Anyone is likely to admit, that

good environment and peaceful

life fosters our well-being. For it

is pleasurable to live one’s home

comfortably, somewhere in an at-

tractive neighbourhood, to have a satisfying, profitable job

altogether. However still, friendship proves the truth to be

the most important life quality, especially when it ascertains

to be genuine, when people stand up to years of testing time.

Since it has been established, that any splitting of

such a bond, any impression of disloyalty, engen-

ders incredibly zealous experience – overpowering

stress leading to various afflictions, even to loss of life.

Therapists, or diviners likewise, they pronounce it in uni-

ty, that family-friendly and sociable surrounding is of gre-

at essence to be able to remain healthful and come into con-

tact with happiness. The studies concerning human psy-

chological and physical condition provides the evidence

how hostility, malice or intolerance may deprive us of joy.

Hence, what is the remedy to challenge it? We need to

try and be critically watchful and avoid any adver-

se, dummy and passing relations. It is waste of time to

be worrying about grumblers and malcontents. Far bet-

ter it is to spend it on honest conversations, cordial get-

togethers or supportive acts in-between the dearest.

Vacations, children’s holidays, weekends, public holidays, saint’s days – we all enjoy it, look forward to, plan it, we do pre-parations for it. Free time escapes too suddenly, and again we await further spare time, we plan and prepare anew. It so, because these moments are important, to anyone, to relax, have a breath from routine, to travel somewhere and see the sights. We use it up individual ways – some people actively – hiking, biking, swimming, jogging, other persons less keenly, yet not actually less interestingly – making up for backlog, dusting off books, reading newspapers, reflecting on movies. We take pleasure in meeting our intimates, family, we like visiting new places and those of some past, treating ourselves with appeals of nature. It is all we need to recharge our batteries, regenerate for upcoming work and up-coming efforts. So as not to fritter away any spare time, we have to get ready for it properly. For a diabetes patient it is particularly focal. As in any other life circumstances, resting occasion is equally challenging. Very often, it comes difficult, repetitious, disturbing, yet often po-ssible to rise above it. The trust we go well, will-power, willingness is the approach to spend the time gaily, in contentment and security, restoring our mental and physical vitals. In order to make it easier for you, we offer some editorial materials – diabetes’ indispensable kit, driving directives for diabetes, physical exercise guidelines, but still, first and foremost self-control principles, which no one diabetes should forget about. We would like to bid you helpful reading and likeable leave

is signalled by drowsiness and giddiness. 1. There, in the car, you have to be equipped with the diabetes indispensable kit: insulin pen, wrist band, or any disease identification items, glucometer altogether with test strips.

2. Do not challenge driving, until you screen your blood glucose and take your insulin and breakfast.

3. If you have to use your car, while your glucose is below 90mg%, consume anything necessarily. Important it is, to take some sandwiches or chocolate bars on you.

4. Even if your workplace or allotment is not far away, you ought to have provisions, sweet juice, any can dies, stored in your vehicle. Diabetes experienced, they claim, cola drink is good, cause quickly relieves. In case, you get traffic-jammed or have not eaten for any other reason, it is your mini, private pantry to serve your anti hypoglycaemia support.

5. If you are unwell, pull over somewhere safe and remove the keys from the ignition switch. Have a san dwich or sugar cubes, and after 15-20 minutes try your blood sugars. Do rest couples of minutes, before you set off your route. Your brain requires it. So as not to cross over road axis, gain needless speed or to be forced to brake.

6. If the journey is supposed to be longer, attempt to find a person to accompany you, one who would be able of first aid on hypoglycaemia. .

7. Avoid driving at night, because albeit you may not be suffering diabetes retinopathy, deterioration in eye retina progresses simultaneously. In consequence, your vision may get disturbed, for instance due to the blinding car lights.

8. If it is to be morning time, the advice is to pass up strong alcohol (vodka, whisky) or sweet either (liqueur, beer), and choose just some 20g of wine (half a glass).

9. If your doctor modified your insulin or routine of administering your medicine, it is desirable to refrain from driving for at least a weak or more. Your body system calls for getting into groove, and you your self must learn your new reactions to the new drug

Thursdays’Dinners

Thursdays’ Dinners by Diabe-tes is a tradition by now. The

dinners are healthy and decent as befits proper dinners, howe-ver it is not the key aim. The ol-den royal convention of king Sta-nislaw Thursday dinners is still si-lent duty, thus to achieve it, a per-son who commits to organize such an event has to ensure the venue. This time, there was an unusual-ly interesting lecture of prof. dr. hab Ida Kinalska, who managed an actually motivating speech on

advanced trends in diabetes treat-ments. It happens to be aptly-ad-dressed, because for those who at-tend our dinners, it is knowled-geoffirst instance. In truth, dia-betes is challenging indeed, and as experience advises best, aware-ness, discipline and self-control is critical to be in command of seve-re complications, that might ari-se, and to enhance qualities of life, defying the disease downsides. Andrzej Zaorski being interviewed by Anna Danilewicz

Has the diabetes straightened up your life deeply or has it just happened to regulate your calendar adjustments?

-Yes,indeed.Ihavemytimepointsfixed:mealtime,me-asuring time, taking medicine time. My wife had to learn how to approach me and what food to be serving. At pre-sent, I meetly abstain pork, instead I eat turkey, poultry, beef. The regularity of meals, calories doses, diet altogether is what I must observe. The situation changes, while I am stayinghereinBiałystok(forafewweeksworkingontheshow“ThePolice”-ref.AD).Iamnotabletotuneinsoqu-ickly, but the consequences are quick: today I had such a moment, when I came back home in the evening I was all wet, and was forced to eat something. Once, a doctor told me, that it is better to have 400 milligrams of sugar in blo-od than 40 milligrams, because when it is so low then bra-in command it with might and main. I did experience such a go, when I lost my consciousness. But at the wheel! You wrote in your book, that having received the news about your diabetes you were hopping out of joy. Because you were afraid of more serious disease. After so many years, is it still “just” diabetes??

- Certainly! Of course, thanks to mister Banting who discovered insulin. There was a Canadian movie, an account on insulin’s Father. Ironically, me parting in it, in Polish-language version, I was dubbing the per-son who starred Banting.

Hearing you are ill, were you aware of what it is?

- Not a clue! Before they rendered the diagnosis, I’d presumed only that something wrong was going on with me. For instance, I distasted beer. We were in Australia, and my colleagues say: “what a great beer in here!”. I am drinking either and turning puzzled somewhat, cause it feels ordinary. It was just how it started. Merely after a while, I recognised it was dia-betes symptoms. As a matter of fact, there were some accidents, that I associate with the disease. My father died, and I experienced it severely. Next to it, du-ring vacations, I unearthed from press, my “Polish zoo” was removed from broadcast programming. No one informed me about it straight into my face. It was shocking, as I believed it could be possible, but in communism. In reverse, it was these ”pampers in pants”, the right wing’s doings. Distressing, to say. Gradually, it was all building up.In addition, my diet was incredibly unhealthy and my life on stage and travelling was too intense. My spouseisaterrificcook, yetshedoesnotknowhowto prepare hock. So, during my trips I treated myself hock. It is bomb-caloric! Paired with beer! Still, the regretwasthatbeerflavourwasescapingme.

Howmuch of sacrifices does diabetes necessitate? How much enjoyments you have had to forsake?

- The hock has been counted out of menu, and no return. Since beer lost its tang, I do not miss it. On the contrary, I am keen in truth to have some savvy wine. It is a matter of give and take, especially when life is at hazard, especially to gain it longer.Along the way, I realized that diabetes can be lasted out. As doctors prompt, we need to live as if normal. So I control my sugar levels as a simple duty, eight ti-mesaday,thefirstoneat6am,thelastoneat22pm.

If the blood sugar is too high, I take two or three insulinshots.Asanalternative, somefood–ifitis needed.

Have you ever got tempted to take a break in the diet regime?

- Not anymore at this point. Currently, provisions areallaccessible.Restaurantsofferpoultry,fish.It is not a problem to lead life normal.

The disease does not actually come down to tri-vial day by day struggle. It involves far more se-rious complications, what you have experienced yourself..

- TYes, that is correct. Diabetes is a stealth disease: no pain signals, often no signs or expressions, but something is going on there. Do you hold a grudge?

- Against the man? Yes, I do. He was regarded as a very good doctor. Well .. I referred not a word about him in my book, I had not a wish for it..

Right, inthebook, attheverybeginningyourecollectyourfirst thoughts straight after awakingout of stro-ke coma, which was a question, whether or not you lost your sense of humour..

It is still very interesting, thanks to his skills of depicting his childhood, still his erstwhi-le humorousness is gone. Luckily, this world even now amuses me.

In spite of the fact diabetes is such a common disease, a great deal of people are ashamed of it, or even afraid to own up at work or among friends, they are stricken. What is your opinion why?

