    In Kurukshetra, near Delhi, in Haryana

    State of India, there is a large battle ground,

    where some more than 4000 years BCE, a

    bloody battle was fought between cousins.

    This fierce and extremely ferocious battle

    lasted for 18 days and is famously known as

    the Battle of Mahabharata. The story of this

    battle in details is recorded in the greatest

    epic of the world, with the same name. It

    took the lives of 18 AKSHOHINI forces(One

    Akshohini consists of 21,870 chariots, each

    employing one charioteer, and one warrior

    and two helpers for its wheels, 21,870elephants, 65,610 cavalry and 1,09,350

    infantrymen. Please refer to Mahabharata

    Adi Parva 2/23-26). In all a minimum of 56,

    31,240 persons died in the battle in just 18

    days. Besides a minimum of a quarter million

    elephants and 1.2 million horses were also

    killed. I invite you to a journey to explore,

    why the famous battle (of Mahabharata)

    became necessary.

    Once upon a time, there was a King named

    Vichitravirya. He had two sons

    Dhritarashtra and Pandu (Kindly refer to the

    Genealogy of the Kurus and Pandus

    elsewhere in this compilation). Pandu was

    younger of the two. Dhritarashtra being

    blind by birth, the younger son Pandu

    inherited the kingdom. Pandu had five sons

    from his two queens; Yudhistar, Bhima and

    Arjut from the elder queen Kunti and Nakul

    and Sehdev from the younger queen Madri.

    All the five had inseparable love among

    them. On the other hand, Dhritarashtra had

    one hundred sons and a daughter named

    Dushshala from his queen Gandhari. They

    were known as Kaurava brothers. Among

    the Kaurav brothers, Duryodhana was eldest

    of all. Among the rest of Kauravas, Dush-shashan is worth mentioning. He was very

    powerful, but was also wicked like other

    Kauravas. After Pandus death, the Pandavas

    were natural heirs to the throne, but they

    were very young, so Dhritarashtra inherited

    the kingdom. Later the Kuru State was

    divided into two parts and Pandavas were

    given the Khandav Prastha, which was a

    dense forest area. The Pandavas cleared the

    forest and established their own kingdom at

    the place, and named it Indrapastha. But

    Duryodhana wanted to usurp their share too,

    and played many tricks on Pandavas to get

    the Indrapastha back to Kuru Kingdom. At

    last, through the deceitful gambling, he hadall the Pandavas shares and sent them to

    exile for 12 years and one year of secret exile,

    where if located, they will again go for exile

    for another 12 years. Pandavas lived through

    the exile and on return demanded their share

    of the kingdom, which the deceitful gamling

    had taken from them. When everybody,

    including Lord Krishna, failed to impress

    upon Duryodhana to return the kingdom, the

    war became imminent. Duryodhana

    declared that without war, he wound not

    part land even equal to the tip of a needle,

    and adamant as he was, he even wanted to

    imprison Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna then

    revealed His divine self in the Kaurava

    Assembly. His divine image was so intense

    and powerful that all Kauravas fainted,

    except Mahatma Bhishma and Kaurava

    Minister named Vidur. Vidur was a saintlyfigure and was in fact brother of

    Dhritarashtra and Pandu. He was however

    not given a share from the kingdom because

    he was born of a maid in the palace of

    Vichitravirya. Vidur was a very learned

    personality. His teachings are contained in

    the great epic Mahabharata and are famous

    by the name VIDUR NITI. Lord Krishna

    went straight from the assembly of Kuravas

    to Vidhurs house and accepted hishospitality. Vidur loved Pandavas and played

    a great and invaluable role in saving the life

    of Pandavas on many occasions, including on

    the occasion, when at attempt was made on

    their lives during their stay in VARNAVAT

    at a palace, which later came to called

    LAKSHAGRAHA.

