October was an interesting
month for community service
activities, all of which took
place at the Community
Center of Nashville.
Students began with the 3rd
Annual Benefit Dinner for the
Community Center. JILG was
responsible for assisting with
dinner and the silent auction.Between the silent auction
and the live auction, the
students were invited to
perform with the band on
stage. This was definitely a
highlight of the evening.
The following weekend, JILG
students returned to assist the
Community Center with a
concession stand for their 1st
Annual Seniorama. They
returned the next day to work
a different concession stand
for the Lions Club and
Lighthouse Church during
their Halloween Carnival.
The last week of the month
was spent designing an
elaborate haunted house
under the direction of Rick
Harris and members of theNashville Moose. It is difficult
to tell which the students
enjoyed more: decorating the
haunted house or scaring
visitors on Halloween.

A Look Inside the Classroom
Don Hawkins Challenges Seniors toThink of Life Lessons at 2008 I & I
The only persons behavior
I can control is my own.
This quote by Eleanor
Roosevelt was used to
demonstrate an importantlife lesson our guest
speaker, Don Hawkins,
shared with JILG students
at the 2008 Initiation &
Installation Ceremony on
November 3, 2008. He also
encouraged students to
approach new situations
with a positive attitude, and
to remember that working
together as a team can
accomplish much more
than ignoring the value of
others helping make
something successful.
On behalf of the members
of the Nashville Chapter of
the Illinois Career
Association, I would like to
extend my thanks to all
parents, family, and friends
who attended our ceremony
and shared this learning
experience with my
students. Your support is a

In October, students had
the opportunity to

interested. In connection
with this research,
students listened to three

JILG students have been researching careers.
Each student was to choose a job that he or she
are interested in pursuing in the future and create
a PowerPoint presentation about it. Students will
talk about why they chose the job, as well as
details about the particular occupation.
Requirements of the job, the good and bad things
about the job, workplace safety, social skills, and
adaptability skills needed for the job are all
components of the students presentations. The
students are also to discuss whether they plan to
advance in this job and what the next step would
be to pursue this occupation. At the end of the
presentation, the students are to recommend the
job to others, or decide not to and explain why.
By the end of all of the research done by the
students, they may not recommend the job to you;
they may change their minds about taking on this
job in the future.
This project really helps students in deciding what
to do in the future, including what to choose as a
major for college and where to go to get that
education. Researching careers in class helps
students figure out what they are interested in and
what kinds of jobs are out there. Its awesome when
students can research future plans in school because
many may not have time outside of school due to
extra-curricular activities or after-school jobs. JILGis a great class to prep seniors for the future, no
matter what they want to do.
