

Those leaves were absent and missed just a cou-ple of months ago when it was unseasonable warm. We did get a few honks from cars and personal thanks from pedes-trians along our route as we cleaned up Colima Road. Thank you to all the youth and adult volunteers that came out to help clean up our community. We are predicted to have rain today. There will be a lot less trash flowing through our storm drains to the beach as a result.
