Reactions 404 - 6 Jun 1992 Carbamazepine Thrombocytopenia in a child: case report Severe thrombocytopenia occurred twice following the administration of carbamazepine in an 8-year-old girl with cerebral palsy Thrombocytopenia was first detected 2 weeks after the introduction of carbamazepine 14 mg/kg/day for a tonic clonic seizure which had occurred while the girl was receiving diazepam. Carbamazepine was discontinued and platelet counts normalised over 1 week. Reintroduction of carbamazepine 3 days later was followed by a recurrence of thrombocytopenia. Again platelet counts recovered after carbamazepine withdrawal; phenytoin 7 mg/kg/day was initiated for seizure control Casasin T, et al. Two episodes of carbamazepine-induced severe thrombocytopenia in the same child.