    (Under a conspiracy hatched by Duryodhana and

    Shakuni, the Pandavas brothers and their mother

    Kunti were sent to Varnavat. A special palace

    was made for their stay. The palace was made of

    highly inflammable goods like purified butter,

    cloth, sealing wax, wax, dry grass etc. Saintly

    figure VIDURA came to know of this conspiracy,

    well in time and warned the Pandavas to be

    careful during their stay at Varnavat. Some time

    After many attempts to bring peace among

    the two groups of Pandavas and Kauravas,

    Duryodhana did not heed to good advice and

    it was decided to wage a war against him.

    Both the forces came face tof ace with each

    other in the battle ground of

    KURUKSHETRA, near Delhi in Haryanastate of India. Just before war, Arjuna

    deemed it prudent to look at the persons with

    whom he would be fighting. Lord Krishna

    had consented to be his charioteer out of His

    love for Arjuna. Arjuna asked Him to

    position his chariot in the middle of the

    battle ground so that he could see all. Just as

    his chariot was positioned there, he saw his

    relatives, brothers, teachers and all those

    whom he loved, arrayed against Pandavas.

    Looking at them he was overcome with

    infinite compassion for all of them. He was

    full of grief for them. Laden with grief, he

    threw his famous Bow, named Gandiva, and

    Arrows in the back of his chariot and

    declared that he would not fight the war. He

    began to think whether he should kill all his

    relatives in war or not fight the war so that

    peace could be established. This dilemma ofArjuna was handled by Lord Krishna

    appropriately and whatever divine dialogue

    transpired between the two is today available

    to us in the form of GITA, as an important

    part of epic Mahabharata. This dialogue is

    stored in the book named BHISHMA, from

    chapters 25 to 42 in 18 parts. The Arjunas

    depression was dissipated by Lord Krishna.

    In the following pages, we shall read the

    divine dialogue in simple language. We shallread how Lord Krishna sorted the grievances

    of Arjuna. As the dialogue unfolds, we shall

    also see the VISHWA and VIRAT ROOP

    (universal and unlimited attributes) of Lord

    Krishna. We are blessed to have been born

    in this age, because these images of Lord

    Krishna were not seen earlier by any one.

    Lord also makes a promise here that

    whosoever turns to Him only once, shall be

    resurrected by Him, come what may.

    GITA in 18th century, when in November

    1784 Charles Wilkins translated first Sanskrit

    Book and chose Gita for the translation.

    Hari Om,Tat Sat. Hari is an epithet of God.

    Om, Tat and Sat have been declared as the

    threefold appellation of the Absolute, who is

    Truth, Consiciousness and Bliss solidified. By

    that were the Brahmanas and the Vedas as

    well as sacrifices created at the cosmic dawn.Therefore, acts of sacrifice, charity and

    austerity as enjoined by sacred precepts are

    always commenced by noble souls given to

    the recitation of Vedic chants with utterance

    of the divine name OM (). With the idea

    that al this belongs to God, who is denoted by

    the appellation TAT, acts of sacrifice and

    austerity as well as acts of charity of various

    kinds are performed by the seekers ofblessedness expecting no return for them.

    The name of God, SAT, is employed in the

    sense of truth and goodness. And the word

    SAT is also used in the sense of a

    praiseworthy act, O Arjuna. And

    steadfastness in sacrifice, austerity and

    charity is likewise spoken of as SAT and

    action for the sake of God is verily termed as

    Gita perpetuates the principle of universal truth.

    Its message is universal, is serious and is beyond

    any ism, while it also establishes the principle of

    trinity as contained in Sanatana Dharma, which

    in brief can also be called Hindutva. It is simple

    to understand Gita if it is accepted with an open

    heart and matured mind. The underlying deep

    meaning of Gita can also be understood easily if

    it is accepted with full faith and devotion.

    Gita is an utmost pious book and handles the

    deep lying principles of mysticism. It gives us

    self knowledge and tells us about ourselves and

    how can we lead a blissful life in this world full

    of dualities. It is an important treatise on Yoga

    which, if followed diligently, can improve ourcharacter and mystical life. Mahatma Gandhi

    has termed Gita as the sum total of all vedic

    teachings, the knowledge of which can fulfil all

    which not only provides us deep inner sight but

    also is the standard of all religions in all times.

    Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan has, in his

    commentary on Gita, called it Authoritative

    Knowledge and the Science of Morality.

    Anandgiri in his commentary on commentary

    by Shankaracharya on Gita has said that

    knowledge alone or Karma alone can not lead usto spiritual salvation, but a practice of both of

    them together can certainly lead us to our

    supreme objective in life.

    We know that Gita is what Arjuna was told by

    Lord Krishna when he averred his duties.

    Pandavas never wanted war, because war means

    avoidable blood bath and huge losses. We alsoknow that non-violence is one of the first

    principles of Hinduism. Hidus consider all living

    beings, be them humans or animals, worth

    worship. Gita dialogue was not rendered in a

    temple or secluded jungles or on the top of a

    mountain, but just before the war was about to

    start. This dialogue is a part of Mahabharata the

    epic. Through Gita message, Lord Krishna

    readied Arjuna, who had renounced war, to

    fight back. Here lies the opposite of Hindusprinciple of non-violence, but in the light of the

    circumstances leading to Mahabharata war,

    renouncing war at this point was nothing but

    cowardice. Gita gives us this message that

    depending upon the circumstances, one must do

    its lawful duty, which is not only righteous but

    also justified as per Dharma.

    If we look at the Arjunas dilemma closely we

    would find that his dilemma is the dilemma of

    all of us. Human beings come across such

    situations in our daily lives more often than not.

    Yes, the dilemma of Arjuna was great he had

    to decide whether to kill his relatives, including

    his grandfathers, teachers, friends and other

    relatives, or run away from war (like a coward).

    In all the 700 verses of Gita, Lord advises his

    devotee Arjua to find out his duty and do

    that, especially in such difficult situations. This

    message of Gita was narrated to KingDhritarashtra by his charioteer Sanjay, who was

    given divine eyes by Veda Vyasa (divine eyes

    means that Sanjay had been bestowed with

    power to know each and every event happening

    at the war-zone Kurukshetra, be it uttered or

    even thought of by any of the participants). The

    The 18 Chapters of Gita can be divided in three

    broad categories of 6 chapters each. In the first

    six chapters The Lord Krishna has described the

    circumstances, in which a person can

    understand Him. From Chapters 7 to 12 The

    Lord has talked about the relation of a person

    with Him in the context of his worshipping Him

    and in the context of His divine image. We shallknow how Lord is superior to us and how we are

    under his command and are suffering because of

    our foolishness. When due to good deeds, a

    person is enlightened, he tries to worship or

    know God in either a great misery, or for want

    of wealth, or in an effort to know about Him or

    seeker of knowledge of God. The last six

    chapters tell us about the relation of a person

    with nature and finally resurrection of the soul

    by Lord after it performs Karma Yagna etcdifferent forms of worship of God. This body is

    the field where we rope in the seeds of our

    deeds and harvest them accordingly. One who

    knows this fact is a knower. Chandogyupnishad

    says You are That. The first six chapters of

    Gita explain the YOU within you, the middle six

    THAT You within you, and the last six explain

    that which is ARE, meaning thereby that a

    being is in fact the Supreme Being, in great

    details, while highlighting the path ofknowledge.

    Arjun spoke to Lord Krishna with a very

    heavy heart, O Lord, it is better to live on

    alms in this world than slaying our noble

    elders, because even after killing them in war

    we shall after all enjoy only blood stained

    pleasures in the form of wealth and sense

    enjoyments. We do not even know whetherwe shall win or whether they will conquer

    us. The Lord said, Arjun, laying off arms at

    this moment does not fit your stature and

    you will be termed as a coward. You grieve

    over those who should not be grieved for

    (and yet you speak like a learned person).

    Now, if you refuse to fight this righteous war,

    then, shirking your duty and losing your

    reputation, you will incur sin. The people

    will pour undying infamy on you and will

    despise you thinking that it was fear which

    drove you off from the battle. If you are

    grieving over their bodies, you must know

    that bodies do not live for ever. If you

    consider them as Souls, you must also know

    that a soul is immortal and is indestructible.