- NI can not unravel it. Shame of what? If it was vene-real, we know it would be bashful, yet in self-reproach. These days, alcohol and drugs problems among people of fame and artists are so frequent and made public, that nobody seem shamefaced to admit oneself. This is closer

distressing, that a man has to booze on and on, that he or she neglects intimates, habitually unable of any work, than running healthy life-style and introducing insulin.

If truth to be told, we suffer diabetes not cause our fault.

- Interestingly, diabetes is a plague of Polish rural area. Land farming, cattle breeding is mechanised work now, and the changes in the trade bring differences in diet. Theused–to-bedietbackbonewascountrybread,we-ighty, dark, alible, so as one could brandish with scythe heartily. Today the labour is lighter, food altered and it is diabetes that reap the harvest. And we can not say, that the guilt is on the human side.

Were there any positives of diabetes in your life?

- The illness in fact brought nothing new, except for the must of self-control, measuring and eating habits. In the present day, my profession and carrier is less important than friendship, family, grandchildren, I have my time for them. But.. If I could work as I used to I would be do-ing it.

After they had released me from the hospital, she paid me a visit with her tape deck and this is how it got triggered.

And you poor reader, you will have your own judgment on it. If there is any worth of it? We may say, it is an atypical book, it com-bines frag-ments of jour-nal and diary together, it is a collection of serious il-lness expe-rience portra-

They inter-lace with one another and meet up in li-nes: from a de-scription of the furuncle being removed from the actor’s po-oper by some alluring nur-se, the story gently travels to a narrati-ve of youthful theatrical clas-ses in the Pala-ce of Culture and Science; all enlivened with fe-atures of private family affairs, that in turn lifted to “high society” anecdotes. Patients’safetyandconcern

For diabetes, the terms “piercing pen” and “lan-cet” is labels in common use, since they stand

for everyday personal practice of blood glucose examining. As of yet, majority of piercing pens in themarketwasadaptedtoextractbloodfromfin-gers, regardless of skin type and age of patients. The blood sampling, the feature of daily basis, was not only painful, but also disfiguring palmsandfingertipstocoarseandscarce.Thereby,wo-unded hands were stigmata-like. Therefore, pier-cing performed for years, paired with duties and constraints diabetes exacts, was intensely hard..

In fact, there is an answer to it. Namely, what the producers of medic accessories have got on

theirofferissafepiercingpensandfirst-classlan-cets, diabetes directed, as a matter of course. The

equipment is up to date technology (needles are chemo sterilised), that provides top-rate safe-ty, and uniformly the gear is delicate, optimal, precise, and what equally important effortless..

Safepiercingpens–single-shotpiercingapparatus–intendedtobeemployedinhospitals,andused

on purpose of laboratory blood tests (e.g. in glucose andcholesterollevelsanalysis).Safetyinthisinstan-ce applies both to patients and medical personnel..

The pen unique construction and an unusual-ly precise and slender needle serve to elimina-

te vibrations, preventing skin tissue against dama-ge and hurt. Additional lancet quality is prompt extracting of accurate blood amount at minimal so-reness; one shot is all..

S ingle–usepiercingpen isconstructedalsoasasafeguardagainstreuse–thesharppointhiddeninside protects against accidental injuries. Above all this–incareandforsecurityofpatients–thede-

sign of the pen is aimed to achieve accurate contact pressure on skin at the very moment of piercing. This means, that the depth the needle goes in and the sample of blood drawn are invariably the same.

There are choices of lancet types, hen-ce it is choices of applications, chiefly in re-

spect of how thick one’s skin is, certainly chil-d’s skin thickness must be different from adul-t’s or labourer’s. Consequently, such adjust-ments result in optimal blood quantities received..

One more originality is, that the piercing pens do work as expected in cases of the little patients,

who due to manifold piercing react with stress at the sight of a needle, often with cry outbursts. They ce-ase to fear the moment they detect no needle in view and no hurting of body; similarly adults behave..

W ith an eye to diabetes particularly, there has been devised lancets but personal. The-

se are once-in-a-lifetime needles for piercing skin and drawing blood in patient’s self-dependant glu-cose tests. The personal one-shot lancets coupled with multi-use piercing pens are trouble-free pro-tection against other person’s blood infections.u.

Our journalism is for You. Your personal letters are for us. The correspondence of Yours gladdens us, engages our workforce, many a time it is touching and appears a source of inspiration. The mail from You is published in form of separate articles in topical sections you can refer to. However, we would like to fashion a regular, fixed

column earmarked for Readers’ texts in our “Diabetes and Health” periodical.

From now on, we dedicate the Readers’ Pages to Your own freedom of choice!

This is going to be the space of magazine, where you are bound to find other Readers’ writings, it mi-

ght be in narration, or poems, or in form of plain yet how often moving and meaningful letters. These

are pages aimed to integrate us-participants, to share anything what vital and relevant to us all. Alto-

gether, our intention is not only exchanging knowledge with diabetics, but also to meet and understand

their everyday life with all its facets. Whether it is worries and sorrows or pleasures or better still - ac-

complishments. Life is not easy, especially when we commit to guide it wisely, in a good way, mindful-

ly, gaily. Existence of ill and sick is challenging, and more often than not intensifies loneliness. In spite

of everything, we are not alone, there are countless of people who have to struggle, who stand compara-

ble anxieties, but at the same time they may prove great will and strength to dare it and defy it, even if

it means “just to survive the day” it is absolutely important. We us, who need to screen our sugar levels

are numbers and numbers. Thanks to the pages, we are able to come closer to one another, to express one-

self or find out what is beyond us. So as to make this step nearer to those, who are actually at some di-

stance away, except they are dear. Within our promise, the pages will be found, we do encourage every

History of medicine facts part 2

The expertise and competence of doctors in Egypt was greatly valued among the persons who faced the land of Nile. Such admiration we can de-cipher in Homer’s Odyssey verses. Thanks to He-rodotus,wefindout,thatthekingsofPersia,Cy-rus the Great and Darius I absolutely depended their choices on the services..

Likewise to Mesopotamia art and science of healing, we are talking in here about me-dicdisciplineofmagic-sacrumcapacity.Reve-rends were doctors, and the diseases were in-flictedbygods,suchasRa,Osiris,IsisorPtah.The god Thot, the patron of science, he collec-ted all accessible knowledge in 42 tomes. The last 6 of them were dedicated to medicina..

Impossible it would be, so as not to mention ano-ther equally important god of pantheon in rela-tion to art of curing. Imhotep, thefigurewe areto quote, is particularly interesting, for we are able to trace him to the far-off times. He lived in XXVII B.C. and was an official of pharaoh Djo-ser. A priest, doctor, architect, the creator of step pyramid in Saqqara, since the event of his death he gradually was receiving cults of deification.

Medicine of Egyptians

In VI B.C. he already then was one of gods, Pta-h’s son. Via Hellenistic epoch, he was worship-ped just as Ptah as most significant in Mem-phis. The ill and sick pilgrimed to his sanctu-ary, where they served rituals. For instance, they were giving themselves to dreaming ses-sions, during which Imhotep was supposed to arouse in them and advocate adequate treat-ments. It was so called oneiromancy (divination basedupondreams), thatwas reflected later incults of Asclepius in Greece, who in turn and the same was observed by Greeks as Imhotep.

The very source of information on medic art in Egypt was papyruses, discovered by the river Nile. The most famous papyrus ma-nuscripts are of Edwin Smith, of Ebers, of HearstandtheonefromKahun.Thefirstofthem cited, dates XVII-XVI B.C., is on surge-ry. It comprises descriptions of fractures, di-slocations, wounds and respective therapies and remedies.

Among the methods of conduct are absorbing dressings, devices for immobilising bones broken, prescriptions for wounds in form of fats, honey, fresh meat. The Ebers papyrus, earlier in dating,

is in contrast a compilation of later origin founda-tion. Next to its education texts on internal dise-ases, we may learn also 3 other medical special-ties: medicaments, operations and .. spells. Doctors in ancient Egypt were recognised to remarkable esteem. On the contrary to Meso-potamia Tigris-Euphrates medicine, they relied on pragmatic labour than on practice of magic. Medics were taught in schools alongside tem-ples. The legendary ones were located in Helio-polis, Memphis, Thebes and Sais, this is whe-re the most considerable places of spirituali-ty were present. Again, Egyptians challenged Mesopotamian doctors and did not act draco-nian laws as punishment modes to any medi-cal malpractice. A doctor was to answer his gu-ilt, just in case he had not obeyed the scripts of Thot. It was a situation favouring doctors, but

Medicine in India Our reports on ancient India medicina are qu-ite insubstantial. The olden Indian names of do-ctors, that have been tracked down the farthest back, areCzaraka,SuśrutaorVagbhata, andstemfrom Brahmanism period. The knowledge conta-ined in their scripts has been founded on Ayurve-da. They did not institute it into specializations. Both internal and instrumental approaches were methods they understood as one and the same. Doctors belonged to Brahmin forward caste. The-ir education they started at very early age. Intro-duced by masters via lore. How to carry out ope-rations was demonstrated on fruit, animal blad-ders,filledwithwatergourds.Amanwhoaspi-red being a doctor had to stand an absolutely cha-ste character. Medic’s honoraria were reputed, just as severe were sentences of mistakes done..

