LAST 12 MINUTES: Cleveland’s defense was strong in the fourth quarter, finishing 5th in the NBA in opponent FG% in the final period (.422). The Cavs held their final

15 opponents of the season to an average of 21.5 points on .355 (100-282) shooting in the fourth quarter, including .265 (27-102) from beyond the arc. Their .355 opponent field goal percentage in the fourth quarter since March 18 through the end of the season was the best mark in the NBA.

PAINT CONTROL: The Cavs ranked 5th in the NBA in opp. points in the paint (38.9) in 2013-14 and allowed fewer than 45 paint points in 20 of the final 21 games.

STOP YOUR BREAKS: Cleveland also allowed the 7th-lowest fast break points per game at 12.1 in 2013-14.

IRON MAN: For the second season in a row, Tristan Thompson started in all 82 games for the Cavaliers. Thompson

has played in 206 consecutive regular season games dating back to Feb. 10, 2012. He also recorded a career-high 36 double-doubles in 2013-14, the most by a Cavs player since Drew Gooden in 2004-05 (37). He was tied for 5th in the Eastern Conference (tied-13th in NBA) in double-doubles. In 2013-14, Thompson also ranked 7th in East in rebounds per game (9.2, 19th in NBA) and 3rd in East in offensive rebounds per game (3.3, 6th in NBA).

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS TEAM NOTES (CONTINUED)

NEON DION: Dion Waiters appeared in 70 games (24 starts) in 2013-14 and averaged 15.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 29.6 minutes per game. On the

season, Waiters had 24 games of at least 20 points, including a pair of 30-point performances (Dec. 6 at ATL & March 20 vs. OKC). Waiters put up strong numbers in the final 15 games of the season as a starter (21.2 points, 4.3 assists, career-high four straight 20-point games from 3/20-25) and scored at least 20 points in nine of those 15 games.

RECORD-SETTING NIGHT: In an 87-81 win over Orlando on Jan. 2, Anderson Varejao tied

the franchise’s single-game record with 25 rebounds (Rick Roberson on 3/4/72 at HOU). Varejao also had other numerous achievements during the course of the season:

Among East leaders in 2013-14, he ranked 4th in rebounds per game (9.7, 13th in NBA), 6th in offensive rebounds per game (2.9, 15th in NBA) and 6th in defensive rebounds per game (6.8, 15th in NBA).

In 21 contests from Dec. 26-Feb. 9, averaged 12.6 rebounds to go along with 10.0 points, 3.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.4 minutes over that stretch.

Against Dallas on Feb. 3, Anderson Varejao tallied 10 points and five rebounds to become just the 4th player in Cavs history to surpass 4,000 points and 4,000 rebounds for his career. He joins Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Brad Daugherty and John Williams as the only players in in the team’s record book to reach those marks.

In the 88-82 win against the Clippers on Dec. 7, Varejao grabbed 17 rebounds (five offensive) in 23 minutes off the bench. Less than three weeks later, he again grabbed 17 rebounds off the bench in the Dec. 26 contest against Atlanta. Prior to this season, Varejao was also the last Cavs bench player to have at least 17 rebounds in a single game when he grabbed 18 boards on January 11, 2008 against Charlotte.

Varejao recorded at least 10 rebounds 30 times in 2013-14, including two games of at least 20 rebounds.

CAVS BACKCOURT TAKES OVER N’AWLINS: Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters each had strong

performances during the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans. On Feb. 14, Waiters led Team Hill to a 142-136 win in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge after putting up a team-high 31 points on 10-14 (.714) shooting, including 4-6 (.667) from deep, a team-high seven assists and a team-high three steals in 22 minutes off the bench. Just two days later (Feb. 16), Irving made his start in the 2014 NBA All-Star Game and took home MVP honors after he tallied a team-high 31 points (15 in the 4th quarter) on 14-17 (.824) shooting, including 3-6 (.500) from long range, a game-high 14 assists and five rebounds in 34 minutes. After leading the East to a 163-155 win, he became the 2nd youngest player and 2nd Cavalier to win the award (LeBron James). In All-Star Game history, the only other player to record more than 10 field goals and 10 assists in a single game was Dwyane Wade in 2010 (12-16 shooting, 11 assists). Irving is the 1st player to have at least 31 points and 14 assists in the event. He had 24 points of his 31 points come in the second half, tying Glen Rice (1997) for most points scored in a in a single half in All-Star history.