    In fact a soul is my own image so is unborn,

    is eternal, is changeless and ever-Itself. The

    soul is not killed when the body is killed.Weapns can not cut the soul, fire can not

    burn it, water can not wet it and wind can

    not dry it. The Soul is eternal, all pervading,

    changeless, immovable, indescribable,

    unmanifested, unthinkable and

    uncorruptible. Just as a person casts off his

    worn out robes and puts on others which are

    new, similarly the Soul also discards the

    worn out bodies and enters into others which

    are new. Death is certain for all who areborn and for all who die, re-birth is certain.

    This is absolute truth and inevitable, and

    therefore you should not grieve over this fact

    and should rather pray for the departing

    souls. If you consider that all worldly bodies

    are regularly born and die, then it should not

    be a matter of grievance for you.

    bigger duty than to fight a war for the sake of

    preserving the good values and nothing is as

    great as this. This war has come to you

    unsought and it will open the gate of heaven

    for you. You should rather feel lucky to have

    got this chance. Only selected few can enter

    heaven in this manner. It is better to fight a

    war to establish good and righteous valuesthan to get wealth. If you die in war you

    shall be in heavens and if you win the war,

    you shall enjoy a kingdom. But if you refuse

    to engage in this righteous war, you shall be

    running away from your legitimate duties

    and will incur sin. People will always hold

    you in disrepute and that would be worse

    than dying. So, O Arjuna, fight with

    resolution, without considering any painor pleasure, loss or gain or even conquest

    or defeat in the war. Just fight the war

    for the sake of fighting the war as your

    duty with single, one pointed

    determination. Doing this would not

    incur you any sin, because doing ones

    natural duties does not incur any sin on

    the person. O Arjuna you should not

    waver. You should not act unwisely andhave attachment to pleasures, desires and

    worldly possessions. Having excessive

    attachment to enjoyments prevents you

    from knowing God. O Arjuna become free

    from the three Gunas i.e. Modes of Nature(Sattva Guna i.e. Equilibrium, Rajas Guna i.e.

    Attraction, and Tamas Guna, i.e. Inertia. These

    modes have also been described as Goodness,

    Passion and Ignorance) described in Vedasand

    establish yourself in Me. Your right is onlyin doing the work allotted to you and not

    in the fruits thereof. Sacrifice the fruits

    of your actions in all situations,

    abandoning attachment and remaining

    unconcerned as regards success or failure,

    vice and virtue just do your duty. This

    evenness of mind is Yoga. When your

    intellect crosses beyond this illusion, then

    you shall attain indifference and you shall

    attain inner sight, steady wisdom and self

    realization, and will reach a state which is

    beyond all evil.

    Arjuna a man of steady wisdom casts off all

    worldly desires of the mind and is satisfied in

    the self alone by the self. His mind is not

    shaken by adversity and he does not hanker

    after happiness. He has become free from

    affection, fear and wrath. He is unattached at

    all places and is neither pleased at receiving

    good nor vexed at receiving evil, his wisdomis fixed. He does not praise or blame. He

    completely withdraws his senses from their

    objects, just as a tortoise withdraws his limbs.

    A person of steady wisdom has controlled

    his senses and sits focused on Me as

    Supreme. If one constantly thinks of

    objects of pleasure, attachment is formed

    and then longing and then anger. From

    anger comes delusion, and then loss ofmemory and all discrimination is ruined,

    which ultimately perishes the person.