Characteristic to Indian medicine was scarce role of gods in it, gods essential-ly meant source of knowledge. Confesse-dly, they admitted mystical origins of dise-ases in theory, and in such cases they exer-ted spells, prayers and rituals. Nonetheless, rationality prevailed in their customs, ba-sed on bodily reasons and facts of nature..

Alike as in India, Chinese medics were hi-ghly prized, however their responsibility of medical errors amounted to grave sanctions, even death penalties. An exceptional gro-up in the vocation was the apothecary clerks, who executed doctors’ prescriptions. Ano-ther special assembly of doctors were travel-ling doctors, who mainly attended bazaars..

Horizontal better thanvertical

The common belief, that paral-lel striped garments optically bro-adens one’s figure is fallacious, Pe-

ter Thompson states, a psychologist of YorkUniversity, whowas proba-bly thefirstonescientistwhoexplo-red this well-known optic delusion on grounds of fashion. It was depic-ted in XIX century, by a famous Ger-man medic and physiologist, Her-mann von Helmholtz. Dr Thompson applied the rule to female items of clo-thing and pointed, that an upright li-ned dress widens those who wear it six percent more, than an identical size levelled dress. Helmholtz was so convinced, that the horizontal strings look as if higher and thinner, than the vertical ones. It prompted me to draw

the conclusion, that thanks to horizon-tal lines objects seem taller and slen-derer–Thompsonexplains.Itcontra-dicts the idea, that horizontal gives im-pression someone is bigger sideways. I decided to learn the truth. On the ba-sis of studies, on the group of 20 pe-ople, who judged relative dimensions of various clothes, striped straight si-delong and straight down, Thompson says: horizontal stripes do not bro-aden entities. The effect is subtle, ho-wever persons, who dress in vertical stripes appear as if wider. Horizon-tal ones give the feeling of being slim-mer. Helmholtz indicated, that wo-men clothed in horizontal stripes fa-brics expected being seen as taller. It merely discloses the fact, that the vo-gue trends of XIX century was just dif-ferent in perception and assessment. The surveyor can not answer, when the conception, that horizontal gives impression of widening, became gene-rally accepted, just alike why vertical is supposed to give inkling somebo-dy is leaner and shorter, than he or she actually is. I can not identify the effect and recognize the illusion it brings..

Slimfigureandlifelighter

On the ground of spreading “epi-demic of obese” in Great Britain, the children who are unhealthily overwe-ighed will be separated from parents and assigned to social care, represen-tatives of local councils forewarn. The trends in progress show, that in four years now, there will be a million of il-l-weighed children, standing all serio-us chances of diseases: heart dysfunc-

tions, strokes, hyper pressure and diabetes. Local Government Asso-ciation(LGA)of400councilsinEn-gland and Wales predicts, that so-cial welfare will have to attempt drastic steps, so in order to improve physical and mental condition of ba-dly-overweighed.

Social workers rarely engage themselves into such matters, on assumption that the best influen-ce is the parents. The LGA cautio-ned still, that the social services will need to regard the obese children as “victims of parental neglectedness”, just as the children who are malnu-tritioned. The union forecast, that thesocialcareofficerswillbeboundto intervene in juvenile cases of cor-pulence. They declare also, that the councils will be obliged to take ac-tions against fathers and mothers, who put at risk their sons and dau-ghters, and that the worst-instance sanction would be appointing the fattest young people to special rule of control. The LGA avow Great Bri-tain rapidly heads to be “the world obese focal point”, while growing in

weight is followed by higher local taxes. The increase in public expen-ditures stems from the necessity to make real-life adjustments, such as generously proportioned furniture in school classes, dining-rooms and gymnasiums. More over, it seems that thousands of pounds will be al-located on the same purpose in cre-mator furnaces, which is an adequ-ate cause to slim down.

Eat, but remain hungry

Scientists have invented a pill, which preserves diet outcomes. Thanks to it, people who watched their weight are free to return to the-ir routine eating habits, unafraid of gaining body flesh back. The ori-ginatorsof the tabletaffirm, that itcomprises well-known diet supple-ment–alphalipoicacid,whichalto-gether curbs ageing, the after-effect of low-calories regimes. Two rese-archers raise the question, whether experiments on rats can be related to humans. The head of the program-me, Malcolm Goyns, the director of ImmorgeneConcepts, the scientificresearches company in Stockton-on-Tees, he announced, that the results are so convincing, that he is going to switch his diet.

The reports from tropical Okina-wa island, southwest to Japan, whe-re the home of the biggest centena-rians population is, give an exam-ple, that low-calorie food and drink can lengthen life. There, the traditio-nal bill of fare is rich of vegetables andfishandfathumbleonthewho-le.Also,thespecificmaximisinvi-gour “Hara hachi bu” - “Eat to be full, but in 80%”. They understand it, that abdomen receptors need 20 min to send information to bra-inofhowmuchstomachwasfilledup. The custom teaches so as not to overindulge oneself, and so therefo-re the Okinawa people are the slim-mest and healthiest among Japane-se. Low-calorie diets are as if inna-te for those nations, our civilisations inturnmayfacedifficultiestoadaptit. The newest findings show, thatobeying to low-energy diet for half a year, followed by applying alpha-lipoic acid awards in extra years of existence. Sole supplement is poin-tless. It is expected, that the alphali-

poic acid directs our organism to beha-ve as if it was still on diet. In a straight line, it prevents growing in weight. More often than not, the moment re-strictive diet comes to end, body mass goesup,butthe-lipoicacidopposesyo-yo effect and body weight stabili-ses, in spite of return to normal food choices.

Male and female being

Men and women behave their dif-ferent ways, since their brains are he and she physically unique. The im-pression is that they have been built as a result of distinctive genetic desi-gns. Accordingly to the newest neuro-logical research, dissimilarities in ne-rvous junctures and bio chemicals are so great, that we can draw the conclu-sion, that there exists not one human-kind brain, but two of them. Perhaps indeed, man is from Mars, woman from Venus. The perception of both sexes as of two separate planets has become popular, from the time when

an American psychotherapist, John Grayputitinpenin1992.Untilre-cently, those disparities was expla-ined as sexual hormones influen-ces or social laws of gender conduct. This idea, is frequently undermined now, on the basis of neurological re-ports in “New Scientist”. Anatomic variations grow to be evident and might serve to clarify some of my-steries. For instance, why masculi-ne and feminine psychic illnesses are not of the same type and what is the reason that medicines might af-fect them poles apart, or how come chronic ailments touch more wo-mankind not mankind. Despite it has been long years ago the sex bra-in differences were discovered, it was opined, that they were restric-ted to the hypothalamus, the brain area that rules foodorderliness, fi-ght instincts and sex drive. Today, we find out, that extents of brainstructures are in respect to sexual characteristics.

Further revisions prove also, thatthehippocampusfield,whichre-sponses for short-run memory and space understanding, is relatively big-ger again on the female side. The sound, we sense while eating, mayinfluenceourtastebuds,scienti-sts claim. They ascertained the relation between tones people hear at the po-intofeatingandflavourperceptions.Professor Charles Spence, a psycholo-gistofOxfordUniversitydiscovered,that manipulating with the noises, we make on food consumption, may cau-se, that given food may appear as to

bemore crunchy or further soft. Re-creating sea hum records rouses , tho-se who at act of eating, to detect se-afood tangs, when hen cackling or oil crackling suggests frying of beacon. Earlier on it was believed, that savo-ur experiences happen just thanks to taste and smell modalities. The pro-fessor Spence demonstrated his fin-dings at the Cheltenham Science Fe-stival, the event sponsored by “Daily Telegraph” newspaper. We evaluated how crisp chips and biscuits or cookies are, and it turned out, that the time we were intensifying sound waves frequ-ency, the test participants felt things to sound more crisp, but the time we were deadening the frequency the par-ticipants made them out softer. Profes-sor Spence cooperates with a few food companies, such as Nestle or Unile-ver, soas to contribute tonewflavo-urs blends of their products. Novelties

Rapid DNA test, available alreadyon the market, was given recogni-tion as the invention of the year, awarded by the “Time” magazi-ne. The weekly paper published 50 most remarkable innovations of 2008. The genetic test is worth hun-dreds of dollars. It is as simple as applying a sample of saliva down the device, and chemical analysis displays who our ancestors were, whether we are bound to be bald or not, or lose our eye-sight, or if we can be predicted several other here-ditary diseases. The second position in the list is ranked by the electric Tesla Roadster car – fast, ecologi-cal and noiseless. Straight after that in rank, there is Moon Explore Or-biter, namely space probe of NASA, which is expected to travel to the Si-lver Globe next year. The list enc-loses a design of a glass-made sha-dowless skyscraper and a new ver-sion of energy-saving fridge, nota bene originated by Albert Einstein in 30’s.

