Reactions 442 - 13 Mar 1993 Carbamazepine Renal failure: case report Acute renal failure developed in a 38-year-old man who had been treated for 4 years with carbamazepine 400mg tid for epilepsy and oxazepam for anxiety. The patient was admitted after a period of unconsciousness His serum creatinine, potassium, sodium, AST, ALT, lactic dehydrogenase and creatine kinase levels were raised. The man’s acidosis was treated with sodium bicarbonate and his hyperkalaemia with sodium polystyrene sulfonate. Carbamazepine was discontinued and replaced with phenytoin The patient’s serum creatinine levels, which reached a maximum of 1017 micromol/L, normalised to 91 micromol/L over 3 weeks, at which time the patient was discharged Hegbrant J, et al.
