Carbamazepine
Renal failure: case reportAcute renal failure developed in a 38-year-old man who had
been treated for 4 years with carbamazepine 400mg tid forepilepsy and oxazepam for anxiety. The patient was admittedafter a period of unconsciousness His serum creatinine,potassium, sodium, AST, ALT, lactic dehydrogenase andcreatine kinase levels were raised. The man’s acidosis wastreated with sodium bicarbonate and his hyperkalaemia withsodium polystyrene sulfonate. Carbamazepine wasdiscontinued and replaced with phenytoin The patient’s serumcreatinine levels, which reached a maximum of 1017micromol/L, normalised to 91 micromol/L over 3 weeks, atwhich time the patient was dischargedHegbrant J, et al.