The website of Ministry of Health reads:“Any organism genetically modified is different from human life form, for the fact the genetic material was not altered in

natural way....”

GMO* - the hazard to health, environment and small family farms ( producers of high-quality food)

Inotherwords,GMOgeneticmodificationstandsforimplanting extraneous genes into genetic material of a given organism. Genes are transferred and relocated be-tween unrelated species, for instance animal genes into vegetable. The methods employed are imprecise hereto. Never on earth such living beings can not be born natu-rally:tomatopairedwithfishgene,potatocoupledwithmedusa gene, carp and rice joined with human gene, lettuce combined with rat gene, soya and corn together with bacteria genes.FirstmassproductionwasGMplantsintheUSAin

1996. Nowadays, 70% of world making of GM plants isintheUnitedStatesandCanada,5percentinBrazil,20 % in Argentina and 4% in China. In global, just 1% of farmers use the technique. Europe is 0,01 percent in: Spain,Bulgaria,CzechRepublic,Romania,..andproba-bly in Poland.

Most popular GM crops are: maize or corn, soya, cot-ton, rapeseed. It is worth to remember, that clever cor-porations manoeuvre soya into 60 percent of processed items for consumption and corn starch is practiced as condensing powder in hundreds of products.

FALLACIES OF GMO Launching GM plants was tied in with marketing cam-

paigns of giant business corporations on the promises of:

• Realizingmoregenerousharvest,• Lesser herbicide expenditures,• Causing an end to hunger in the world,• Open way to co-existence of GM plants next to non-

FALLACY OF ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

Geneticmodificationshavenotconducedtoreduceher-bicide utilization. A consecutive sowing of GM plants to make them immune to herbicides, means still stron-gerspraying.RelyingonUSAgricultureDepartmentre-ports, dr. Charles Benbrook of Northwest Science and Environment Policy Centre in Idaho stated, that the pe-sticides and herbicides use on 222 mln ha to cultivate GM-soya, GM-corn, GM-cotton in USA from 1997 to2004 was disproportionate to traditional methods to more than 22,7 tones. It was asserted, that it comes up to large-scale criss-crossing between GM plants and the conventional ones. Pollens of GM plants are being trans-ported in air by wind and insects or simply by people to the bordering crops, and nothing can be done. For example,itwaswitnessed,themodifiedrapeseedpol-lens to be found in the 26 km distance to a plantation. In England, they scrutinized crosses of GM oily rapeseed and wild cabbage species (kohlrabi, rape, fodder beet, radish)andproved,thatthiswaypollinatedmutantwe-

Now then, the traditional and ecolo-gicalfarmfieldsneighbourwithGM,attheriskofcon-tamination, and the farmers are endangered, they will not be able to sell their produce as free of GMO, what in turn may entail fall of their farmsteads. The consumers

in one will be deprived of choice odds.

FALLACY OF MORE GENEROUS HARVESTS

The evidence of recent years show, that the farmers’ labour return is poorer than expected, what was authen-ticated by impartial science researchers. For instance, the GM soya delivery dropped in 5-10 percent.

FALLACY OF CAUSING WORLD HUNGER TO AN END

GMO, instead of contributing to eliminate the problem of hunger, it makes it happen deeper. Implementing GM technology unsettles the bio equilibrium in the existing eco systems, and subsequently triggers the worst-ever after-effects: soils arid and barren, running down yields, constantperilofdiseases.Theactualsetbackisnotdefi-ciency of food, but the distribution of it. What is very im-portant, the farmers, who buy GM seeds are subordina-ted to the chemical corporations, on conditions they are bound to be supplied just and only by patented GM’s every single year (the farmers are outlawed to use own seedsfromtheirownfieldsandobligedtopurchasecor-responding toGMchemicalagentsexclusive).Allqu-oted stands for the fact, that the cropgrowingprofitslands in GM supranational corporations bank accounts, instead of farmer’s pockets.

takes place, whilst any other country rejects GMO.

Short of the sowing season in 2009, German Minister of Agriculture Ilse Aigner, she introduced the interdic-tion on genetically modifiedcorn MON810. The question is, that cultivation of any va-riety MON810 and vend of its seeds and ears is illegal in Germany since then. The re-ason behind the interdiction: “...geneticallymodifiedcornMON810 variations are pre-carious to environment...”. Related interdictions weresanctioned in: Austria, Hun-gary, Italy, Greece, France, Wales, Scotland, Luxemburg. This is another raison d’être, why Polish politicians can not be justifying themselves, that the interdiction in Poland is without a solution. The Polish Bill on GMO is misleading to Polish people, advocating that, agricultural estates, tra-ditional and GMO ones, can be located side by side. The-re are none of leeways to bu-ild up buffer zones and sepa-

rate plantations of GMO and those, that cultivated conventionally, in line with tra-dition and ecology laws, throughout generations, time-honoured to soil and clima-te. In a simple conclusion, GMO is about to terminate naturally biological crop gro-wing. EM technology - dirt-free planet, healthy people

After long years of intense studies, professor Teruo Higa,theJapanesescientistofRyukyuuniversitycom-bined two most important bacteria strains, oxidative and anaerobic ones, developing foundation for series of products, called “Effective Microorganisms”, abbre-viated to EM. The technology EM is unique probiotic and antioxidating principles know-how. The fusion of microorganisms is absolutely health-safe. Organical-ly is eco-friendly and hence best useful for soil revita-lizing, immunising of animals and plants, combating against weeds, pests or any harvest contamination. It doesnotcontainanylifemicroorganisms, butfinalproducts of Effective Microorganisms metabolic co-nversion. Far more delicate than the microorgani-sms themselves. That is why EM-X is absorbed in stomach, where its compounds rapidly reach blo-od system. Therefore, it is encouraged to introdu-ce it in small doses, to gradually end at the optimal. In his newest book, Teruo Higa describes dioxins’ spoilage in environment and thereby food, putting forward an answer how to decompose the toxic. He illustrated the idea in many an example, such as al-lergic mother who drinks EM-X may surely expect her child allergy liberated. Dioxins turn out to peter out in mother’s milk then.EM-X may be paired with tea, fruit juice, mineral water.Onetablespoon(15ml)oncetothreetimesaday, at the point or between meals, maximum is 4-8 spoonfuls daily within 3 months period. Birch (Betula)Birchwood – white barked and lissom – is best knownoftrees.Equallybeautifulinspring, thetime it envelopswithamistoftinydelicate le-aves,asbeautiful inautumn, whenitshimmerswith golden ones. In its may it grows quickly, to reach its age even to 100 years. Betula breeds millions of seeds – microscopic kernels coated with wings, which are shared out by wind. The tree is not a needy species, on the contrary it is resistant to freezing cold, droughts and air conta-mination.Theonlyitsnecessityisampleofsun.

The earliest birches developed on Earth 90 million years ago. The genus continued to exist through the Ice Age, and in one with pines, 10 thousand years ago, they formed theirfirstgroupingsas forests.Upto today, birches are that heavy-duty to accommoda-te any free toehold of even sorriest soil. Betulas are before other species to inhabit stromas, fallows, bin-ges, dunes, terrains devastated by man, grounds lon-g-neglected,glades,areasdestroyedbyfire,growingalike on ruins of buildings or wounded brick walls. They fertilise barren sands, are able to hollow out roc-ky lands with their roots, or are capable to dehumidi-fy mires. Thanks to birches, damaged territories turn into greenness, which vibrant anew give place to other tree varieties and contribute new woods to appear. Be-tulas made their home in nearly entire northern hemi-sphere and there only. The favourite environment of white bark trees is plains, ones of cold and moderate climate. If in mountains, they may reside at altitudes above 2000 m amsl. Other natural settings might be woods

and their peripheries, bogs, banks of lakes and river val-leys. They occupy about 7% of wood acreage in total so far. Out of 40 species in the world, there is 7 of them in Poland. Across Baltic Sea to Tatras corners, silver birch and hairy birch aremost popular. The silver one (Betulapendula),calledweepingbirch, isofgrey-whitebark,whichflakesroundaboutsintocinctures.Itslongflacciddroopingbran-chlets are covered with minute resin glands named warts. – Other species, that belong to the family of birch, are rarities. Down south Poland, there might be found black birch. An individuality of this tree genus is fatherly birch, that was located nearby Ojcowo village in 1805. Only in the Tatra and Sudetes mountains, in the clime of monta-nes and mountain pines, there Carpathian birch is pre-sent. Two shrubby types instead are: low birch growing on the terrains of mire, to be precise the terrains of wa-terlogged Białostocczyzna, Pomerania and Lubelszczy-zna; and dwarf birch, which alike grows moor, but of Chełmińskie lake district and Sudetes.