    But the self controlled man moving

    among objects with senses under restraint

    and free from attraction and aversion,

    attains tranquility and all sorrow is

    destroyed. His intellect is then firmly

    established. A wandering mind carries

    away discrimination like wind. A personwho is living devoid of longing, and has

    abandoned all desires without the sense of

    I and Mine attains peace. This is to

    have ones being in Brahman. (The nectar of

    the Krishna name reciting only can rid us of

    all these vices, so the seeker should depend

    on Krishna and worship HIM)

    Gist of the Chapter- Everyone must engage in some sort of activity in this material world. Butactions can either bind one to this world or liberate one from it. By acting for the pleasure of the

    Supreme, without selfish motives, one can be liberated from the law of karma (action and reaction) and

    So, O Arjuna, you should perform obligatory

    actions and keep your senses of desires under

    control through your intellect. Know that

    action is superior to inaction and even the

    bare maintenance of the body would not be

    possible if one is inactive. (But) if one does

    the work or duty only for himself, he is

    bound by the fruits of his actions. It is the

    work alone, which keeps the wheels of the

    world going. One who does not contribute

    to this scheme of the world, is useless and

    incurs sin. Such a sinful person lives life in

    vain. The person who is devoted to the Self

    and is satisfied with the Self, and content in

    the Self alone, such knowledgeable person

    has no obligatory duty, because such a person

    is not dependent on any one else, except God.

    You should also do your duty well without

    any attachments. Only by doing so you canattain perfectness. Remember that whatever

    is done by superior persons is followed by

    others, and whatever he demonstrates by

    action, is followed by other people. (So fight

    this war, which is being fought for

    establishing the righteousness, be the winner

    and set an example for others).

    I have, O son of Pratha (Arjun), no duty to

    perform in the three worlds and there is

    nothing yet to be gained by me, yet I

    do not continue to work without relaxation,

    people would follow me in every way and

    the worlds would perish, and I should be

    ruining these worlds and people. Just as theunwise continue to work with attachment,

    the wise act without attachment in their

    duties for the guidance and well being of the

    worlds. Wise should not unsettle the

    understanding of the ignorant, but should

    continue to steadily do their duties while

    encouraging others to do likewise. By action

    alone, King Janaka and others who have

    attained perfection did so simply with the

    aim of guiding ignorant men.

    The wise, by understanding that the

    properties of my Prakrti only perform all

    actions do to not become attached to the

    Parakrti. Men of perfect knowledge should

    Renounce all actions to me, with mindcentred on the Self, getting rid of hope and

    selfishness and mental agony. (For Arjuna,

    war is the only rightful action at this hour).

    Those who with full devotion and belief in

    me, follow this teaching of Mine, are freed

    from the bondages of work, but those who

    decry this teaching of Mine, are deluded in

    all knowledge and are devoid of

    discrimination, and bound to be ruined. All

    compelled by force. The Lord said it is

    desire; it is anger, born of the Rajo Guna, of

    great craving, and of great sin. Know this to

    be as a great foe in the path to perfectness, in

    this world. Just as the fire is enveloped by

    smoke, and a mirror by dust and an embryo

    by the secundine, the desires cover the

    knowledge. The fire is never satisfied andsimilarly the desires, which are nothing but

    the enemy of the wise, never satisfy. The

    sense organs, the mind and even intellect are

    over powered by the desires and the persons

    deviate from their paths. O Arjuna, keep

    your sense organs under control, as they are

    the enemies of knowledge and

    discrimination. Sense organs are more

    refined than the body, but mind is powerful

    than sense organs, intellect is powerful than

    mind and soul is better than intellect.

    Threfore, O Arjuna, control the senses and

    desires at the outset, and purify your soul

    through service to the God, meditation and

    worship etc.

    The Lord said, O Arjuna, this knowledge of

    imperishable Yoga which is being given to

    you, was given by Me to the Sun (so Gita is

    available from the time immemorable), who told

    this to his son Vaivasvat Manu. Manu told it

    to his son King Ikshvaku and he told it to the

    sages. But later this knowledge was lost and

    forgotten. Now, considering you to dear to

    Me, I am imparting this secret knowledge to

    you. Arjun, however, was not convinced as

    to how the Lord could be so aged so as to

    teach the Sun god etc. Lord said, Arjun you

    should not have any doubt. Me and youhave had many births, but you do not know

    The Lord said, Arjuna, what is action and

    what is inaction is a puzzling question for

    even the intelligent beings. Therefore, I shall

    action in inaction and inaction in action, iswise among men and is a Yogi. All his

    actions are free from desire and thoughts of

    the world and his actions are burnt up in the

    fire of wisdom. He, who no longer depends

    on the world and is ever satisfied, does

    Some Yogis offer sacrifice only in the shape

    of worship to gods. Others pour into the fire

    of Brahma the very sacrifice in the shape of

    the Self through the sacrifice known as the

    perception of identity. Yet others offer as

    sacrifice their senses of hearing etc. into the

    fires of self discipline and some ofer all thefunctions of their senses and the functions of

    the vital airs into the fire of Yoga in the

    shape of self control, kindled by wisdom.

