Pet Owners! Keep ’em IN!Only indoor pets are allowed in the park.

Don’t let your CAT out to be digging inyour neighbors' landscaping or flowers!

Walk your DOG on a leash (it’s thelaw) and it’s your responsibility to pick up your dog’s waste and properlydispose of it.

Clothes dryers are a convenienceand a necessity to households; how-ever, if they are not properly installedor maintained, fires can occur. Anoverall increase in dryer related firesoccur during the winter and springmonths. It is believed that the weath-er/humidity, quantity and type ofclothing worn in the colder seasonscould potentially be a defining factor in the occurrence of clothes dryer re-lated fires.

When there is moisture in the air thelint tends to stick to the exhaust areaso it means regular cleaning out ofboth the trap and the exhaust pipe. Ablocked vent or exhaust pipe blockshot air from release, turning the highlycombustible lint in the trap or exhaustpipe into a fire hazard. A fire can oc-cur when the blocked exhaust ventcauses overheating to the point thatlint, combustible items in the dryer or

nearby, ignite. Failure to clean out linttraps, vents, and surrounding areas ofthe dryer has been found to be themain cause of dryer fires.

Residents and property managersmust check both the lint trap and thepipe for lint. A vacuum cleaner canbe used to help clear out lint buildupin the dryer.

Other ways that your dryer exhaust

vent can become blocked includecrimping of the exhaust tubing or small nests from animals.

Safety tips: How to ensure you don’thave a dryer fire:

• Don’t leave your dryer running un-attended. The shut-off switch can fail, causing the dryer to run continually.

• Never put any items lined with nat-ural or synthetic material, such as rub-ber-soled running shoes, in the dryer.

• Foam pillows or clothing with foampadding should be left out to air dry.

• Never put mops or rags thathave been used with a wax, flamma-ble solvents or oils in the dryer. Even ifthese objects have been previouslycleaned, they can still catch fire in thedryer.

• If your clothes are taking longer than normal to dry, check for blockedpipes or lint buildup. If the unit is clean, the heater coil on the unit may be

malfunctioning.• Make sure that dryer vent flaps

are not clogged, shut or sticking. Aclogged vent occurring from a build-up of lint could make the dryer oper-ate inefficiently and dangerously asthere is a chance that the tempera-ture of the dryer machinery might gethot enough to ignite lint or combus-tibles.

• Replace ripped filters or crackedexhaust vents.

• Plastic or vinyl ducts should notbe used. They can melt, droop downin certain areas creating pockets thatmight trap lint or collapse and fail tocontain the fire within the unit unlikealuminum or steel ducts.

• A blocked vent will cause thedryer’s high temperature safety switchto continually cycle on and off, whichcan lead to early failure.

• Be sure to place a smoke detec-tor in the general vicinity of the dryer.

• Keep the area around the dryer clear of flammable materials.

• Make sure the dryer is pluggedinto an outlet with sufficient power.

• Another fire hazard is the incor-rect illegal installation of dryer ventingwhich instead of exhausting outsideterminates in the attic, crawl space,or interior walls.

• Liquid fabric softener can accel-erate the burning speed of all-cottonclothing including fleece, terry clothand velour, according to the consum-er watchdog Consumer Reports. Usedryer sheets for these clothes instead.

• Clean trap with soap and water until waxy buildup is gone and water flows through.

Stay safe when using clothes dryer