ZExperts in the theme acknowledge birch as most in-dividual of trees. As for its white bark design and more than a few attributes it embodies. The birch owes the very uniqueness to piptoporus betulinis (common-ly:birchbracketorrazorstrop),forthefactthebetuli-nis grows exclusively on birch trees. The betulinis cry-stals scatter light and thanks to it derive the habitual white colour. The white bark functions well as a kind of protective coat, safeguarding against abundance of sun and the same against low temperatures, so it favo-urs birch extents. The betulinis constitutes some 25% of birch bark, is water-resistant, and nonetheless, even when humid it burns easily. Altogether, the betulinis conditions birch healing properties. Hence, betulinis, its acids and its fungi comprise many a health or be-auty product, or bee propolis products. For ages now, birches have been valued and widely used. It was birchbarktobeappliedforfirsteverwritings.Carpen-ters employed its wood, its leaves was adapted for dy-ing wool. Further more, the tar extracted from birch bark is antiseptic, bacteriocidal and antifungal. More still, it was also useful in leather trade and saddlery.

More again, it turned out practical in treating skin pro-blems, and got highly recognized for herbal therapies. There are well-known formulations of infusions and tinctures out of birch leaves, buds, juice and birch fun-gi. Birch sap Succus Betulae purges organism, immu-nises, regulates metabolic conversion, prevents from forming kidney stones. So, mixtures on birch leaves are traditionally exercised against reins disorders, and practiced as antirheumatic, antifebrile, detoxifying and metabolism stimulating remedies. Fresh leaves, as an alternative, are anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. The earliest instance of putting birch into service was Ignotus obliguus fungi extract, which proved to be an-ti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and enhan-cing immunity. In our day, birch timber is an apprecia-ted material for such industries as: furniture commer-ce, paper manufacturing and chemical business. Wa-tertightandflexiblebirchplywoodisutilizedinpro-duction of yachts, ships, gliders or recreational airpla-nes.Anotherexampleisartificialsilk,fabricatedfromthe cellulose obtained during chemical decomposi-tion of birch wood. The process of birch pyrolisis gives wood coal, acetic acid, methyl alcohol and pitch. Deep-rooted beliefs of numerous nations and cultures say, that birch symbolizes beginning, of life, spring, of sad-ness, of death, power, punishment, innocence, sereni-ty, love , wisdom, purity or joy. In far olden times, birch was a tree of magic, exceptional for “rituals on dise-ases”. “Witchy birch wands” were for chasing evil spi-rits out, among which spirits of disobedience and stub-bornness. Withes made of birch, used in baths, invigo-rated blood circulation and cleansed blood in general. An ancient, Slavic custom was hanging birch whisks up in households, so as to render them chaste and free of wicked powers. Birch epitomised goodness, com-passion and “being weeping”, so was copsed next to graves in cemeteries, and soon after, the moment Chri-stianity was assumed our faith, burial crosses were bu-ilt out of the wood. As a symbol of rebirth and revival, birch was the Whitsun ornament of houses and stalls and Corpus Christi feast adornment of altars. It was believed, that birch twigs protected travellers and ho-mes, because touching them brings vivacity and pe-ace. Contemporary research explain, that birch wood and timber emits negative ions, therefore is the sour-ce of positive life-force. Birches is the pillar of strength for plants and reserve for animals. The Legend on The Birch of MickiewiczThe poet, on the day he was bidding farewell to his beloved Maryla, he sew a seed of young birch alongside the lake Świteź. After many many years, at some point of a stormy night, al-ready past Mickiewicz had died, a thunderbolt shattered the longstanding tree. Girls from neighboring villages believe, that the birch is still alive, and the one woman, who finds it, will be granted happiness and will give birth to a son – a great poet. During the “Ivan Ku-

pala Night”, in place of a fern flower, ladies are to quest ”the birch of Mickiewicz”.

itisfoodforbullfinch, redpoll, blackgrouseorheathercock, and its green chits in turn is food for elks and ha-res. Bees collect birch resin sap and produce propolis. Birch environs is time and again a kind of shelter to po-orly and wounded animals, where they instinctively stroke the trees or lay down close to. Birch is today the same everyday Polish scenery as storks or willow tre-es. It has been planted in the neighbourhood of house-holds, in the vicinity of roadside shrines and crosses, along routs, round communal parks and gardens. One of favourite themes, performed among artists, is birch. The very word ‘birch’ has its stem from Slavonic languages, and has been customised in Poland sin-ce XIV century. The original pronunciation was ‘be-rza’, which stands for ‘white’, ‘black and white’.

– A stately silver birch (Betula pendula), one to be direc-tly learnt in Poland, has its home in Gdańsk-Oliwa. It is 180 years standing, 26 meters high, and 320 centimeters wide. Famous cross-grained wood was delivered from primeval birches, from ones that had trunks developed into charac-teristic irregular rings.Down on the birches, there often mistletoe semi-parasites spread, or some fungi, which form clusters of tiny sprigs called “black broom”.Birch appears to be perfectly resistant to air pollution, so many of contaminated lands of industrial basins were sub-jected to birch forestation. Accordingly to the Celtic horoscope, birch is the patron of those, who were born on 24th of June, during the equinox. A birch-sign person is intelligent, composed and longani-mous. The famous individuals are: Jan Matejko, Ernest He-mingway, Jan Gutenberg.

Anna Worowska “The Birch”„‚“The Birch” is a scientifically resourceful, just as

artily imaginative “tree monograph”.Portraits of lonely birches and panoramas of birch families meet in one story of the deep relationship, that bonds nature and culture, ages of the past and every single moment of our day to day life. The au-thor made a selective use of her photos, and in ge-neral all her plenteous observations, collected du-ring her trekking after trekking, on the fields andmeadows, in groves, woods and primeval forests, through swamps and sands, along roads and ro-ugh routes, all around Białostoczyzna clime. Thepictures and images, at times documentary, yet more often arousing impressions, even those ro-mantic, show birch in its multiple faces and charac-ters, which it performs in favor of our landscape.

Anna Worowska was born and resides in Biały-stok. She is a biologist andworks at the Univer-sity ofMedicine in Białystok. Her leisure pursuitis photographing natural sceneries and full of hi-story architecture, mainly of northeastern Poland. The photos of hers were published in subject al-bums, books, magazines and displayed both in in-dividual exhibitions and collective ones. The hob-by upshots were rewarded prizes and distinctions in more than a few photographic competitions.

Herewith, it is our pleasure to introduce You with “The

Birch” - the illustrated book of Anna Worowska authorship. The greater satisfaction to do so is the fact, that we have been working as a team for long time up to now. On the pages of our magazine, ad-dressed to you diabetes, she educa-ted us in many various a way, not only with her texts, but also con-tributing it with rich photogra-phs. Expressing our gratitude to-wards Anna, for how orderly she enabled our Readers “the insight from our magazine window” out into this multifarious, amazing and abundant world of nature, we do recommend “The Birch”.

The climatologist prof. Zbigniew Kundze-wicz, from the Institute of Climate Changes’ Consequences Research, is being interviewed by Adam Kompowski.

Let us imagine the future, it is the year 2058. Your great-granddaughter, suppose her name is Basia, should be 20 years old. She is rather bo-und to feel warmer.

I would predict the global warming higher 1degree up, however in Poland I think it sho-uld worsen still further, for the fact the north is seen coming more warm than average. My gre-at-granddaughter is much not likely to be free to ski in winter. Snow in Poland, on the whole, is quite certain to be rarity, and white Christmas pretty pipe-dream.

Hence, it seems as if the end ski forays there to Tatra mountains?Itwillbeinevitablydifficult, particularlyatthelowerstratums, forinstanceatGubałówka.

What else is going to change? There is more precipitations foreseen, rainfall

rather than snow, more at wintertime time and less in July.Umbrellawinters?. Correct. Summer will turn into dry and ba-

king season, if there happens some rainwater it will be forceful. The urban sewage system will unavoidably run beyond expected control, for the excess of water. The city grounds are all covered with concrete, streets, pavements, car parks, and water can not be absorbed anyhow. I just hope, Basia is to opt a home far enough from towns or cities.

A small house with a garden and its sheared lawn?

Most probably, there will be no home turfs and grass in general. Droughts are a serious threat. Just this year grass went hay-like.Then, Basia is supposed to nurture her garden with dry-orien-tated plants. Not that really to be copying Ari-zona, where some professor proudly demon-strated his engagement: he made people awa-re how beneficial and beautiful cactuses are, nevertheless being still conscious of the rule to grow what naturally grows within a given cli-mate.

We will plant melons and harvest, peaches instead

In such an ungenerous garden, there is scant to do indeed. What is your great-granddaughter me-ant to be cultivate?Maybe, polishfieldflowers, red

popper or bluebottle. Ideal to sug-gest is dwarf everlast. Or holly-hocks– toughasoldboots,exci-ting and easy with parchedness. Or alternatively, she might orga-nize a winery. There is already a vineyard nearby Swarzędz closetoPoznań.

