Reactions 1340 - 26 Feb 2011 O S Carbamazepine overdose Coma: case report A 15-year-old girl was admitted approximately 4 hours after ingesting an intentional overdose of carbamazepine extended-release 200mg tablets [amount ingested unknown]. The tablets had been prescribed to a family member for epilepsy. Examination revealed loss of consciousness, mydriasis and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 5. Her BP, RR and oxygen saturation were 110/65mm Hg, 30 breaths/min and 93%, respectively. She was intubated and controlled ventilation was applied. A gastric lavage was performed and activated charcoal was administered. Her plasma carbamazepine level was 54.77 mg/L. Her neurological status subsequently improved. Three days postadmission, her Glasgow Coma Scale score was 11 and she was extubated. She remained in hospital for 6 days, and was subsequently referred to the paediatric psychiatry consultation service. Koraichi AE, et al.