DELLY FROM DEEP: All but three of Matthew Dellavedova’s 57 total three-pointers in 2013-14 had been in games

where he came off the bench. Among rookie bench players, only Tim Hardaway Jr. had more. See the box on the right for most triples made by rookie reserves last season. Dellavedova also recorded back-to-back double-doubles off the bench on March 20 vs. OKC (11 pts, 10 asts) and March 22 vs. HOU (14 pts, 10 asts). The last Cavs player to record consecutive point-assist double-doubles off the bench happened over 23 years ago (John Morton, 3/14/91-3/16/91). Against Detroit on April 9, Dellavedova came off the bench to distribute a career-high 12 assists and added 14 points, becoming just the 2nd Cavaliers rookie to come off the bench and hand out at least 12 assists in a game (Terrell Brandon, 13 assists on March 22, 1992 against Atlanta.

KYRIE-DICULOUS: Kyrie Irving owned the highest scoring average among Eastern Conference point guards at 20.8 points (2nd among all NBA PGs) and was one of only

six players in the NBA with averages of at least 20 points and six assists per game in 2013-14 (S. Curry, L. James, J. Harden, R. Westbrook & I. Thomas). Irving also scored at least 20 points in 38 contests in 2013-14, including 30 points or more 10 times and 40 points or more three times. Check out additional notes on the 2014 NBA All-Star Game MVP:

In 2013-14, Irving appeared in 71 games (all starts) with averages of 20.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 35.2 minutes per game. It was the second-straight season that Kyrie Irving averaged at least 20 points and five assists per game. He is only the 2nd Cavs player to every average those numbers in multiple seasons (L. James).

Irving scored a league-high 55 points in overtime this past season and his 7.9 overtime points per game were the 2nd-most in the NBA (minimum: 2 OT games). His 12 points in the second overtime on Dec. 26 versus Atlanta was one point shy of tying the most points scored in a single overtime in franchise history (LeBron James, 13 points in second OT on Jan. 24, 2007 vs. PHI).

Irving was also solid in the fourth quarter with an average of 6.1 points (8th in NBA).

In a 99-79 victory over the Utah Jazz on Feb. 28, Irving notched his first career triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists.

In the win over Milwaukee on Dec. 20, he had 39 points on 13-25 (.520) shooting, six assists and a career-high four blocks in 42 minutes. Since blocks became an official stat in 1973-74, Irving is the only Cavs guard to post 39 points and four blocks in a single game.

For just the 3rd time in Cavaliers history, a Cavs player tallied at least 40 points, nine assists and four steals in a single game when Irving put up those numbers against Atlanta on Dec. 26. The only other times that feat was accomplished in Cavaliers history were March, 5, 2008 (LeBron James, 50 points, 10 assists, four steals at NYK) and March 13, 1979 (Campy Russell, 41 points, nine assists, four steals vs. PHX).

Versus the Trail Blazers on Dec. 17, Irving put up his 4th double-double of 2013-14 with 25 points, 10 assists and zero turnovers, becoming the first Cavalier with those totals since March 19, 2009 (L. James).

In the Dec. 10 win over the Knicks, he became the first Cavs player since World B. Free on March 29, 1986 (43 points, 11 assists, 0 turnovers) to tally at least 37 points and 11 assists, while having one or fewer turnovers in a single game. Before Irving, the last NBA player to accomplish that feat was Kobe Bryant on December 29, 2009 (44 points, 11 assists, one turnover versus Golden State).

In a 127-125 double-overtime win over Philadelphia on Nov. 9, he became the 3rd Cavs player to ever tally 39 points, five rebounds and 12 assists in a single game (LeBron James and Mark Price).