In a next dozen of years, the temperature will match up tho-se of Mediterranean. Peaches and apricots will mature on our lands on a regular basis. The time Ba-sia is a grown-up, these fruit tre-es should be fairly popular. Our

gardens are belie- ved to be full of watermelons, melons, and au-bergines. By the time our century has finished, theclimateofPolandcanbecalled a weather counterpart of Hun-gary. Along, our landscape will chan-ge the face. It is already changing. The common snowdrops and grape hyacin-ths beside my doorstep blossom in Fe-bruary, but what I can recollect from mychildhoodmemory, theyflourishedonly in March or April.

And the house of Basia? What is it to be like?

One well-insulated, one that gene-rates coolness during summer. As the prospect is, that it will be not the same necessary to heat our rooms and other domestic spaces, the contrary is what we anticipate extremely unbeara-

ble swelters to come, far more frequ-ent than today’s..

And the roofs solar batteried? Or a miniature windmill?WUnavoidablythesolarpanels, the

windmills remain a question. The so-lar cells are to be advanced on for-wards.Iamdissatisfiedofhowslowthe progress of solar batteries is. Even now, they stand too expensive prices and are too less effective they should be.

I am positive, that our buildings and homes will be spread with energy-sa-ving devices andwater-efficient ap-pliances. For example, the heat pomp, the piece of equipment, that is desi-gned to make use of temperature di-sparities between deep underground air and the air on the surface. It may be employed for home or water he-ating.

In upcoming 50 years water will be incredibly costly.

In Japan, it is widespread practice, that water that had been used for wa-shing hands goes to be re-used for splashing toilet. I assume, that Ba-sia will fortunately own such an ap-paratus. To point it a grave sin, that weflushWCsoutwithdear, purified, ready to be consumed water. In Isra-el alike, it is common to utilize “grey water”–namelybrackish, butgoodenough for cleansing libraries or irri-gatingfields.

To say, it is the water past baths, wa-shing and cleaning, or laundry?TRi-ght. I presume, Basia will be eager to be that economical. Great hope, she will be also collecting rain water, from specially intended containers.

Do you think Basia will be driving? These days, transport means emit one fourth of greenhouse gases.

In all probability, she will be tra-velling and moving around by non-internal-combustion engine vehicles, with conviction she may be riding a

bicycle, of course super skateboards or scooters might come into play, and anyway without any doubt the today engines will be converted into hydro-gen-power fed, electrical ones as well as solar ones. I am sure, the commu-nal communication will be highly developed.

If, the main focus will lay on reduc-tion of the carbon dioxide emissions alone, then all the previous and pre-sent estimations will turn erroneous. Whatisunprofitablenowmaybemo-ney-making and rewarding tomor-row. In addition, I find commuting re-

latively uncalled for. I wish telewor-king, to name it on-line work, beca-me one of unexceptional system ro-utines. I could have been in China now and we would be able to carry out our dialogue being in remote di-stance from each other. Perhaps, Ba-siawillbedoingherqualifiedjobathome, having to take her trips away only once a week.

.And suppose Basia chooses to spend her vacations at the seaside of the Baltic? What can we expect of the sea to be?

Do prefer good news or the bad in-formationfirst?

The good one please. In forthcoming 50 years the Baltic Sea will definitely become warmer,at an average 2 degrees. At summer time sea water will be standard 20 de-grees.

And the bad news is?ŚLiquid wastes streaming down

by way of rivers, fertilisers drained down from fields, all generate bre-eding of algae. Nonetheless, we are able to answer this problem. There are numbers of sewage treatment plants being erected. I trust, that until my great grand-daughter reaches her le-gal age, the crisis of river contamina-

tion will be managed, just as well as in the West.

Then again, even there, the pro-blem is not entirely handled, there is still reminders of fertilizers and vestigesofpesticides, roundfields, running down to bigger water re-servoirs. An option is to sow trees alongside the streams and rivers, which would stand natural sludge-works out of the tree roots.

Coming to an end of bad news: our scenic beaches, bottomland seasho-

res will go partially underwater. The Baltic surface level is obviously bound to get higher, for warmer li-quid expands by law. There is an-ticipatedextraflowsofwater fromthe huge glaciers, melting in Arctic Zone and Greenland. The Hel pe-ninsula may turn into an island.

Are we to be running away befo-re sharks?

Not before these mammals, they are not predisposed to cold. Yet, the ticks we associate with holiday time, should welcome the warming up of atmosphere. That is the re-ason, they are growing in number

in Poland. They are longer on the go and full of zip, so borreliosis and me-ningitis brought about by ticks will be more and more frequent.Notwithstanding, thefirstsuffering

to come is surges of air heat. A suc-cession of 40°C day after day, even if it’s three or four, is hard to endure, especially for the elderly, what we al-ready experienced in 2003 and 2006.

Are mushrooms to crop up there in forests?

Not yearly. Even when it was wet in 1997,thetimeofthegreatfloodofourlands, since the beginning of August it was dry, because the mass of water had not gone down, but evaporated, and the new fresh rainfall has not yet come. And there was scant of mush-rooms. I am afraid, these adverse eco-logical conditions are to gain in for-ce. Summer showers will be violent, and soil will not be able to arrest the downpours. In the present day it is said, that the best time for king bole-tes gatherings is 10-12 of September. Suchafixeddateforfeastingmush-rooms will be soon a past, it is abo-ut to be random occasions. The today methods will not be enough to fore-tell weather.

What kind of forest Basia is likely to be taking off to?

Coniferous wildwoods will be co-nverted into mixed woods. Fore-sters, long before now, have been at-tempting to do so, since mixed wo-odlands store water more and better. In half of the century it will ensue a vital problem. For the fact, there are less and less swamps and morasses. What will take place instead is rivers, but periodical ones, labelled also se-asonal ones. The waters of which is strictly dependent on rain falls.

What is the situation in Africa?Well, such rivers, for instance in RPA look like sand roads, by andlarge hedged with eucalyptuses. As

a matter of fact, in the course of the drought in Poland in 1992, some of the smaller rivers and plentiful ponds ran dry totally. I am indeed troubled with the perspective, that the lot of lakes will considerably decline, so swimming opportunities get narrow. And we can do nothing about it.And the V formations of flying

birds, will they die out the time Ba-sia could see the sky? Is there a chan-ce, the birds would not fancy taking their wings towards south anymo-re? The recent trends is thataway. The arrivals of birds are earlier than be-fore, and their leavings belated. Let alone the fact, that some of them are not anymore to journey for warmer lands. Swans, common crave or com-mon blackbird already today have fo-und their winter home in here.

How can we describe what Basia is likely to be eating?

Experts say, that drought will take itstoilchieflyonpotatoes.Asaresult,thepriceswillgoup.Extrafields’irri-gation works are assumed right now.

Consequently, food prices will be going still dearer?

Not necessarily. In case of sweet corn, we can meet the problem and sow it all over the country. In spite of everything, she will also be buy-ing groceries from abroad. Due to the global climate changes, there is pre-sumedvastnessofnewfarmingfieldsin theworld to arise. In Russia andCanada, theyareconfident tobeca-pabletospreadouttheirfieldsfurtherup north, what has been unachieva-ble so far. These nations will be the leaders in cereal exportation.Except, there will be regions infertile, whe-re from people will be massively emi-grating to Europe.

Yes indeed, and therefore Basia mi-ght have her neighbours who of black skin. Admittedly, the easiest way to reach Italy or Spain from Africa is ra-

fting or pontoon crossing, although Eu-ropeanUnionstancewillbeseparatingémigré and taking collective respon-sibility how to handle the foreigners’ influx. As for the rest, theAfricansorAfrikanersshouldbeallfineasforourweather conditionsTheEUauthoritiesappealtoustolet

go countless of things in aid of environ-mental protection. Is it all worth it?

Of course, in the true sense of the word, it will pay off eventually. Maybe apartfromus, butdefinitelyitwillpayback to our children and children of theirs. It has been born out by the lord Nicolas Stern, a British economist, in his latest rapport. The panel of experts he supervised had calculated it, that if we do not take any measures against climate changes, we may expect 5% of yearly fall in gross world product. On the contrary, actions of environment protection taken in time lead to only 1% of GWP a year.

Will we be capable of living harmony with nature in the 50 years coming up?

Without fail, because the lifestyle Americansinfluencedtheworldisoneabsurd. For instance, they need the-ircushy22°Croundhomeoroffices.Ifit gets warmer, they chill it down in its place. If again it is a minute colder, they heat their spaces anew. It is unaccepta-ble! It is a ghastly waste of energy.

The sceptical reply, it is not humans behind the global warming. On the other hand, I am familiar of studies on glaciers, which prove concentrations of carbon dioxide in scales known ne-ver before. Accordingly, these gas emis-sions must be the ground of the rapid climate changes. I strongly affirmmyopinion, that there should be no more scepticism about it until the Basia time comes.

