Hill occupies one of the most fragile mountain eco-system, which is undergoing rapid phase of degradationresulting in decreasing soil fertility, untimely highintensity of rainfall, soil degradation etc. Keeping in mindthe present need of the farmers, ICAR-VPKAS isworking on the aspect of enhancing the productivityand ecological sustainability of hill agriculture throughniche- based diversification.Tuta absoluta is one of the serious pests of tomato causingextensive damage. It was noticed in tomato grown underpolyhouses in Bhagartola village of Almora. Polyhouses wheretomato was grown were surveyed and pest incidences of about 5-10% were noticed. The farmers of the area were made aware aboutthe identification of the pest and the potential damage. Infestedpolyhouses were sprayed with the insecticide, chlorantraniliprole @0.3 ml/l.The institute also conducted an awareness programme and scientist– state agriculture officials meet at Almora campus exclusively onT. absoluta. Survey was also conducted by the KVKs at Bageshwarand Uttarkashi districts. Both the KVKs are conducting awarenessmeetings during their routine visits and apprising the statefunctionaries. The institute and KVK staff also made significantcontributions in human resource development and improving qualityof life in general. The newsletter briefs the achievements and otheractivities of the institute during last six months. Any suggestion to

improve the quality of output/service is welcome.

higher remuneration. It has enormous potential in the North

Western and North Eastern hill regions of the country, which

are popular tourist destinations. Farmers of these regions can

cash in on the demand of sweet corn among the tourists as well

as local consumers by making fresh sweet corn available at

reasonable prices. Similarly, the growing demand for normal

corn for use as raw material in feed and processing industry has

opened up new avenues for farmers in the region. Two new

hybrid varieties [VL Sweet Corn Hybrid 2 (FSCH 75) of sweet

corn and Vivek Maize Hybrid 57 (FH 3754) of normal corn]

developed by ICAR-VPKAS, Almora to widen the varietal

options for farmers of these regions have been identified for the

states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand

and NE Hills (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur,

Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura) at the 61st Annual

Maize Workshop held at CSK HPKV HAREC, Bajaura (7-9

April, 2018). Salient features of these varieties are as follows:

VL Sweet Corn Hybrid 2 (FSCH 75) is a high yielding single-

cross sweet corn hybrid with an average yield of 10,347 kg/ha

in Zone I, registering yield superiority of 41.6 per cent over the

check Madhuri (7,309 kg/ha) in All India Coordinated Trials

during 2015-17. The harvestable maturity (green cob) of the

hybrid is 75-77 days in mid-hills. It is moderately resistant to

turcicum and maydis leaf blight, banded leaf & sheath blight and

curvularia leaf spot. TSS of the hybrid is 14.5-15.3%.

Vivek Maize Hybrid 57 (FH 3754) is a high yielding single-

cross normal corn hybrid with an average yield of 6,766 kg/ha

in Zone I, registering yield superiority of 13.5 per cent over the

check PMH 5 (5,962 kg/ha) in All India Coordinated Trials

during 2015-17. Maturity of the hybrid is 95-100 days in mid-

hills. It has yellow flint and bold grains (test-weight 280g) and

is moderately resistant to turcicum and maydis leaf blight.

Research Achievements

Incidence of Tuta absoluta in tomato inUttarakhand

Tuta absoluta is one of the serious pests of tomato causing

extensive damage in many countries. The larva, mine between

the upper & lower epidermis of leaves and make irregular

blotches. It also feeds on stem, buds, calyx and fruits. In fruits,

they make pin holes and mine inside. It is reported in brinjal,

potato, capsicum, datura, etc. Adults are small brown moth (5-

7 mm) with silvery and black spots and reportedly lay 250 eggs.

The pest was first reported in India in 2014. It was noticed

during May 2018 in tomato grown under polyhouses (Bhagartola,

Almora a MGMG village of ICAR- VPKAS). Owing to the

importance of the pest, ADG (Plant Protection), ICAR, New

Delhi was consulted and the survey and management of the

pest was carried out under his guidance. The guidance of Director

and scientists of ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru was also taken.

Subsequently, pheromone traps and parasitoid, Trichogramma

achaea were obtained from ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru for use

against T. obsoluta in Uttarakhand.

A team of Director, ICAR-VPKAS along with scientists surveyed

the village Bhagartola, Jageshwar on 29-05-18. Polyhouses where

tomato was grown were surveyed and pest incidences of about

5-10% were noticed. The farmers of the area were made aware

about the identification of the pest and the potential damage.

Severely infested polyhouses were sprayed with the insecticide,

chlorantraniliprole @ 0.3 ml/l.

A farmer from Dhari village of Nainital district called in the

helpline service of the institute for pinworm damage.

Immediately, the state government has conducted an awareness

Training Programmes● A three days training and skill up-gradation programme on

Seed Production for hill farmwomen was organized during

March 5-7, 2018 at the institute. Twenty seven farmwomen

belonging to nine villages of Chaukhutiya block of Almora

district participated in the training programme.

● A five days skill and enterpreneurship development training

programme on Parvatiya Phasalaon ka Beejotpadan avam

Krishigat Udhyam was organized during March 8-12, 2018

at the institute under TSP. In this programme, 28 farmers

from Lahaul Spiti, Himachal Pradesh participated.

● One day training program on “Parwatiya Krishakon ka beej

utpadan mein kaushal vikas” for hill farmwomen was

organized during March 20, 2018 at the institute. Ten farmers

belonging to Chaukhutiya block of Almora district

participated in the training programme.

● One day PPVFRA training cum-awareness workshop was

organised for farmers and stakeholder on March 22, 2018.

● A three day training and skill up-gradation programme on

“Janjatiya Krishakon ka beej utpadan mein kaushal vikas” for

formers was organized during March 21-23, 2018 at the

institute under TSP and benefited twenty eight farmers of

Jhankat, block Setarganj of U. S. Nagar distirct.

was organized during March 27-28, 2018 at the institute for

the benefit of thirty farmers belonging to Garsain, Dwarahat,

Tarikhet block.

● A two day training and skill up-gradation programme on

Vegetables and other crops for farmers was organized during

March 30-31, 2018 at the institute. Twenty three farmers

belonging to Pati, Barakot, Champawat participated in the

training programme.

● A three days training program on Kharif Fasalon ki Unnat

Utpadan Takniken under ATMA Project, Pauri Garhawal was

held for 30 farmers of Jaharikhal, Rikharikhal, Dugadda,

District.- Pauri Ghadhawal during May 7-9, 2018.

● An exposure visit for 35 IFS officers, ATI, Nainital was

conducted on May 9, 2018.

● A summer training programme for 30 students of B.Sc.

(Ag.) of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi was conducted

during May 15-18, 2018.