Varejao’s 25 Rebounds vs. ORL on 1/2/14 *Tied the franchise record for rebounds in a single game (Rick Roberson, 3/4/72 at HOU)

*Set a new Quicken Loans Arena record for rebounds in a single game (Prev. 23 rebounds, by Varejao on 10/30/12 vs. WAS and by New Jersey’s Kris Humphries on 3/23/11).

*Tied the franchise record for rebounds in a single half with 16 boards in the 2nd half (Prev. Elmore Smith on 2/2/78 vs. WAS and Zydrunas Ilgauskas on 1/2/98 at UTA)

*Set the Quicken Loans Arena record for rebounds in a single half with his 16 boards in the 2

NBA D-LEAGUE AFFILIATE - CANTON CHARGE

CANTON CHARGE UPDATE: The Canton Charge, the NBA Development League team owned and operated by the Cleveland Cavaliers, had its third straight playoff season in

2013-14. The Charge were eliminated from the NBA Development League playoff quarterfinal round against Sioux Falls Skyforce, 2-1. The playoff exit came after Canton’s 28-22 regular season mark, the second-best in franchise history. Canton’s new head coach, Jordi Fernandez, will lead the Charge, who led the D-League in field goal percentage (.479) and opponent points per game (101.5) last season. The 2014-15 season tips off on Saturday, November 15 when the Charge hosts the Delaware 76ers at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. But before the season starts, the Charge will take part in the 2014 NBA Development League Draft on November 1st. For more news on the Canton Charge, head to CantonCharge.com.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS OFF THE COURT NOTES THE CAVALIERS ON RADIO: Cleveland Cavaliers fans will be able to follow the club all season

long on the 50,000-watt flagship station News Radio WTAM 1100 and the Cavs Radio Network. Each broadcast begins 30 minutes prior to game time with the “First Merit Tip-Off Show,” hosted by Mike Snyder. Calling the game action will be John Michael and Cavalier Legend Jim Chones. Then following each game, fans can participate in the “Postgame Call-In Show,” featuring comments from players in both locker rooms, Coach Blatt’s postgame press conference, and live reports and highlights from other games around the league. Fans can also hear the “Discount Drug Mart Cavaliers Insider Radio Show,” every week during the season. The next show is Monday, October 27th at 7:00 pm on the Cavs Radio Network. Also, weekday mornings, Cavs personalities will be on News Radio WTAM 1100 with host Bill Wills and Mike Snyder to update Cavalier fans with the latest on the team and the NBA in general.

CAVS TRADE IN BASKETBALLS FOR BOWLING BALLS IN COLUMBUS: On Sunday, October 19th, several members of the Cleveland Cavaliers traded in their

basketball shoes for bowling shoes and moved from the basketball court to the bowling lane. Cavs players, assistant coaches and support staff hosted 40 Special Olympics athletes at Sawmill Lanes in Columbus. Cavaliers players Matthew Dellavedova, Shane Edwards, Joe Harris, Shawn Marion and AJ Price, as well as Cavaliers assistant coaches and support staff were on hand to practice with the Special Olympics athletes as they prepared for the State Team Bowling Tournament, which will be held later this month in Columbus (October 25-26). Sunday’s bowling was a “warm-up” for the Cavs before they face the Chicago Bulls in preseason NBA action on Monday at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University. The Special Olympics athletes will also be the Cavs’ guests at Monday’s game.

CAVALIERS AND PACERS FIGHT HUNGER IN CINCINNATI BEFORE PRESEASON GAME: Before their two teams faced off in preseason action Wednesday

night (Oct. 15), volunteers from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers teamed up with Feed the Children to help hundreds of local Cincinnati families. Representatives from the Cavs and Pacers organizations, as well as local members of the U.S. military, were on hand at Feed the Children’s partner agency, Freestore Foodbank (Customer Connection Center), Wednesday afternoon to hand out food and hygiene products to 400 families in need pre-selected by Feed the Children. Each family received a 25-pound box of food and a 10-pound box of basic essentials. Cleveland radio duo John Michael and Jim Chones, as well as television sideline reporter Allie Clifton, were on-site to lend a helping hand. They were joined by Indiana’s television broadcast team: analyst Quinn Buckner, play-by-play announcer Chris Denari and sideline reporter Jeremiah Johnson. The families in attendance were also entertained by Cavs mascot Sir C.C. and Pacers mascot Boomer. As part of the NBA’s “Hoops for Troops” program, the military volunteers were guests of the teams at the game Wednesday night, held at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University.