Garlic is our hope Presumably only some people

know it, that the motherland of garlic is in the steppes of Central Asia. Only there from, it had reached Egypt 5000 years ago, and then to Greece and Rome.ItwassacrificedtotheGodsasspiritual call, and in secular life was highly appreciated both in medici-ne and in cuisine. Pythagoras named garlic the king of all seasonings.

It is common knowledge that it re-duces blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels. It is full of not only ethe-real oils, but also of vitamins B1 and C, proteins, carbohydrates, sulphur compounds and bacteriocidal bodies.

Vanadium or other active ingre-dients, in abundance enclosed in gar-lic, when orally administered to ani-mals, these substances took exac-tly the same as traditional diabetes drugs(equallyasinsulin).Theanimaltests’ results prove the alternative ef-fective for diabetes type 1 and 2 alike.

Notwithstanding, the dynamic ad-vancement of medicine and pharma-cology – today in theXXI century –we still do not command an actual method of treating the metabolic di-sorders, therein the most widespre-ad diseases, namely civilisation syn-dromes.

The Japanese scientists, from Ky-otoPharmaceuticalUniversity,KyotoMedicalCenterandSuzukaUniversi-ty of Medical Science, supervised by prof. Hiromu Sakurai they discove-red, that the garlic complexes of vana-dium and alixin comply with the the-rapeutic characteristics to the extent thatmightturnoutasafirstoraldrugin aid of diabetes type 1 and 2.

In the both cases of diabetes, oral ap-plication of alixin and vanadium lowe-red glucose levels in blood .

Experiments provide evidence to the fact, that the presence of the reagents prompts glucose metabolism cascades in the tissues of diabetes subjects, and what accompanies it is activation of en-zymes, which smooth the progress of glucose absorption in the tissues.

Accordingly to the scientists, the com-pounds discovered stand very good chances to be made a remedy to relie-ve millions of people all over the world, hence their current attempts to launch definiteclinicaltests.

aggravates the risk of males’ diabetesStress

P Susceptibility to stress, which can ma-nifest itself in depression, anxiety states or sleeplessness, heightens the probabi-lity of diabetes incidence in case of ma-les, not females, the Swedish magazine “Diabetic Medicine” reports. The scienti-sts from the Karolinska Institutet exami-ned 2.127 men and 3.100 women, who were born in 1938-1957. The individuals, who at the beginning proved regular blo-od glucose concentrations were expo-sed to psychic stress assessment. The area of interest was the degree of liabi-lity to anxiety, depression, apathy, sle-ep disorders and sensitivity of fatigue. It passed 8-10 years, when the researchers tested the subjects, whether they acqu-ired diabetes or not. It turned out, that males who suffered stress most intense-ly were twice as much more vulnerable, than males who were least strained then. The fact was not related to the other risk factors, such as age, body mass indicator, family background, smoking, physical ac-

tivity or social and economical status. The investigators did not confirmed the correlation as far as females concerned. The authors of the study expla-in, that the distinct reactions to stress arise from the fact, that femi-nine and masculine brain structu-res govern hormones their own ways.Depression may differently affect one-’s conduct depending on the gender. It may prompt her to undertake a pro-per diet or not, alike he may be more likely to perform physical exercises or not. It is common knowledge, that se-xes stand their unique strategies. “ Wo-men are more willing to own up to ne-rvous tension they experience, where-as men are more reluctant to be do-ing so, and recourse to overusing alco-hol, drugs or any other unhealthy ende-avours” prof. Anders Ekbom clarifies.

Every single disease generates some kind of smell.

Breath is one of representationshow well or bad one’s healthconditionis.

The olfactory sensation is produced via all the body tissues and released both down through skin perforation or oral cavity channel. In the course of a disease human organisms tend to multiply substanc-es of body odor. For an example, people with diabe-tes air physical esthesis what vents with acetone, just like rotten apples. In turn, renal diseases aura is as closeaspropertyofdecayedfish, fullofaminesandnitric oxide.

How far an unhealthy organism may smell is well-known from ancient times. Already then, in the past Greece, Hippocrates of Cos, the one who was con-sidered the father of medicine, he recommended to probe one’s perspiration in aim of appropriate exam-

ination. However, the knowledge of the antiquated had been as if neglected to be unearthed in pres-ent days. Today, our contemporary scientists have accepted the learning and make any efforts possi-ble to identify chemical compositions patients exhale or secret.ThepioneerinthefieldwasanAmericanchem-ist, Linus Pauling, a laureate of the Nobel Prize. As soon as in the seventies of 20nd century, he accomplished toanalyze completematerialofhumanbreath.Usinggas chromatography apparatus, the device allowing for separating particular compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition, he ascertained the fact, that air

breathed out by humans com-prises 300 chemical compo-nents clinicians can employ to be able to diagnose patients. This chemical fabric is pro-duced on the strength of met-abolic processes and biolog-ically transferred to blood. Then, the bodily fluid trans-ports it up to the lungs and

there pulmonary alveolus, which is where the air ex-haled comes from. Now, it is the time when research-ers decided to attribute particular chemical structures tospecificdiseases, whatinscientifictermstakesformof bio markers.

Provided there was a potential to invent an extra-sensi-tive nose, one that would be able to detect all those sub-stances, it all would mean, that diagnosing diseas

es, most severe of them among, could be far more eas-ier and reliable, when to say achievable in minutes as never before.

The investigation in the theme are conducted in all over the world. Dr. Michelle Gallagher from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia is on the point of exploration of melanoma vapor secretions. This learned person, she extracted samples of gases, both emitted from above cancer derma and from health tis-sues, and matched them against. It did prove, that the cells contained different types of chemical frames.

There, another scientist, dr. Michael Philips from the MenssanaResearchinNewJersey, heelaboratedanewinstrumental to associate breath with heart-transplant condition. It is apt to give the indication, whether the graft is about to happen to be accepted or rejected. The bio markers, that have been sought, are also studied by

Polish scientists, who are supported by BAMOD pro-gramme, on behalf of Anton Amann project in Inns-bruck. The oeuvre is directed by prof. BogusławBuszewski, the head of the Environmental Chemistry and Bioanalysis Department of the Nicolaus Coperni-cusUniversityinToruń.Theprofessorjoinsinforceswith a team of microbiologists, oncologists, and gas-trologists, the manpower of whom is executed by prof. Hanna Dahm, the forewoman of the Microbiology Institute in theWarsawUniversity, whocollaborateswith prof. Marek Jackowski from Collegium Medicum oftheUniversityofWarsaw.Theendeavourisassistedby physicians and computer experts. The researchers try to recognise what cancer of lungs and respiratory system disorders are. Also, they do tests to explicate a method of double-quick identifying what given bac-teria stand for, for instance prostate and cervix cancer microorganisms’ emissions.

The very hindrance scientists face is the appositeness of precise pinpointing what specific chemical com-pounds typify. In order to be able to do this research-ers “capture” chemicals patients exhale or discharge and store it in specialistic devices, which is polymer coatedhumanhair-thinfibres that extract substanc-es sought for. Then, the chemical matter obtained is matched against to those produced by healthy indi-viduals.

However, there are incidences of diseases when it transpires to be more complicated than usual. In case of people who suffer lung cancer it necessitates inves-

tigating health of patients who smoke, those who do not, as well as those who gave up the habit. It is be-cause the air exuded by lung cancer stricken smok-ers comprises more chemical substances than air released by lung neoplasm diseased non-smokers. This in turn requires scientists to differentiate which chemicals develop from cigarette smoke and which ones evolve from the disease. The bio markers that have been ascertained by investigators so far are iso-prene, toluene, and isomers of xylene.

Presently, scientists are conducting tests to recog-nise Helicobacter pylori bacteria, ones that engender tumor of alimentary tract. Before, they had to collect samples for so called cultures, what was cultivation of bacteria, so as to be capable to isolate particular strains. They were to spend 90 hours on examina-tions alone, whereas the method of breath determin-ing comes to pass as immediately as 12-15 minutes. What they expect to achieve in near future is em-ploying the know-how in studies that concern other infections, such as sepsis or wounds that tend to re-fuse to heal.InlinewithBogusławBuszewskithemedicaltreat-

ments based on breath analysis are to be elaborated within a couple of years further on. None the less, the game is worth the candle, for timely prophylax-is and well-timed diagnosis is half-success when the very time is priceless.

