Pancreas enzyme supplementation to treat steatorrhea in patients with pancreas
exocrine insufficiency.
This double blind RCT compared the effectiveness of pancreas enzyme
supplementation vs. placebo for patients with steatorrhea due to chronic pancreatitis or
after total pancreatectomy.

Role: Principle investigator
A 20 minute secretin stimulated endoscopic pancreas function test in patients with
and without chronic pancreatitis.
This study compared the bicarbonate concentration of pancreas juice obtained by
endoscopic aspiration of secretions in the duodenum over 20 minutes after secretin
stimulation.
6. NIH/NIDDK DK109124 (Bellin, PI, Lara site-PI) 2017-present
POST-Prospective observational study (POST) of total pancreatectomy and islet
autotransplantation (TPIAT).
The purpose of this multi-center study is to obtain comprehensive clinical data,
including validated quality of life and pain scores in patients before and after
undergoing TPIAT in adults and children. Tissue bio-banking is also being performed
for future studies. The information should allow better understanding of patient
characteristics that may indicate when it is appropriate to perform TPIAT, or to avoid
it, and what the outcomes are.
7. NIH/NIDDK DK108327 (Conwell) 2014-present
PROCEED-Prospective evaluation of chronic pancreatitis for epidemiologic and
translational studies.
This study is a multi-center longitudinal study of patients with abdominal pain, acute
pancreatitis, and suspected and established chronic pancreatitis to determine clinical
parameters that will allow us to better understand disease progression and patient
characteristics that indicate the progression and outcomes. Tissue bio-banking is also
ongoing for current and future studies.

MENTORING:
-Peter P. Stanich, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, The Ohio State
University. I have included Dr. Stanich in our recent work using a novel radiofrequency
ablation catheter which was developed by me. We are gathering our first patients in a
multi-center experience and presenting data at the national meetings.
-Sebastian Strobel, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, The Ohio State
University. I am working with Dr. Strobel to identify areas of research that will help him
grow academically. As his interest is in endoscopy we have put him in contact with
instrument manufacturers, and he is one of the few physicians trained in performing full
thickness resection. He has also done advanced training through industry and academic
contacts. We are working on an endoscopic project which will hopefully attract funding
from one of the GI societies.
- BahaaEldeen Ismail, MD. We had a close working relationship during fellowship, and
helped him develop a niche in small bowel endoscopy. He has gone on to grow in the
filed as well as GI motility at the University of Kentucky where he is faculty. We talk
frequently and we continue our research interests, including a recent abstract on use of
endoscopic clips for GI bleeding. I am also helping him with his application to develop a
small bowel program at his institution. We are interested in interviewing him for a
position at POSU in the near future.
- Laura Nemer, MD. Currently a fellow in our Department. We have been working
together to develop an interest in academia, and just finished mining data from HCUP
where we studied the relationship between recent marijuana legalization and the
incidence of acute pancreatitis. We have to polish the data and she will write the
manuscripts. She is thinking about advanced training so we are working on identifying
what field to move into.
- Tolga Erim, DO. A junior staff physician at Cleveland Clinic Florida. We collaborated
in learning advanced endoscopic procedures including ESD, POEM, endoscopic Zenker’s
diverticulotomy, and others. He is now a recognized expert in advanced endoscopic
procedures locally and nationally.
Luis F. Lara, MD

- Alicia Alvarez, MD. I mentored her through fellowship, and she finished an Advanced
Endoscopy Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center/Harvard Medical School. She is
now in private practice.