    But Yoga of knowledge is better than all, and

    you should understand this, so that your

    desires are extinguished and you shall see all

    The Lord said, the yoga of knowledge and

    the yoga of action, both lead to supreme

    bliss. Of the two, however, the yoga of

    action is easier to practice and is superior to

    yoga of knowledge. The Karmayogi who

    neither hates nor desires should be ever

    considered a renouncer, for he is free from

    the pairs of opposites and is, therefore,

    completely free from bondage of Karma.

    Discipline of Knowledge (that is, critical

    analysis and study of physical world) andDiscipline of Action are not different. Both

    are the same and if you are firmly established

    in any one of them, you get the fruits of

    both. He, who sees that the ways of

    discipline of knowledge and the discipline of

    action are one, perceives the reality. Even if

    all the actions are renounced, one can not be

    happy without love for God. Pure love for

    God hastens ones union with Him. A person

    with a pure soul performs his actions withfull devotion and keeps his senses under

    control. While he does this, he is not

    bonded by the fruits of actions. Whatever is

    done by him, he thinks that he is not the

    doer and he is separate from the sense

    Gist of the Chapter- Astanga-yoga, a mechanical meditative practice, controls the mind and

    O Arjun, he who undertakes actions without

    desires for its fruits is a Sanyasi and a Yogi,

    and not he who does nothing, not even his

    designated and legitimate duties. To thecontemplative soul action without motive is

    said to be the means, but when he masters

    Yoga, tranquility of mind, serenity, is said to

    be the means to god realization. So it is very

    important to win over the self. To him, who

    has conquered his self by himself, his own

    self is a friend, but to him who has not, his

    own self acts as a foe. One who has

    conquered the self has attained God. All

    situations are equal for him and he is ever

    pleased in all situations. He treats all equally,

    be them friends or foes. A Yogi always keeps

    his body, mind and soul subdued and

    directed towards God, is lover of solitude and

    is free of all desires and possessions for

    enjoyments. A Yogi carefully keeps his seat

    But O Arjune, it is extremely difficult to

    control the mind, because it is like

    controlling the air, and because the mind is

    restless, turbulent, obstinate, hard to control

    been said that each person is riding a

    chariot named body, whose charioteer is

    intellect, mind the ropes and sense organs

    as horses. Thus in the company of mind

    and sense organs, the soul either finds

    pleasure or sorrows. Katha Upanishad

    1.3.3.4). But by practice and dispassion the

    mind can be controlled and success is

    assured.

    Arjun asked O Lord, what happens to a

    person who is lax in his striving and whose

    mind deviates from Yoga, having failed to

    attain perfection in it. The Lord said, there is

    no fall for him. Such a Yogi having attained

    to the world of the righteous and having

    lived there for countless years is reborn in

    the house of the pious and prosperous or in afamily of enlightened Yogis, but this kind of

    birth is very difficult to have in this world.

    In due course of time, he regains knowledge

    of the previous birth and he strives more

    than ever before for perfection, progresses

    further and ultimately attains the supreme

    state. Of all Yogis, one who devoutly

    techniques to know Me fully, knowing

    thousands tries to know me in essence and

    from thousands of such (seekers), only rarely

    one succeeds in really knowing. Earth,

    water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and

    ego, these eight constitute my lower

    (insentinent) nature eight-fold divided.Besides these, there is also my higher

    (sentinent) nature the life element

    sustaining the universe. All beings have

    evolved from this twofold prakrati. I am the