For ages now it has been a common knowledge, that proper food proces-sing – cooking, frying, smoking, pic-kling, curing, baking, seasoning with herbs or any other spices – by far en-hances flavours, the way it looks like, and preserves, so it can last longer.ROurcivilizationdevelopsdoubtles-sly, and recent years evolved into un-

derstanding how to employ some of plants and other organisms to food in-dustry. The experts, who represent the business of condiments and addi-tivesstate,thataccordinglytotheoffi-cial nomenclature they manufacture le-gal food preservatives and food proces-sing aids. The trial-and-error experien-ce of our fathers has changed with the times, and today it is professional ana-lyses, biochemical tests, giving clear-cut information what a current value of food is, or technological suitability of ingredients and techniques used. All

in all, our health absolutely de-pends on it, whatever a diet we go, whether we are diabetes, or we need to treat blood hyperten-sion, arteriosclerosis, obesity, or just shape bodies out of a fancy. Many an old wives’ story, or so called innuendos and even stra-ight forward false interpretations

make the rounds in the theme, to say simply due to ignorance.Additives are thought to ful-fil given purposes, for instanceto preserve food as it should be up to its expiry date, so as to pre-vent us against toxins and po-isoning. Provided that the pro-ducers mind and follow the sa-fety guidelines, the end products of consumption must be secure.

Mendeleev did not have a hand in it

An ordinary shopper appro-aches the “E” label sign with a kind of distrust. In contrast, the symbol altogether with the fi-gures behind it, is the eviden-ce, that the chemical addition is being regularly screened by au-thorised bodies. Respectivelyto the international regulations, every single additive substan-ce is to be subjected to detailed, extensive examinations, before it lawfully enters the market. Te-sting and inspecting means also to be prepared well in advance to answer any presumptive ri-sks science might trigger. Natu-rally, we can not rule out a likeli-hood we are not in command of all needed statistics. Of course,

relevant instructions let us know what best-to-use conditions and acceptable maximum doses are, but an individu-al consumer may be unaware of the in-takes he or she does. Likewise, even the essential and advantageous micro-elements and vitamins, those dissolva-ble in fats, may turn toxic, if in excess. Also, the formal obligation is to label

the contents to public attention. The lio-n’s share of additives applied in food is made of plants and animals common-ly present in our menus for ages now.

Some examples: apples – pectin E440; lemons – citric acid E330; soya – leci-thins E322; alginate and carrageenan - from E400 to E407 – characterise strong biological activities, the raw material for this thickener and stabiliser pro-duction is carrageen moss (Irish ‘lit-tle rock’) and other seaweed; agar-agar – E406 – a gelatinous substance, the main component of which, galac-tose, is the most challenging sugar to be digested in human system. Agar-agar is generated out of kelps, espe-cially ones from the shores of Japan, as an extract of these sea flora agar-agar is a constituent of: gummy be-ars, jellies and jams; beeswax – E901; the gases: nitrogen E941, argon E938, helium E949, oxygen E948; the acids: acetic E260 generally to be found in pickles, lactic E270 basic for souring of mushrooms. Any vitamin is attri-buted the “E” label sign, that is vita-min C – E300, riboflavin, vitamin B2 – E101, tocopherol, vitamin E – E307, or carotenes – E160. Quite a number of additives are health promoting, to quote lycopene (E160d), the pig-ment of tomato, which is antagoni-stic to prostate cancer, or for another

instance lutein (E161b), which helps the retina to realize human eye vision. At present, additives have became ubi-quitous for being so technological-ly advantageous. Employing additi-ves in adept and reasonable way ena-bles reaching unbelievable future inte-rests, thanks to abridgement of manu-facturing process, increase of producti-vity, and cut down on manufacturing costs, all of which means lower shop-ping prices, experts convince. The-re are engineering gains furthermore. The additives allowed by law perform 20 organoleptic features, effecting ta-ste, structure, juiciness, as well as any other qualities of consumer end pro-ducts. One of the innovations based on additives and related new technolo-gies is so called convenient food; con-centrates, freeze-dried soups, potato-es, sauces, cakes, custards, etc. This is true to all intents and purposes. Adjusting desirable balance in food compositions, fashioning high or lo-w-energy diets, additives are nu-tritiously valuable and health ad-vancing. That is correct either. However, there are two sides to every story. Vastness of products are fuelled with sugar, which serves as a conse-rvantandflavourfactor.Thedairiesarefilledwithacidityregulatorsandthic-keners,suchasmodifiedstarch,cellu-lose derivates or soya lecithin and so forth, what in case of farm cheese, as-sorted salads and other protein groce-ries leaves them without their original savour, let alone the fact consumers are unconscious of all the contents they eat. It is hit or miss, whether gelling agents are made of algae or pork. Diabetes pe-ople attentively read trade labels, except that the producers give scant informa-tion shortened to sweeteners. What sort of? Noone knows. Apart from the simple knowledge sugar is also sweete-ner.Howbeneficial it could be to taggoods with diabetes suggestions, since

WThe profits and benefits re-spectively for manufacturers and customers surges ceaseless growth of additives’ industry, including seeking for brand new types. Nevertheless, some ha-zards are likely in basic terms. It might be pressurising to launch new preparations, that had not been precisely screened, or to apply technologies that had not been tested. Similarly, it might be tempting to challenge pro-portions or disregard health and safety duties, all in antici-pation of extra gainings. Within this business, we have to be very prudent, says Bogusława Ma-słowska, an owner of an addi-tives’ manufacture, where they generate powdery concentrates of natural spices, mixtures of the same kind, E number meat addi-

effective, but we can not translate everythingintofinancialreturns.Even so, why “E” has become un-contested and inescapable? One of the answers is the today way of life. At the beginning of XX century, 10% of world population inhabited cities, in 2050 the pro-portion of towners will be 70%. The modes of consumption will grow and change just as agglo-merations grow and change. A village person will be able to ra-ise a chicken or a goose, and then kill it and prepare it with spices from his own garden. Any lefto-vers he would place in the frid-ge or freezer. A far different si-tuation is in case of busy and hi-ghly stressed bureaucrats, ban-kers, book-keepers, business-men, lawyers, or bus drivers, all of whom have a brief lunch bre-ak. He or she can merely dash to a next-door fast-food bar to take potluck of a bland burger, ta-

ast beef or pork loin? There is none. The only solution is ready-ma-de or so called convenience food, and a few minutes in microwave is as much as necessary. Catch 22.It is worth an accent, that additi-ves are employed not only in food prefabricated or “instant” food. Media had already acquainted us how cold meat producers “im-prove the work load” and inject the cold cut with water and bin-ding it reagents. However, the qu-estion is market interests. Inde-ed, additives have undeniable ef-fect on quality of end products, and despite the ad declarations “preservatives free” industries are not prone to abandon the practice. On the condition that consu-mers are attracted to cheaper go-ods, they have to face lower quali-ty. Without doubt, ham of no che-mical additions is a great deal dearer, is bound to look hum-bler, and be poorer in quantity, but yet it is guaranteed to be co-okedinauthenticbonafidesmoke.The buzzword “free of preserva-tives” simply comes down to wa-ter limitation, and this is a natu-ral method to safeguard food to last. A prosy tryout is to compa-re “Granny’s Ham” pieces produ-ced by meat trade giants and tra-ditional commerce, and after a co-uple of days one is able to choose.Out of the ordinary is cold cut for cold cut name’s sake. If the billboards advertise cold meat for 5 zloty, it arouses misgi-vings what on earth it might be.Now, we have arrived at the con-flict of three positions: producer’shonesty, market demands and our understanding of food and the in-dustry. It is what our healthy living relies on. The symbol “E” has beco-me a false shortcut, since non-che-mical food bodies are among the

steless sausage, artificial in-stant soup or something no one knows what is what.

IsthereanyalternativeoraplanB?

PImportant as it is. The-re must be a way to prepare a dish, which will be smel-ling its own natural bouqu-et and giving additives-free zest. Certainly. Then aga-in, the critical point still is that we need time. An ave-rage metropolitan dweller spends half the time away from home and can not af-ford the saying “my home is my castle” anymore. It ta-kes effort to work, mind and pay attention to family, findsome space to relax and get sound sleep at night. So, whe-re is the 2 hours needed to ro-

synthetic ones. Truly natural bee wax is signed E901, vitamin C is E300, vi-tamin B is behind E101, and E160d hides biological lycopene, unsaturated hydrocarbon, chemically resembling natural rubber, which is a pigment we canfindinplantsandanimals,andfurthermoreisanantioxidant,protec-ting against heart attacks, neurological diseases, and above all against can-cer, or next to them we can mention E100, that stands for curcumin, an orga-nic chemical compound, red or orange color pigment we know as curry In-dian spice. Some education in the subject should be as practical as rewarding.By all means, what we eat at present might turn out to be harmful or explicite poisonous. Nevertheless, experts in the medicine field are atrest, since convinced we are to die anyway for this reason or another.

Strawberries and kiwi are meant to be peeled and cut into large frag-ments. Then, we shall place the fruit in a si-zeable vessel, blend it with yogurt, liquidi-sing all together. At next, the mousse should be moved to a container, which is suitable for an hour of freezing. The last step is to blend the cocktail anew and decorate it with mint.

Strawberries, naturally, must be washed, rinsed and drained. Some share of fruit we need to pulp or blend, and the other share go to be cut in quarters. In turn, we mash curd and yogurt, then mix all with fruit and longway-hollowed vanilla stick, place the lot in shells and smarten it up with mint.