CAVALIERS PLAYERS WALK THE RUNWAY: The stars came out on Thursday, October 2 – Frank, Dean, Sammy, and even Marilyn took the stage at Quicken Loans Arena.

But it was the “Little Stars” who really stole the show. The Q transformed into the Sands Casino in Las Vegas, circa 1964, as the Cleveland Cavaliers hosted the annual “Big Shots and Little Stars” fundraiser. The event benefits Flashes of Hope and The Children’s Tumor Foundation and featured Cleveland-area “Big Shots” and the true “Little Stars” of the evening – pediatric cancer patients and survivors. The Vegas party-goers were treated to posh accommodations, as well as toe-tapping performances of old favorites such as “Luck be a Lady” and “New York, New York.” There were even Vegas showgirls adorning the stage. And what Sin City shindig would be complete without some opulent food and cocktails. The pinnacle of the night was the eye-catching and heart-warming fashion show, featuring the “Big Shots” accompanying their “Little Stars” down the runway. Among the many “Big Shots” were Cavaliers Majority Owner Dan Gilbert and Vice Chairmen Jeff Cohen and Nate Forbes, the full Cavs team, Lake Erie Monsters players Sami Aittokallio and Paul Carey, and Cleveland Gladiators Dominic Jones and Chad Schofield; plus several prominent Cleveland business leaders.

FRANCHISE’S PAST AND PRESENT CONVERGE IN AKRON FOR A WORTHY CAUSE: Fall was in the air on September 22nd as more than 300 golfers teed off

at the renowned Firestone Country Club in Akron for the 29th Annual Cavaliers Youth Fund Golf Classic, presented by Cleveland Clinic, Jani-King and PwC Cleveland. The signature yearly event brought together the Cavs’ past – with the likes of former general manager, Wayne Embry, and former players Terrell Brandon and Larry Nance – and the franchise’s present and future – with new head coach, David Blatt, general manager David Griffin and players like Kevin Love and Mike Miller. The Golf Classic is the largest fundraiser each year for the Cavaliers Youth Fund (CYF), a fund of the Cleveland Foundation. CYF distributes the net proceeds from the event to Cleveland-area organizations supporting children, families and young adults in the areas of education, health, recreation, employment, entrepreneurship and life skills. Since its inception in 1993, CYF has distributed grants totaling more than $22 million to deserving organizations benefiting Northeast Ohio. Hitting the links for charity were current Cavs players Matthew Dellavedova, Joe Harris, Alex Kirk, Mike Miller and Dwight Powell. They were joined by many members of the team’s front office and coaching staff. Plus Legends Jim Chones, Zydrunas Ilgauskus, and Campy Russell took part along with dozens of other former Cavs players, such as Wally Szczerbiak, Earl Boykins and Trajan Langdon. Blatt and Griffin, along with players Kevin Love and James Jones, were also out on the greens during the event. Newly-named Canton Charge head coach, Jordi Fernandez, hit the greens, as did Cleveland Gladiators Head Coach Steve Thonn and his players, Chris Dieker, Dominic Jones, Joe Phinisee and Collin Taylor. After a full day on the fairway, golfers were treated to a reception with Northeast Ohio flair. Local food trucks The Green Machine, The Mash Box, Swensons, Zydeco Bistro, Mason’s Creamery and Donut Lab provided fun and food. Guests also enjoyed Outback Steakhouse while out on the course during the day. Another popular feature of the annual Golf Classic – held for the fourth straight year at Firestone – is the silent auction, which gives guests the chance to bid on sports memorabilia and unique experiences and items, and raises additional funds for CYF to distribute.
